I liked Top Gun but I'm surprised it's even nominated. Watching the planes fly was cool but the script and cast was just an excuse to show the planes flying. I can't even remember the call signs of the other pilots which the original at least got you invested in a couple of the characters. Nothing wrong with a good popcorn movie but if it's best picture then it was a really bad year for movies.

Same reason Avatar was nominated. A number of years back they made the decision to start nominating more "blockbuster" films seen by a wide audience to the best picture category...mostly as a tactic to try to draw viewers to the show, since numbers had been declining for years.

finally got around to watching Elvis and it wasn't that bad, although Tom Hanks was probably mis cast. assuming the story in the movie is true (big if) i never knew all that crazy stuff about their life
especially sad given Lisa Marie dying recently
