There any new options on the horizon for 1440p 144hz/gsync? That Asus ROG thing with gsync looks mighty fancy, but it's a TN panel which I'd really rather get away from, but I'm not really seeing any options for an IPS/1440p/144hz monitor?
The Asus monitor is really nice, I have one. However... my 27" Korean IPS sitting right next to it looks so much better. Asus monitor for gaming, IPS for video streaming/movies/etc.

I just received my Acer XB270HU last week and it's pretty incredible. Image quality wise it's every bit as good as my 10 year old Dell Ultrasharp if not better, and the G-sync capability is awesome. However I'm starting to wonder if the higher or variable refresh rate is giving me head aches or eye strain. Noticed it a bit over the weekend as I was setting everything up. Not sure if it was because of the monitor or something else. I generally don't get head aches at all. It wasn't debilitating or anything, just some light pain behind the eyes.

The glossy bezel is definitely annoying though. The edges facing the screen reflect what the screen is showing. Pretty fucking stupid decision on their part.

So is it time to upgrade my i5 2500K chip yet? I got the thing OCed to 4.2 and its running sold for the past 4 or so years Ive had it. Im either contemplating on getting a new one or just slapping in a 970 gtx and waiting for a few more years. But i dont want to throw away money on a 20% increase. So is it time now or not yet? I cant see the thing being a bottleneck yet, or is it?

It's really on the bubble. You could wait a year or so if you wanted to, or you could see a 30% performance boost right now. If you're a cheapass, I'd wait one more cycle.

But is it a bottleneck? Because thats the true question here. Anything I play on it recently seems not even maxing out the core(s). Also the 30% boost, would it be just better to buy a 970 for like a 100% boost from my 5850?

Totally depends what you're playing, what GPU you have, what resolution you play at etc. Some games use the CPU more than others. But in general terms the vast majority of games are far more GPU bound than CPU bound.

I play at 1080 and I have a AMD 5850 in that computer(yeah I know, but it still works). I have another computer with a 3rd gen i5 (i5 3870?) and an AMD 280X gpu. Its my kids that play on them, shit like GTA5 and other steam games.

I played GTA 5 at 1080p on my HTPC, which is an i5-750 with a 670 GTX. I had to dial a few things back, but overall it hung on pretty well. In your situation, your GPU is a massive bottleneck for sure. Just upgrade the GPU for now, see how it goes, and then decide on whether to pull the trigger on new CPU/mobo/memory.

I still use my i7-960 and haven't really seen a compelling reason to upgrade yet, can't imagine there is much of a reason to replace a 2500k yet.

I saw that Asus monitor on Linus' channel and it looks nice, but I'm not sure on it only being 75hz. Never used a 75hz monitor, so not really even sure how that looks.

edit: i apparently saw a different monitor on there, this one looks miiiiighty sexy.

If you have $300-$400 to upgrade, a video card upgrade to something like a 970 would be a MUCH bigger performance boost than a processor/mobo upgrade (for gaming)

an i5 2500k + a 970 video card would perform significantly better than a new i5 6600k + your old 5850.

Obviously upgrading both would be nice, but if you're on a budget go with the video card upgrade for sure.

That video card upgrade is probably at least a 100% upgrade in performance, if not more like 150%. The CPU upgrade is much, much less (more like 20-30% as mentioned here, and that even depends on the game)

Thanks, thats what Ill do then. get my rig ready for Star Wars and other games this fall.
Curious, what Star Wars game? I run a piss old C2D E8400 (LOL) and a Gfx 560ti. Works fine for office and old games. I'm really tempted to get Skylake - or Skylake-E for sure.

Anyone use one of those Korean IPS panels? I've been looking at getting a 27" 1440p without draining my bank account.green-sumon eBay always has a bunch of different ones, and it's all free shipping if they're coming out of Korea or China or whatever. There are quite a few different brands though that I know absolutely nothing about.

Id just spend the money on the Acer. $800 is nothing for something you will use everyday for 5-6 years.
