How is Rocky not an underdog?

Even his 10 title defenses (which is the only thing that would make him a favorite) are presented to the audience as fake, thus making him a phony and not a legit contender

Yep, I literally just said that in the other thread. His "ten title defenses" that were "fake" weren't just presented to the audience. Lang publically accused him of "ducking him" and fighting bums

a) a video in public in front of the press of Lang accusing Rocky of fighting bums and ducking him. This confrontation and accusation would be boxing headline news. It would also presumably spark debate, discussion amongst boxing commentators of whether the claim was true.

His argument is "everyone but Mickey (inside the film universe) thought Rocky would win" - but that clearly isn't true. There's no evidence AT ALL that people thought Rocky was the heavy favourite. No scenes of just a single commentator hyping up his chances. The whole point of the first act is to beat the audience over the head with Rocky is going to lose. The whole point of this building up of Lang and tearing down of Rocky is to make his rematch victory even sweeter.

Every single Rocky movie after the first one had to deal with the same problem. Rocky has to be an underdog each time for there to be emotional investment for the audience. This is the screenwriter's dilemma. So how do you write a character who is perennially winning, as an underdog each time?

No one will watch a movie where the main character is a favorite, who is expected to win, who wins, and then movie ends. That's a boring movie.

The nature of these films necessitates that Rocky is presented as an underdog each time, otherwise there's no emotional investment for the audience

Mickey was scared of Clubber because he knew Clubber was a wrecking machine and hungry (thats a quote), Rocky wasnt concerned because he had become civilized and his fights were handpicked creampuffs. by all rights Rocky was favored to win because he had defended his title a number of times and won. Apollo was unsure but he still gave the nod to Rocky because he said he had a hard head. he didnt know that Mickey was hurt, and he didnt know that Rocky was just like him now. when Rocky lost it shocked everyone. of course the movie audience wasnt that shocked. maybe some were, but most knew by the third movie that there is a movie formula here where Rocky gets knocked down and picks himself back up after he hits rock bottom. Stallone keeps it simple because it works.

That girl has a weird looking head that she covers with Lego hair.

Now if we're talking Hope or Cassidy then maybe.

And it would probably be the other way around.

Every now and then Chuk nails one. Rocky was always a better boxer than Lang, but he was complacent and being the heavy favorite made him a different person than when he was just barely getting by and his one chance in life was to just last 12 rounds against Creed and prove he was a somebody. Him being the favorite is a major plot point and him losing was how they got him to be the underdog again.

Ossoi Ossoi has long realized that, though, so now he's trying to attack specific words and say dumb shit like "YOU SAID EVERYBODY BUT WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE THAT DON'T EXIST IN THAT UNIVERSE??? GOTCHA BITCH"

First accurate thing you've said. He nailed it indeed

Rocky didnt get "lazy". shit, he was in much better shape than he ever was in Rocky I and II. what happened to him and was explained in the movie is that Rocky just didnt care anymore about being the champ. he lost focus of what was important as a fighter. when the Rocky statue was unveiled, and Rocky announced at the ceremony that he was retiring, he was moving on with his life. away from boxing. then Clubber calls him out, riles him up by trying to turn his wife into a coalburner, then Rocky loses his shit and wants to fight him. but he's still lost his edge and thats why he lost because Clubber was hungry. Apollo steps in and again explains to Rocky that he needs to get hungry too, train like a poor nog trying to scrape out a living. getting in even better shape was just part of it, Rocky needed to get angry, he needed his fucks back. well he did. he got his fucks and was able to get inside Clubber's head and tire him out so he could lower the boom on him. being hungry is how Rocky went the distance and beat Apollo even though Apollo was in much better shape. Apollo beat Rocky down like a dog and Rocky still kept chugging along.

but he was complacent and being the heavy favorite

The movie literally beats you over the head with his complacency + his cherry picked opponents (meaning he isn't as good as the world thinks) so how the fuck are you sitll adamant he was the heavy favourite.

Even if this argument WAS restricted to "everyone inside the movie universe)" their opinion is destroyed by the "fighting bums" reveal.

lmao

Of course it's restricted to that. All underdog movies are considered underdogs inside its own universe and favorites for the audience. Have you never seen a movie before? Holy shit that explains so much

So you've changed your mind now?

Literally what I've said every time.

You even have the announcers saying it was an "incredible upset" after Rocky lost.

Now you and Araysar Araysar take your Ls and fuck off. Man it seems like every day I'm embarrassing him

the only real shock of the Rocky movies was Rocky not winning the first fight with Apollo. its stupid to claim Rocky was the underdog for Rocky III before he lost the title. he was champ until he wasnt.

Only in hindsight seeing where the franchise went.

It was initially a very grounded movie where he just wanted to be able to do something nobody else did, last 12 rounds with Creed. Him winning and becoming the greatest boxer in history is like Rambo and Fast and the Furious cranking things up to silly after a couple sequels
