110k? Damn. Everything started getting unwieldy after 40k for me.
I semi cheated in that when I reached a stable point with positive cash flow, I went afk to do other stuff and came back to a pile of cash which allowed for a quick expansion that took care of everything I needed.

I'm not even sure grids are good. 4-way intersections are a bitch on traffic.
I've had to get rid of almost all stop signs except in dead end areas. All one ways near the highway and in industrial zones to keep things from backing up.

I keep getting to about 10K people and then my traffic backs up so bad that my power plants can't get their coal and the town loses power and everything goes to shit.

I really hope I don't have to build a town like the damn Sim City traffic workaround with just one giant snaking 1-lane road through the entire town, that's going to suck but intersections are a clusterfuck.

Why, oh god, why is there NO autosave feature?? I was actually doing pretty good about keeping my game saved before making any big changes to the landscape in case I fucked up but then I went like 90 minutes without making any big changes and my computer promptly rebooted for a Windows Update (yes... it was 3AM... yes this game is addictive). All that work... el poofo!

I will say that this game challenges me in ways that the new Sim City never did. I got used to being very lazy with Sim City and Skylines will not tolerate such tom foolery when it comes to planning.

roundabouts, roundabouts, roundabouts, roundabouts. Roundabouts everywhere and no real traffic issues(garbage still struggles at times, but that's about it)

Got up to 70k before I stopped last night, have more traffic problems to iron out next time. Garbage collection is also gumming things up for me.

Garbage is definitely my biggest issue. I even have enough incinerators that I burn more than I collect, but I still end up with a random dump that ends up full and stops sending out trucks once in a while, and a whole section of the map will start bitching about their garbage not being picked up.

Was trying to work on a subway system last night, getting it connected and a circular route set up is a bit of a pain in the ass. It seems to be working, the little green arrows showing the flow of the subway are all connected, and the info tool is showing that hundreds of people are using it, but I keep getting a popup warning constantly that my line isn't connected properly. I don't know whats up with that.

Sounds like you have a lot of working lines and one incomplete. Should look like a small greyish-white box with a blue bar. You can delete it by right clicking on the line, or just right click until they're all deleted and redraw the lines. I've a metro connecting different parts of the city with bus branching out of the metro and I think its helping with traffic but I'm not really sure. ~2k using the buses and ~4k using the metro seems of 70k people seems a small amount to me. I added a whole new sector that took my pop from 50-70k and it's garbage trucks everywhere. I think I'm just going to redistribute incinerator locations because having everything in one spot is nice for pollution but it makes for a traffic headache. Also, I got rid of my dumps when I got incinerators. It took a bit to empty them and make sure capacity was covered by incinerators but it freed up some space.

I'm not sure you can place incinerators in one area and have it cover entire map. I know initially when I tried that with a dump, it was a big problem because it was too far out and no trucks would leave. Soon as I moved it closer to where I had my population, trucks starting going out to pick up.

I've pretty much allocated a block for a incinerator for every "area". Since if you put any residential within that pollution circle, they get sick. I try my best to put it out of the way, but when I buy next tile, that "out of the way" becomes "Right in the middle of expansion". Haven't had any problems since I started making incinerators for every "area", I also have recycling policy turned on.

I hit 11,000 last night and here are some of my observations.

Traffic is not bad to manage (yet) as long as you have medium roads (upgrade later to large) that can connect to an outside connection. I use a grid system which has the 4 lane medium road running north and south and then using smaller roads east and west. I have a roundabout that connects to the outside highway....(or is that a freeway.... does anyone know if the existing roads that are the "outside" connections are the same as highway?). When I did notice some red/congested area's I upgraded to a bigger road and everything is smooth again.

Garbage on the other hand seems to be a broken mess. I have 4 landfills placed in 4 corners of city, with a highway connecting them on the outside/edge of the city and 2 incinerators going and I still get garbage piling up!! This is for an 11k town..what happens when we hit 50k or 100k!!

Yea garbage and incinerator management is a pain.....I can see me re-designing my layout based on this alone once I have reached a huge budget surplus and unlocked enough parcels. I have the issue when my "edge" of town becomes turns into the center.....

I might try putting my incinerators closer to my population areas. Right now they're all out at the edge of town(like 6 of them) on the end of my industrial area.

Also, is there any reason to keep manufacturing industrial areas once you have a well educated population? I've had a college for a while now and I'm thinking of tearing down the polluting & fire hazard mess that is all my factories and just replacing it with offices. It seems like an entire town of high density residential + offices might help offset that added incinerator pollution

The mod support right from release day is a pretty smooth move on Paradox's part. Lately we have been getting short changed on that from other games to the point where some AAA titles don't even have mod support.

I switched to offices as soon as I could. If you do, just make sure you have good infrastructure for importing, since all your goods will come from out of town, instead of making them in-town.

It was rough for a little bit because I put in the education policy to make young adults choose education over a job but it evened out once I got more graduates and adults.

Second city, about ready to expand into another tile... it's 100% offices no industrial.

I have a pile of incinerators in one spot that services my three tile map and it's all about easy highway access and keeping the highways moving. I've basically copied the alternating one way grid and frontage roads system I've seen in real life, but altered it a bit to account for the AI. If I get a warning trash is piling up I immediately pause the game and unfuck the traffic problems it or everything goes to shit. Roads look like a mess but traffic moves. I'll sit down and try to beautify it at some point. Long term I think it'll work best with incinerators being in each district but I like it in one spot now to make sure my highways don't suck.

Also, the only areas that tend to back up are the incinerators(dump trucks), cargo train/docks and industrial areas. I read on the cities subreddit that workers don't always have to physically drive to work or it'd make things far to hard to manage so only some commute. But I think industry/commerce has to move on the highways or it'd make some other parts of the game irrelevant, like coal to the power plant etc. Which would explain why I only have traffic flow problems in industry/dump town while my residential/office districts are relatively clear.
