I didn't plan on getting AC4 and was looking forward mostly to Killzone on the PS4... but wow, this game is a ton of fun. I just captured my ship and I find sea battles pretty cool so far. I don't know if it will get old, having just started, but so far it works well. I like that you can do well without stealth -- I'm not a huge fan of stealth games, which made me hesitant to get AC4 in the first place. But I often find it easier to get the job done with stealth, more fun, and not instant-death if it fails.

I've really enjoyed the AC games, I was looking forward to this one and immediately downloaded it yesterday. It took 7 fucking hours to download (thanks shitty rural cable company) and when I could play it, hard crashes after the 1st island mission. Yay PC games! It looked really really good at 2560x1440 with everything jacked up though.
Played the cracked version over the last couple days. Zero crashes but terrible fps. I bought and downloaded the legit version today and upgraded my video card drivers. Very good fps but have gotten 4 crashes!

Also this is the first singleplayer game I've ever played where you can't import your savegames, lol. Good thing this game is so fun I don't mind redoing two nights of playing.

I skipped AC3 and I wasn't going to get this game either. Mainly because I felt Ubisoft delayed the Watch Dogs release just to get the most out of AC4. Probably smart of them because I wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. I also didn't like the idea of naval battles, but damn, I am having a blast with this game. I've been off work all week and have done nothing but play AC4 for hours straight the past 2 days.

Does the retail version perform just as badly as the cracked Russian one?
the early release from last week is the exact same game as retail, I have both installed and ran a windiff and all the data files are exactly the same. The exe is different but its from different crack groups so I assume thats why. Still its better to probably run the retail one since the save files are incompatible, and future patches will probably just work off that. but DLCs don't seem to be unlocked atm on it.

i'm just waiting to see if they put out some good patches to fix the pc bugs, playing on ps4 atm but don't have all the cool shit DLCs since its just regular version

This game is really a fantastic, fantastic experience. Plays and looks exceptional on PS4 - some of the armor textures and such are just awesome to look at. I just got the cove and the house, so I don't think I'm too far in - but I've put 8 hours into this game just building up my ship (as far as I can) and nuking hunter ships/cruising around looking for treasure. For me, this is the best AC by a pretty wide margin. As much as I loved 2, I enjoy being a pirate so much more it isn't even funny. I like the outfits as well - the crafted animal skin ones (cat, shark, etc) look cool and the pirate ones do as well. The Altair armor is the most well done though, and I think you get that if you'd played previous games? Just feels out of place on the high seas, but it is textured terrifically.

What is everyone's stat for naval battles and combat fights?

I'm pretty early on in the game but I've found that the following works well:

1. Open with 2-3 chain shots (with mortar between if I want to pop consumables)
2. Ram them
3. Navigate to their back side if possible and just hang out blasting them with side cannons.
4. When boarding move the ship such that the rear (where my swivels are) are near the center of the enemy ship to maximize visibility.

I haven't really found a high skill cap, high dps way to fight in combat yet, which is kind of disappointing. That's one thing they did in AC1 that the sequels haven't had.

I use a lot of the side cannons and those heavy shots. Usually I can start boarding a ship in less than 30 seconds on level 25-30 ships with a minimum of 100 of a resource I need. I also have upgraded my ship quite a bit.

What do you guys think are the best things to upgrade on the ship first? I definitely can't even come close to downing a level 30 ship yet.

Also, anyone think this game is a bit too easy in some regards? I don't mind it at all, but the stealthy aspect was much more difficult in previous games I think. If 3 guys are looking at me and start chasing me, I can just run in the bush close by... they can even watch me get in the bush and still won't find me. Unless there is a difficulty feature I haven't looked at yet. But I have never had to go get my wanted level down anywhere and since the combat is so easy there has been no real risk to me just jumping into a crowd of enemies and fighting them instead of picking them off one by one.

Yeah the stealth aspect of this game is completely tuned to be easier. Every non-marksman soldier is basically blind and deaf. You can have a gun fight with a soldier and 15 meters away will be a group of soldiers in a circle jerk. It is pretty fun destroying a platoon of enemies in a plantation where you're just running to each one and assassinating them.

The AC games in general have gotten progressively easier since AC1. Since AC:B I've pretty much stopped thinking of it as a game with a real skill cap and more of an exploration game + interactive movie.

I'd love it if they included a 'hard mode' which had combat rules closer to AC1. No icons when they were about to attack, no ability to attack with hidden blade, iirc the swords weren't that effective at ripositing, no health regen in combat, bigger aggro radii etc.

So how similar is this game to Sid Meiers Pirates?
While it's easily the best pirate game since Sid Meier's Pirates!(not that there's been a lot of competition) it isn't really the same experience. I'm only maybe 10-15 hours into the game, half of that spent jacking with my ship, but there isn't really any factions like in Pirates!. In Pirates! you can kinda play for and against various competing faction like Spanish, French, Dutch, etc but in this game you're pretty much just motivated by personal gain, theres really no political factors to consider. The only real consequences/decisions to make regarding any sort of law/loyalty is managing your wanted level, the more ships you attack and capture, the higher your wanted level can climb, leading to more and more authorities coming after you. Think of it like Grand Theft Autos wanted system, the more stars(or in this case crossed swords) you get, the more the authorities are going to screw with you.

In AC4, you basically just exist to gain personal wealth and upgrade yourself and your ship and your home base.

But obviously there's a whole land-based storyline to participate in too, and you have to get to certain points in that to unlock certain ship upgrades. You can't just play 100% pirate mode on the open seas unfortunately.

The funny thing is that those ships are basically loot pinatas.

Basically they are metal delivery, which is nice.

Maybe I haven't pushed my wanted level high enough(I think 3 swords is the top I've reached so far), but I'd love to see some consequence similar to the threat of tanks showing up in GTA. Just some bigass behemoth Galleon that shows up and wrecks your shit with like 100 cannons on each side if you get too out of control.

Ubisoft should have gotten permission to use that song. The pirates singing it on the ship as you sail would have been comedy gold.
