Considering the omnipresence on TV of cooking shows and cooking reality shows, I am surprised there are not more fictions about cooking. This movie looks ok with a nice cast (we barely see it in the trailer, but the marvelous Oliver Platt is in it too).

There are actually quite a few movies about cooking and food trucks but most end up being romantic comedies or dramas.

Loved it. Jon Favreau actually turned up as a guest judge on Top Chef while they were filming this, he actually spent a few months on a food truck with Roy Choi (who basically started the whole food truck scene).

is loosely inspired by Choi and the food truck movement. Choi appears in the end credits of the film and worked as a technical advisor to Favreau on the film. "I went with him in his car to every one of his restaurants - like a ride-along if you're doing a cop movie," said Favreau. Additionally, Choi sent Favreau to a French culinary school and then had him train in several of Choi's kitchens.Choi "consulted on every kitchen scene, every food porn-worthy shot - and turned what can sometimes look like fakery into an authentic representation of the inside of a restaurant kitchen."

looks legit, i'll bite.

It would make sense that he did some training for this movie. Jon's knife skills are top notch in this flick.

Yeah it actually looks real, good movie too. The end was cheesy but meh, movies like this are cheesy.

I'm almost sure that was a body double with the knife skills. Like when he was breaking down the hog early in the movie? That's the perfect example of a pro "making it look easy", like when you watch an Iron Chef break down a salmon into 12 perfect fillets. It looks really easy but it's basically decades of muscle-memory that can't be taught, just daily drill.

As someone who has worked as a chef for the better part of his life, I can tell you that this was probably the only movie into the profession that I can recall anything about. Which tells me there haven't been any movies about it, or they were all pretty shitty.

The hoffman/favreau clash was prettymuch perfect, as I have seen that exact situation play out twice in my life working in legit kitchens. Beancounter vs chef always ends up badly if the beancounter owns the restaurant.

just teaching someone to hold something the right way (claw) you won't chop off fingers, which is where you see him chopping and looking around the first 1min of the movie, that was all him, just have someone claw a veg, teach them to hit the top part of their knuckle, chop 10 onions, and you can look like that.

was it me? or the fact that jon favreau looked like an even fatter louis CK? it just seemed like favreau thought, what if i write my character like it was louis CK, playing louie (the fx show), playing the chef.

also a few jokes, like the critic is named ramsay michael, and the publicist wanted him to go on hells kitchen.

I don't have much to add to this other than the movie was awesome and, since I believe it was a limited release, if it is in your area, you should go see it.

Well worth.
