TL;DR: Eve online does not give you the ability to harvest null sec ores in high sec for a reason, currently AA does, metaphorically of course. Don't forget that carebear safezone trade route people can still get gold for the routes to buy gilda star schematics and items off the AH. People who cry for things to be handed to them in games that boast sandbox content are absolutely doing it wrong. Lobbying for this interest will just prove to wreck the hell out of a game.

So you're arguing the difference between incentivized carebear farmville vs incentivized world pvp risk/reward I guess is how I take your closing statement there.

IDK about you, but it sounds kind of like a shitty argument, no offense.

The current meta is just Cows and Super Safe trade runs, world pvp is just a safe zone camp and banana dock jerkfest.

Gilda stars are basically McDonalds happy meal toys in the current risk/reward model.

I think making gilda stars more valuable because it's extra risky to get them is a very good thing.

I'd rather be forced to risk it for a biscuit for an hour than be forced to farmville it for 5 hours to stay competitive. Don't give me any "it's your choice" shit either here, there's no way the riskier methods of obtaining gilda stars are better than the safer methods at all. Risking your ass for something someone else doesn't have to risk theirs for makes for salty experiences. "Why the hell should I take my wares over-seas if some dumb guy will take them in half the time for half the price?"

There is literally no point in risking your wares in overseas travel currently. It's not a gold/hr or gilda/hr multiplier at all. The risk is definitely not worth it.

Like others have said, the carebears can just farmville it and then purchase most of the gilda-star items on the AH. Simple as that.

Maybe that's just me. This seems like a gigantic value add for world pvp.

You make a good argument, Eidal. I think this is just a question of risk vs reward. The big problem with a lot of games is that the risk vs reward metric is skewed to not reward risk at all. The game has to find the right balance of getting X% more reward for taking a route you can get killed on. Obviously a server with a heavy big pirate presence will have more risk.

The confusing part to me is why all of the pirates, gankers, griefers are doing the above instead of fighting each other in blood spatter kill fests or castles? Because the real point to world PvP is ganking carebears?

I understand the desire to "encourage" carebears to participate in world PvP but there is a delicate line to balance between encouraging them and discouraging them from playing at all. With Gilda stars coming from intercontinental trade routes it effectively means you either PvP for PvE progress or generate enough gold to buy plans to progress your PvE adventure from the auction house. World PVP should really be designed to encourage other PvPers to fight each other under the assumption that their will always be enough gankers who will go after carebears where ever they can.
d
Maybe this will work, I don't know and I guess we are going to find out. I think we can all agree that no matter how much you want a PvP centered MMO, carebears are the money that allows you to have any PvP at all. You don't have to cater the game entirely to them but a game without them is FTP -> RIP.

Most pvpers only engage in limited risk high reward activities. That is why stealh and sniper classes are so popular. There is always a built in excuse why someone loses in pvp. Outnumbered, better gear, coverage!, laaaaag. This game has the mechanics in place to actually help carebears if they stick with it. Anti-pk guilds will have a field day hunting down gankers and pirates and probably offer help for little timmy trying to turn in his trade pack across the sea. The main thing is are you willing to wait for the world and pecking order to develop. In a FTP game I think it's well worth the time to see what happens.

Let's be real here, it's not like the safe trade routes are going away, they're just not going to offer potentially one of the most important end game resources.

Assuming castle schematics for walls and towers will cost gilda stars later on etc.

There needs to be some kind of limiter on the risk for obtaining this resource, and making the limiter PLAYERS seems to be a decent idea. (IMO of course)

? This 100% ?

With this new change to gilda star aquisition, Tuco's merry band of server super heroes will have a name for themselves protecting valuable trade routes. In the current reward structure, this is completely meaningless because people can just ride a donkey a mile and get very good rewards.

The value for doing this is going to sky rocket with the gilda star change exponentially.

I'm hoping to see a more developed PvP game in the future because right now it's a see of red at the banana turn in. Not one or two gankers but 15-20 on dock and 1-3 ships including the battleship thing out in the harbor. All living the world PvP dream of ganking that fifth banana farmer. I mean hell if you complain about how boring it is to play farmville you might as well be killing lvl 1 rats for all of the risk you encounter fighting banana farmers or a small mercenary band of less then 10 people.

Where do you go and how do you find the 30+ Anti PvP merc guild you can hire to destroy this battleship? And please tell me it's not going to cost 50 gold or something just to complete the banana turn in? I'd log in at 3AM on a Thursday again which while annoying is liveable for a single run or two but for every intercontinental run?

Hopefully the developed world will have major trade runs with everyone grouping up at the same time but then so would the gankers and their are typically more of them... And there aren't any carebear protections during these trade runs so if you don't have more people then so sorry go home all carebears this game is for world PvPer's only.

