Daybreak (posted without parenthetical notation) seriously made them change the name from EverCraft. So fucking insane man.

Boy oh boy is there a slider or two I wish I could bring down to 0.

it's a default field in unity now and it's more "Opt Out" through your own coding vs opt in.

There is no "field in unity" for gender/body type. You can set the text of a UI field to whatever you like.

Also, guys, you know full well why they did it and it has nothing to do with adding different types of tree character bodies in the future...

We are not a remake. Our philosophy is to to take the core tenets we rank most imported from classic MMO experiences and build a new game from that. It's an original work fitting our design sensibilities. We're excited to share the core mechanics we found engaging and believe they can be presented to respect moderns playstyles and new audiences.

Are your races based on the dimorphic species known as homo sapiens? Dimorphic means two forms, male and female. Why are you representing standard biology but not this very basic concept? can we start having three arms or multiple legs as well? everything must be represented you know

I appreciate the reply, but pivoting to Cyberpunk 2077 and genitalia selectors is a total red herring. I didn’t ask about visual assets; I asked about classification logic. Why is Race treated as a concrete biological category in Adrullan while Sex is reduced to an abstract "Body Type"? This is a glaring cognitive dissonance in your worldbuilding.

Of course, it is your MMORPG and you are free to design it however you see fit. But while you’ve stated this isn't a "remake," your project’s previous title EverCraft, was a direct nod to the EverQuest lineage, and your own website still promises a "return to the classic roots of the MMORPG genre."

Appealing to "modern playstyles" to justify this change is fallacious; you are courting a hypothetical new audience by uprooting the very biological archetypes and categories that the classic audience, the one your branding targets, actually values. If flexibility is truly the priority over consistency, then logically Race should also be a cosmetic abstraction. You cannot claim to honor the "roots" of the genre while removing the foundational categories that gave those classic worlds their weight and immersion.

If character sex is removed to pander to modern sensibilities, it leaves one to wonder what other core tenets of the classic experience will be dismantled next to satisfy an audience that doesn't even play these types of games.
You’re still forcing a contradiction that isn’t there.

In Adrullan the mechanically meaningful identity choices are Race and Class. Those are gameplay categories. They affect the kind of character you are in the world and how you play. The rest of character creation is visual presentation.

In classic MMOs, including EverQuest, sex/gender selection was not mechanically meaningful. It was presentation. So no, we did not remove some foundational gameplay pillar. We renamed a visual selector to Body Type because it better reflects what that choice is doing in our character creator and gives us more flexibility in presentation without constraining how players see their character.

You are still completely free to define and project your character however you want. Nothing about that has been taken away. Labeling a visual option “Body Type” does not somehow erase your ability to read your own character as male, female, or anything else. It simply means we are not pretending that a cosmetic selector is some deep mechanical axis when it never was.

And on the broader point: Adrullan is not a remake, and it was never meant to be one. That is exactly why the name changed from EverCraft. The old name created the kind of misconception you are demonstrating now: that we were trying to recreate EverQuest one-to-one, or that every legacy convention had to be preserved untouched. That was never the goal.

Our philosophy is to identify the core tenets of classic MMORPGs that actually mattered to the experience: meaningful class identity, world immersion, social interdependence, RPG progression, racial fantasy, danger, discovery, community - and build an original game around those strengths.

This is not about “pandering to modern sensibilities.” It is about understanding the difference between mechanically important choices and visual customization flexibility, and building an original MMORPG accordingly.

I for one am incredibly excited that we finally are living in a time where projects are emerging that explore the entire spectrum of fidelity to this niche. We respect and stand on the shoulders of giants, but do not revere the old ways as immutable. We are on the side of innovating. We've seen the mistakes mainstream efforts have made towards mass appeal that erode the core, and we hope to navigate around them in a way that keeps the tenets we feel are important, but we will not be locked into an specific previous example. We have an advantage in our decisions are driven by what we think is fun and interesting and not shareholder value.

Am I allowed to murder children in this game?
Short answer, TBD. Therefore we've only introduced a couple representations of children in the game. Due to content restrictions in various regions / on various platforms, seems prudent to not make it intrinsic to the design. On the moral level, and what feels right for the tone, pedicide is quite heavy. Our system is Factions, which is intrinsic to the design, but falls short in presentation of the weight such actions should carry. There is defined lineage in Adrullan lore, so it stands to reason there are children, but the fidelity of the world, like EverQuest may excuse excluding representing them to avoid the quagmire. What we really want to avoid is having artificially barred entities in the world. We like things are grounded and follow the same rules, and that overrides our desire to explore such a heavy topic. That said, we also love juxtaposition and there is plenty of darker elements in Adrullan.

Where do you land on it? Execute Order 66?

Exactly. That Vah Shir example is memorable because it feels like a violation of EQ’s own unspoken rule. EQ generally implied children existed without putting them in the actual gamespace, which was smart. Once you put them in a grounded sandbox, either the world has to let the same rules apply, which gets dark fast, even with reduced fidelty, or you bolt on fake protections and break the logic. Luclin, not produced by the original team, poked a hole in that, and people remember it precisely because it was anachronous.

I personally think a game exploring the moral weight of Executing Order 66 or similar could be a worthwhile exploration, but I think you'd need to make it a core focus to address it in a way this genre is ill-equipped to do. That said, come play this April 1st as our test examples we use while navigating this very issue are in and Alia Tod awaits her beat down; at least for now.

Is this shade being thrown at MnM? Wasn't it Shawn who took finally became lead or something around Luclin?

I would sincerely doubt that because both teams are active in the others discords.

I actually was kinda mind blown that Atomicfrog is an active FFXIV modding discord.

lol. No. Our teams are friends, and some even guildies. We have incredible respect for the MnM team and are super happy that'll we'll have an EQ like to play too. Then there's that spectrum. Everyone has their own opinions on how the levers should be flipped, the more options the better. If you didn't know, Shawn was one of the first to play our game. Here's the MnM crew playing with us in 2021:

My point was, many of the people who thought deeply about the scaffolding and internal logic of the world to pass on the tribal knowledge of the design were gone by that time.

I figured they got along since they have reciprocal items in their games (at least, I think MnM does, I know Adrullan does). I mean, people call their best friend faggot. Just because they get along doesn't mean he can't get a good ribbing in. "Hey, your game went to shit when you took over, loser."
