Browser Addon Suggestions?

These days it's so hard to be sure that what you're installing is safe, or even useful. It seems most reviews are anon, or bot sourced, and even after downloading one that proves safe and useful, there is no telling how long it will remain that way, due to Browser version changes and the inevitable pay gate that gets added to anything with a sizable user base.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions they wish to share. Preferably ones you are using currently.

While my query applies to any sort of Add-on/Extension, I'm currently searching the market for a Video Downloader. Especially now that YouTube and friends have gotten so anti-creator, there is no telling how long some channels will last or if videos will be watchable the next day. So I've taken to backing them up more often than usual.

My primary Browser is Firefox.

I have no objections paying for good software, so it doesn't have to be free to use.

I use Noscript, Ublock Origin, and Cookie Auto-Delete. They pretty much cover all the privacy/security side of things, though it does take some effort on a site-by-site basis if you use them correctly (everything disabled unless enabled per site)

Websites often run scripts from 10+ different sources now, and you can easily disable all scripts everywhere and only enable the 1-3 you need for a site to function. Cookie auto-delete is great as well as you really only need to keep a few cookies for sites you use often, instead of the several hundred that you can acquire within a day of browsing.

Keepa for Amazon stuff

No idea about video downloaders, but you can often on many sites just right click a video and save as if it's HTML5 or whatever

I do uMatrix over Noscript but they are very similar. Chrome is going to be deprecating part of the web call API that allows adblockers to work as well as they do now so I've also moved entirely to Firefox again.

I swapped today. All the extensions I use in Chrome are there. Seems a bit quicker bringing up sites. DEFINITELY heavier on the memory though. But who cares...

yea use ublock origin and turn it off for foh, to do that just be on foh and goto the browser plugin icon and click the big power button, that selectively turns it off for the site you're on.

if you buy a lot online, use honey/retailmenot plugin

at checkout the plugin will automatically have a popup window, like "click for more savings" and it'll try out every coupon code that is current, does it work?

yup, even for like online pizza hut ordering

Gonna put this here since we are talking the max exodus about to hit. I've never used Opera before so not sure if good or not. Does seem interesting tho. Anyone using it?

Opera is based on Chromium now so it could potentially be affected by this change as well if they don't choose to roll it back, but they have their own built-in ad blocker which may allow it to sidestep the issue. Brave is a similar Chromium based dude with built-in ad blocker, and otherwise there is also Vivaldi which I'm not sure if they have anything built-in. All of these projects have commented saying they'll be reacting to this change in some manner to keep empowering users despite Google messing around with the API.

Right now I'm using ublock origin and privacy badger. Privacy badger is good for disabling click through bullshit and other analytical honey pots.

The only thing that keeps me on Chrome is easily syncing bookmarks and passwords between devices. I've already given in to having Google know more about me than I do, but I'd rather not spread that around to other companies if I can help it.

you can have lastpass extension on firefox too, does the samething... have to pay for mobile tho

Firefox has Sync that works between devices so long as your mobile device can install it too. I use it on Android because I can't root my old Samsung so it is the only decent ad blocking I can get on a phone when I'm at work.

I don't see that anyone has really answered your question about a video downloader. I used to use DownThemAll, which was fucking awesome, but it has been broken for years now and the author claims he will never, ever port it to Chrome because of the shenanigans Google puts into their api's or some such. I don't remember exactly, but that's close.

In my search for a replacement to that, I eventually came across Internet Download Manager, and I liked it so much that I bought a lifetime license. It has a Chrome integration extension too, that usually pops up a button the moment you start playing a YouTube (or PornHub, etc.) video. Or you can manually add them, or insert custom filters so that every time it sees a particular type of link it uses IDM, and a ton of other shit I don't even use.

It works fucking great, and I highly recommend it if ripping videos or bulk downloading is your thing. Or even normal downloads, it makes them much, much faster due to multiple connections, and makes them significantly easier to resume as well. I can't remember how much it was, but it wasn't super expensive from what I remember.

I use Ant Video Downloader for Firefox. It does require you to install a helper program, but there's no adware shenanigans or anything that I can see. I've been using it for years and they update it regularly whenever Youtube breaks it again. Helper program is one of the workarounds that they came up with apparantly (the addon worked without one a few years ago)

Another FF addon I recommend is Dark Night mode, it lets you automatically switch many websites from black letters on a white background to white letters on black background, which I much prefer for evening viewing. Doesn't work on everything but it's easy to disable (on a per website basis if desired)

Also been using Waterfox as a secondary browser lately and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a firefox fork that removes telemetry/data collection and doesn't nag you about unsigned addons (by which feature firefox managed to break all addons for millions of people earlier this year)