I'd imagine some merc guilds popping up, I know mine will be one of them, where for a small percent on what you expect to receive for your merchant ship load, we'll protect it. For instance an ideal pricing model will be for Maximum value trade at 7g/crate, we take a 20% cut up front (28g value) (returned if shit goes bad) and will do free routes every few hours as marketing, trust and reputation posturing.

Could be a thing. If the value in trade-routes is there.

If it turns out to be anything like Conan then fuck that shit. What a cluster fuck that was, is "guildname" KOS!? spammed the chat/VOIP server constantly.

Anti-PK is where it's at. No one cries harder than a ganker and I just love the idea of merc guilds protecting trade routes.

The problem with the banana trade route is that everyone needs to do it, and everyone knows the destination.

When the game matures a bit, there won't be so many people doing the banana run so waiting at the dock for those people will stop being profitable.

All other trade routes have multiple destination so it will require people to try and cover more ports somewhat reducing what we are seeing now where lots of people wait at one place.

Seeing that both sides are full of farms and houses means a lot of people have succeeded in doing the runs on the first place.

It will be interesting to see how it works out.

That's my expectation of how it'll be, probably worse in fact. We'll probably have a spreadsheet and a rule against asking about someone being KOS in guild chat/ voip.

What they need is a system of contracts that rewards "protecters" with gilda stars equal to the number "protectees" that successfully turn in their intercontinental cargo. Going up exponentially by the farther inland they travel to turn in the stars. No reward on failure obviously. Anyone could sign up and pay the gold fee to be part of the run and a merc guild could list a run on a central board or something. Fee is non-returnable (guild doesn't get fee unless run is a success for at least one person) so guild reputation's would be based on those who successfully complete runs.

This could be handled entirely without Trion involvement except for the part about rewarding Gilda stars being the big motivator to encourage trade route protection. Obviously gankers still get to gank and sell of whatever they take.

You could do this right now for gold but who gives a shit about gold. You can just milk farm your way or whatever for gold. Gilda stars is the motivator.

One thing though, I am 46 with no farms, no donkeys, and haven't done the trade route quest at all yet. I did them on my first character on the west side and just wanted to test a different spec on the east side.

I still managed to level, I manage to craft my level 20, 24, 30, 34, and 40 armor set and weapon(staff) and bow...and still have around 200gold or so. Not having a farm doesn't prevent you from doing much, you just have to spend money to do it. The economy is fairly healthy to be honest right now.

Now I do want a farm, a house, a boat, etc...eventually. Heck right now tons of people selling some very nice plots in pretty good spots...I could buy that more easily than doing all the work.

This is what im aiming for too. Has always been fun playing games like this, like that.

Is the Banana route that bad? I been running friends on my speed boat a ton with the Narcs to east continent for the quest and i am yet to see anyone until we are well within the quest complete spot(my route is a little long but it seems effective). Is the banana quest complete spot that far in(i am only familiar with the west quest which you can complete well before land)? I can't imagine failing to speed in there unless you take an awful direct way. Unless this quest is unbalanced you should be completed long before anyone on shore can get to you.

But i wouldn't worry too much, no where to put that farm atm anyways.

Selix I don't think that's necessary. A typical protection run would have room to put some packs on the boats for yourself, so you basically take other people on your own runs and get them to pay you gold as an added bonus for a run you'd do anyway. It's not like making packs is terribly complicated in the first place, especially once the economy gets going and you can buy basic materials made instantly. The issue is travelling with them, so say you were a bodyguard guild, you'd just load up all your boats tradepack slots(there's specific slots in boats where you can put packs so you don't have to actually carry them during battle) then do the run, resulting in getting some gildas, some gold and a few bodies in case you do get attacked(while you move slow as shit with a pack, you can still fight, so people you escort can actually help at least a bit).

They might rebalance numbers on stuff too if they remove easy gildas. Or they could leave them to show true achievement/dedication rewards, like getting a manor would be pretty fucking big, when currently you could in theory get a manor by running a simple autohotkey script(not even anything complicated) over a decent period of time.

wat.jpg

Ganking carebears is what they currently do between the blood-splattered kill fests. There are multiple guilds murdering each other, robbing each other and destroying each other's shit every day. A streaming pirate got his merchant ship stolen by a guild at like 4AM this morning. Castle sieges aren't currently happening because the mechanic is supposedly broken. The first try [for our version] fell apart due to some software/hardware failure or another, so the Northern continent is basically where level 50s go to farm gear, gold and crafting stuffs... to prepare for the kill fests. If/when building a castle and carrying out a siege is actually possible we can expect the seas to become at least partially more peaceful.

I finally got my clipper made around 5AM today. An hour later I was coasting through the sea solo doing my banana pack run. When I turned it in and got that measly 1 Gilda I felt a wave of relief flow through me. That short trip was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences I've ever had in an MMO and it was glorious.

I have that feeling every time I make it to port with my fish without getting ganked :p
