Yeah if you think about it, those were all pretty much fresh ideas, fresh heroes/villans. I cant really remember any in the 2K era that are memorable aside the few superhero/marvel ones. Maybe Matrix? Blade? Fast & Furious? Maybe Mission Impossible? Maybe a few of the Quentin Tarantino flicks? Honestly I cannot think too many aside those right now that are standouts.

None of those are in the same league as Predator, Aliens or Die Hard.
Good action movie villains? I can't remember one in the last 20 years.

And the Road Warrior is always the main influence for ANY sort of media, when it's about post-apocalyptic world.
One more win for the 1980's.

Die Hard set the standard for SOOO many movies to follow. Think "Die Hard" on a .... (fill in ship ("Under Seige", plane "Passenger 57", a mountian "Cliffhanger," a bus ""Speed," an arena "Sudden Death," etc).

But "The Killer" took a new, wacko, over-the-top twist on the genre!

Anyone mentioned top gun yet? Does it even count as an action movie? I don't think it beats most of the movies already listed but deserved a mention if it qualifies

Top Gun is totally an action movie and while I will always be down to play with the boys, it's not in the top 10.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

The entrance to the alley where the funeral fights kicks off is a very real place in chinatown but the alley extends exactly 15 feet back. Whole thing was a soundstage. First trip to SF I forced my friends to drive me there like it was a John Carpenter Mecca, night was completely saved by bad ass Chinese food and a chance to wander around a weird part of SF where there's not shit on the ground

This. We could easily sit in a room with a sweet setup and watch every one of these greats mentioned back to back as long as we had enough beer to hydrate.
