There are other reasons why this might be a good thing for some people. If all you can afford is a shit-hole apartment with a stupid room mate, taking/making calls and video conferences won't work. If you do something that requires huge amounts of uploads, and this place offers premium upload speeds, super. If you have a small work group that needs a space once a week, makes sense.

But if you're just paying money simply in order to have an office space for no good reason? That's dumb.

I've started doing all my business calling from my wood shop. It's awesome.
don't you have a super fan expelling dust n shit, or is that only when you're drilling shit? idk if thats run 24/7

I am not sure about others, but I do certain things better when I am surrounded by people who are similar focused on whatever it is they are up to. Plus, and this is subjective, the shit I do for money is dull as fuck but I am able to get away from my office a few days a week to do something I actually enjoy and I rather spend this time somewhere other than where the boredom happens. Having said that, the coworking places very often are full of worthless hipster faggots so one has to find a place that is a good fit.

That only runs when I need it. Other than that, it's a super-insulated building that is incredibly quiet, and has a bank of north-facing windows to give me a nice, soft natural light. I love it out there.

I could understand it.

my home office, I need to pay for electricity and heating/AC. Office tv/radio. High speed internet, which is still only personal, not that high end business shit. home repairs, etc.
I have to make my own food. or order out, etc at solo prices.

I have cats. which, not a big deal. but, dogs/kids certainly could justify needing an actual office, in another location.
I don't ever need to do client meetings or conferences in person. but, again, im sure that something these co-working locations would handle. meeting rooms, that aren't literally just the kitchen..

I have an actual house. many places your work from home startup, is in a condo/apartment, that doesn't have a free room to call your Office.

and obviously, some people are just really shit about regiment. they NEED that office, to keep themselves in check. stop them from calling it a day early, not making their bed, etc.
Personally, I can handle it. Work ALWAYS comes first. My work hours are my work hours. don't call me, dont try to chitchat, etc.

instead of lounging and typing away at Starbucks for the cost of a coffee everyday(now you don't even have to do that), you dress up in office attire, pay a membership fee and type away w/ other ppl that have done the same. it's like a private club for working.

Ya, it baffles me how this shit is so gotdam popular.

In portland, for example, wework rents some extremely fucking expensive properties. They are throwing a fucking metric asston of cash around.

You could staple blankets to the walls and door of their closet to soundproof it.

The Quiet Place movie has a possible solution as well. Basically it's a sealed, insulated wooden box with an oxygen mask piped into it. You could build two of them right into the closet, easy peasy! That would leave even more room for clothes and shit too!

The important question is, if you see something you like in the pgt, can you put on some porn and rub one out quick? If that is frowned upon, that's a definite downside compared to working from home.

Yes. The Westfield mall off of the Powell BART station in SF has one. It has a bunch of glass walls as I recall and you can see inside.

I never saw one of these things until I moved to California and never really understood them. I assumed they were simply some aspect of tech culture I didn’t understand (I’m not a techie.)

I guess the tech revolution is happening so fast, everyone is starting to work from home instead of traditional 9-5s making these popular?

I kind of cant wrap my head around that. Same with empty malls and no retail shops anywhere.

Times, they are a changin

Is the co-working target demographic all the losers I saw in college who had easy enough majors or were planning on dropping out that would go to libraries, study halls and other communal areas to exclusively socialize with their buddies instead of studying?
