Yeah, good point, it doesn't even need to be a mouse. Anything in your usb chain can cause everything/anything usb to go sideways. The wife's desktop has had a number of issues like that with a hub or extender cable getting wonky. Causes entirely unrelated (except for using usb) problems.
yea my wifes usbc docing station does the same every 6 months, unless i remove all the nice organized wires and literally unplug everything and the power source, not even a funky dock, its a dell oem

I wouldn't have guessed that one screwy USB could affect others. I really hope that's not the case because it would necessitate a new motherboard, right?
In our case, I just unplug everything and reboot with only a mouse and kb that I can verify are ok on another computer. If it works, then great, use it that way long enough to verify that the problems don't come back, then add things back one and a time until it breaks again. If it doesn't work, change usb ports and try again. I think she has one port that's perpetually fucked, but I never remember which one because I'm retarded and don't tape over it or something. The problem is usually a shitty amazon hub that's gone fucky. It's annoying because the problems can be intermittent, probably due to shitty wiring causing occasional shorts that wonk the usb until the next restart. Then it's fine until it shorts again.

I highly doubt the entire usb system is fucked. Probably possible, but I've never had it happen. Even if it was, you could get a cheap usb card to use instead of replacing the motherboard (even though you might want to out of spite). Much much more likely to be a peripheral issue like above or some driver/software thing imo. Compared to anything else, just unplugging everything and testing with a proven mouse/kb is the easiest thing. (also, wasn't entirely kidding about the ps2 mouse. It can be worth keeping one in your wirebox for times like this.)

Yeah, I think I had 3 of the thinkpad docks die on my work laptop before I stopped asking for replacements. I barely ever even undocked the things.

literally the most stupid thing after i unplugged everything and the dock couldn't work

i had put a right angle adapter on the cable so it comes from the back instead of jutting from the side

and it worked for 6months until it didn't, i took it off and magically both monitors and the web cams came back to life. and i can't buy another cable cuz this is the physical usbc cable from the dock to the laptop

i swear off on any adapters and shit, if i need hdmi to dp, i'll get it as a cable, ain't fucking w/ adapters ever again
