The caveat is (again) that this is the most concise (and probably the best) Westeros story Martin wrote, and they only have two more published stories to work with.

Hell, you could argue that even the material they added to this season doesn't particularly hold up. Egg exercising Thunder? Sure, that addition makes sense, but does Egg practicing being a squire make any sense, if the reason he was headed to the tourney was to serve as Daeron's squire? Maekar fighting through the combat to save Aerion does make sense, but why is he also not concerned about Daeron, his firstborn son and heir?

I'm not sure how I feel about the episode 6 additions. Dunc/Egg do come into conflict with Lyonel, but not until decades later, for actions Aegon does as king - Lyonel being somewhat against Egg from the start doesn't make any sense. And Egg not knowingly transferring to Dunc's service wouldn't necessarily change the narrative in the other published stories (presuming Egg kept his ring), but seems like it would add complications that would come up sooner than later.

Edit: I'm undecided about ghost Arlan at the end. Is this Furious 7? Where's Ser Paul Walker.

Wrong movie sir!

They definitely did the FF ending which was dumb because no one cares about ser Arlene of pennytree and the actor didn't even die. It was kind of a middle finger, making a joke at paul walker's goodbye scene.

Fits in with all the pissing and shitting and man meat scenes. The show runners are aiming for low brow irreverent comedy.

This was pretty good. The last scene with Pennytree riding with them felt more like a passing of the torch rather than a fond farewell. My main gripe with the show was how they portrayed the story. It would have been better to have just done a 1-6, rather than a 324516. I am tired of stories that go back in time when the story is about the life of a person as a progression. Just tell the story as it happened. Episode 5. which was the best episode, would have been even better if they had not interrupted the combat with a long memory that could have just been made into episode 1.

Still worth watching but I will most likely not watch it again until near season 2.

This 100%.

Its writers sniffing their own farts about being clever writers instead of just telling the fucking story.

Linear storytelling doesn’t always work. It really depends on the story being told and the character involved.

You need a reader/viewer invested in a character before they care about their backstory. If the backstory is strong enough to to grab the reader/viewer, then sure. Otherwise you need to present the character, get the reader/viewer invested, then you peel back layers of story as needed to provide backstory context. You can do a flashback or exposition, but because TV is a visual medium, showing is sometimes better than telling unless the story is better served by the telling.

For a recent example of telling is better, Picard season 3 when the captain is at the bar and telling his experience of Wolf 359. They don’t show it, although as he tells it you hear some sounds in the background like he is remembering the explosions and screams. But that works better because the focus is on the captain’s trauma and him blaming Picard for it as Locutus, so you’re focusing more on the emotion.

Hmm I read it more as Duncan was saying goodbye to his 'knight' and becoming his own man but you may be right. Good season anyhow.

I don't know the source material or anything other than the preview that was shown at the end of the last episode, but...

I think Egg's pops is going to have Dunk trained by whatever weapon master trained his kids. If Egg demands to squire for Dunk, I don't think papa targaryan is going to go for it unless Dunk agrees to do some training and not be such a shit knight.
I'd like to give myself a pat on the back for nailing this one....but also acknowledge that probably everyone except my wife saw that coming.

started and finished this today, really enjoyed it. I wish we would get longer seasons and/or longer episodes but as long as it maintains quality, it's fine I suppose.

My favorite line was “The caravan departs after the roast!” and then cuts to the princes' burning pyre. Got a good laugh from that.

I appreciate the story telling keeping Duncan pretty in character as a dumb person peasant boy.

The ending had me screaming like…just like that?!?!!?!?

Then I remembered he was dumb. And it clicked.

even the scene where he was suppose to be more mournful/grateful/understanding to the young noble and he ultimately has to painfully “tsk” the conversation ahead because he understand he is 50iq dum dum and doesn’t mean disrespect.

Binged it today, I liked it. Both nice production and acting. The "trial of seven" stuff felt somewhat off though :"lol I'm a vapid psychotic cunt but I know the innards of our religious law and I'll use it to my advantage" then proceeds to go 1v1 against a giant.

many people seem to be praising Dunk getting knocked out, or outright dying and being divinely resurrected as well. but, thats kind of stupid.. Dunk is supposed to be this giant badass. having him lose here in that 1v1 makes him look bad.

that doesn't happen in the books/comic. in those, they do 1v1. but dunk straight beats his ass, forcing him to surrender.

They were obviously going for the rocky balboa fight choreography where he gets beat within an inch of his life before hulking up and winning.

Dunk hulk smashing him right off the bat would of made for a very lackluster fight that would of taken away from all the build up of him trying to find a last fighter to help him. Even in the book he faced some adversity.

His "getting beat up" was mostly mounted "jousting" combat that he was completely and wholly unprepared for- be it mounted fighting in general or mounted jousting tourney rules. Then by the time he got to 1v1, he was already at like 5% HP and 1% STA - that was still enough to win. I think the show did a good job presenting it at in that aspect.

binged through, enjoyed it but i don't think its the 10/10 show everyone seems to say. Its light, short, enjoyable alt stories for the game of thrones universe which it sorely needs. sad in 2026 we get giant dongs a plenty but no titties. oh well, no titties to really look for in the season anyways, these are some ugly women. i did lul at the whore conning her way into a ladyship haha

six episodes is almost criminal but i guess thats all we get now, House of the dragon is out in like 4 months so thats not too bad i guess. This show would be a lot better with 2 more episodes, a lot of stuff felt a bit rushed but with only 2 seasons more (i imagine, based on short stories) maybe they will give it a full 8 episode run next season.

it'll be interesting reading about egg and who he becomes, obviously the episodes drop a lot of hints and i did read the book but don't really remember much from it. Dunk was just great casting, as was the crazy Baratheon guy and Arlen. the rest were all meh.
