It's a good game but it definitely showcases how outdated true turn based rpgs are.
this is a different statement.

Turn based RPGS as a whole, are not only not outdated, but are in a massive resurgence. we've had this discussion. They started to die out due to consoles, and "modern audience" thinking of the early 2000's. Diablo, morrowind, Kotor>bioware. Bioware (and Bethesda) nearly killed the turn based rpg.

however, Xcom and Wasteland said. no sir. I think not. The success of Wasteland kickstarter, lead DIRECTLY to Pillers of eternity, and Divinity:Os. Pillers was rtwp. Divinity:eek:s turn based.
divnity:eek:s crushed Pillars. Pathfinder Kingmaker was rtwp. 75% of the player based modded it to be turn based. Owlcat noticed. Wrath of the Rightioues launched with both RTWP and turn based. Pillars 2 also had both.

During this period, other games, tactical games exploded as well. Victoria 3, crusader kings, etc. Xcoms, and xcom likes.
Dungeon crawls also made a huge comeback in the indie scene. both turnbased and real time.

falloutlikes. such as underail, encased, broken roads, etc. pc indie games have tons of turn based rpgs.

Card games such as hearthstone, and slay the spire, and all those clones.

Currently turn based rpgs are outselling action rpgs pretty consistently.

The previous comment was about CONSOLE rpgs though. where I don't think tactical games like victoria 3 are even on. Also specified AAA. which is also another matter.

I agree with that. If you aren’t leveled high enough to be able to survive the fight outright you had to do the fight over several times trying to learn the attack patterns. Some fights with the intentional fakeouts were pretty annoying. They were all learnable though with some patience and some of the more difficult ones were very satisfying when you beat them.

I do not like parrying in games but still really enjoyed this, enough that I may give Sekiro a chance. Something I never played due to disliking parrying so much. You know what I don’t do? Go into the Sekiro thread day after day saying how much I hate the game and parrying when there are plenty of games without it. Absolute retard behavior.
Do it, but bet you won’t. Sekiro is its own animal, can't really play any other action game while playing Sekiro. Shit like hold block to regen stamina faster and max aggression at all times.

JRPG AAA turn based games that I know of getting released are Persona 4 remake in 27 and most likely Persona 6 in 28. While 6 is confirmed to be in development, I doubt it will release before 4 and also not in the same year to compete with it. Though with a 2 year perspective, we also might get the announcement/release of a new DQ game too.

Turn based CRPGs, other than Larian and Owlcat are there any AAA studios doing those? Lots of indies though. The devs behind Atom released their fantasy CRPG two days ago into 1.0.

Unironically, one of the better JRPGs in "modern" times, if you can get past all the weeb shit. But weeb shit is pretty standard for turn-based RPGs.

I think we are just talking different types of games. You're talking CRPGs with turn based combat and I'm talking JRPGs with turn based combat which is what I assumed we were talking about based on expedition 33

Guess I missed where people were actually talking about this game. The last few pages look like one giant derail.
I just started this yesterday, trying to wrap my head around wtf is going on.

Act 3 isn't structured like every other game, so as long as you're not an autistic boomer who can't handle anything different, you should be good

Didn't want to ruin the experience for myself so trying to avoid walkthru stuff. I did google tips for beginners.

You're starting a game a year late and wondering why people aren't discussing gameplay at this point?

Act 3 is exactly like FF7 disc 3 from 1997. You go straight to the Northern Crater to face Sephiroth and end the game, or you get overpowered as fuck doing whatever side shit you want with open access to traverse the world. I don't know why people are acting like this framework is new. It's all just challenges, super bosses, or side character exploration that has no bearing at all on the main storyline or its conclusion.

I also started ER late and peeps here were very helpful and they are still talking about that game to date. I took the derail to mean its not a 10/10 game, I'll figure it out. Ambiturner Ambiturner gave me great advice in Elden Ring (to Hulk Smash it).
