Computer Issues

Nope. All my sleep and hibernation power saving settings are off.

The fact that it doesn't happen while actively playing games, browsing the web, etc. is where I'm stumped, because that rules out some of the more obvious things like PSU, CPU, MB, etc. I mean, I can alleviate it by just turning my PC off every night, but it's just a huge WTF.

Tried rolling back the latest Windows Update and I was still able to reproduce it.

BIOS up to date? Trying clearing CMOS, maybe test it with one stick of RAM to rule out any weird memory issues. Couldn’t hurt to reseat and repaste the CPU if it’s fairly old. Failing that, reformat and reinstall windows.

Do you by chance have extra cables or slots on your power supply that you could try for your GPU? Is the CPU stuff seated well?
I swapped both my GPU and all my CPU cooling this weekend. New cooler, new paste, reseated the heat sink, etc. Temps under load and idle are slightly better now, but watching HWMonitor, temps were never an issue even before - unless it was happening in a "low power" state.

BIOS was my next try. I updated BIOS last March?, I think. It hasn't been updated crazy recent, but looking at it I'm only out of date by 2 updates.

I'm also going to run a memtest before the BIOS update, just on the off-chance it's happening during idle memory cleanup.

If the BIOS thing doesn't fix it, reformatting was my next go-to.

Mem test in Windows came up clean, but then the computer "locked up" on restart when loading into Windows, while the BIOS logo was still present.

Loaded into Windows on restart, but then it locked up again after about 20 seconds in Windows. Decided "fuck it", booted from USB and attempted to install Windows. Locked up at about 42% into the Windows install, so I restarted and figured I'd try a new harddrive. I was able to fully get Windows installed, but then when it was doing all the "setup" checks, it restarted again.

CPU, temps, etc. are all stable inside BIOS - no lockups, restarts, etc. even after 30 minutes. And under load(gaming) when it was loading into Windows, nothing was restarting, locking up, etc. It seems most likely to me it might be a PSU issue, but then you would think it would've caused issues under load, since it seems to be happening when "loading" Windows and the spike in power.

I'm totally stumped. It could be CPU, RAM, PSU, motherboard even. Either way, as I slowly diagnose and replace each component, I could've just built a whole new fucking PC. I'm pretty much ready to just chuck this thing into the fucking trash and buy a Starforge PC.

This is exactly what happened to me late last year. And the same reason I decided I am never building my own ever again.

It turned out it was my CPU in my case but I replaced almost every component besides the GPU before I was finally able to figure out what the fuck was actually doing it.

Never again.

Let us know what the problem was when you find out, usually it's a bad ram stick so hopefully it's just that...

Yup. I even bought a new GPU, just on the off-chance it was that and I needed the upgrade anyhow.

Chances are I'm just going to return the GPU and buy a new fucking PC.

I don't have the patience at my age to go component by component, ram stick by ram stick anymore. Not to mention, with how huge coolers, cards, etc. are these days, taking apart my PC ram stick by ram stick is a giant fucking PITA. I pretty much have to remove the CPU cooler every goddamn time I want to get at the RAM. And I have 64GB of RAM, so I have 4 goddamn sticks to test.

I doubt I'll ever diagnose it. I'm probably ordering a Starforge PC tonight and I'll return the GPU to Best Buy this weekend. The only thing stopping me at this point is my OCD in trying to "fix" the issue and leaving it unsolved. I'm like 90% sure it's CPU or PSU, but my luck is I'll replace both of those and it'll end up being the fucking motherboard or something.

You can’t just pull off one of the CPU cooler fans and yank a few sticks out?
you ever got stabbed w/ one of those stupid fan clips, we have ai technology and still can't einstein a better way of attaching a cpu fan

Last weekend. Clip stabbed me and the fins cut me when I pulled an old Noctua.

I can. My plan was a BIOS update and yanking 2 sticks tonight. If it still does it, I'll go stick by stick.

If that doesn't diagnose it as the RAM, I'm just buying a new PC.

I recommend a nice mid-sized sledge hammer. It usually fixes most problems, PC or otherwise.
