I should probably give it a try myself, but I do appreciate the help. I'm thinking everything but these two components should be replaced:

CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply - Newegg.com Corsair 650W PSU
COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Newegg.com HAF 922 case, I was really surprised it has USB 3.0. But I also wouldn't be surprised if it needs an upgrade or would benefit in some major way from one.
I also have a 1TB non-system drive that still holds porn just fine, so I don't see a reason to upgrade that. The peripherals of monitor, keyboard, and mouse are all relatively recent and I'm happy with them.

Otherwise: motherboard, cpu and cooler, gpu, memory, and ssd. I'd like it to keep under $1k and I usually try to aim for that sweet spot of value/$, I don't really care for pushing graphical settings as long as the game is playable.

System Build - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING - PCPartPicker

You can go cheaper then that and also go with RYzen but that is a decent starting point.

Thanks! EVGA cards still noisy? Been pretty happy with my MSI noise level.

And 8GB is still the standard? I thought 16GB would have been by now. I'm running 12GB in my current machine because of how hungry Chrome is and how many tabs I keep open.

I'm running 16 but you can get by perfectly fine with just 8 and since it's a bit of a budget build that is something that can easily be expanded in the future. Two 8 gig sticks will run you around $70 more then the two 4 gig sticks.

I like EVGA cards because they are the only ones that won't try any bullshit with RMA's if you put a waterblock on it. All those 1060 cards are pretty much the same so just get what is the best deal.

I'm considering buying a gaming desktop. A couple questions:
-I would love to avoid assembling myself but I can if I need to. Is the markup on fully assembled machines crazy? I haven't shopped around much yet at all to compare prices.
-If the markup isn't crazy where is a good site to shop for fully assembled machines?
-If the markup is crazy is Newegg still a good starting place to shop for parts?

Thanks, I'll check that out. I've never messed with that setting before. Will it affect my CPU overclock? I'm really looking to get a nice, mild overclock on stock cooler and run this thing as a daily driver for several years, so I'm not looking to push it really far.

As for RAM speed, my mobo clocks it at 2133 to start. It won't load the 2933 XMP profile at 1.35v. I tried 2800 at 1.3v which booted and ran fine, but the next time the power cycled it decided it was an issue and reset to 2133. Haven't power cycled yet at 2666 but things are going quite smoothly right now so if this is as far as I get, that is fine with me. I assume a future AMD bios fix will allow for more QVL RAM.

If anything, it will make your CPU overclock more stable. Here's some super smart dude from AMD getting into the nuts and bolts. TLDR at 18:00 minutes, first thing he'd do is set SoC to 1.1v after trying XMP. Going from 2133 to 2933 will be a big bump in overall performance.

Thanks again for the help. Already purchased the parts after making a few changes to that list. Feels weird purchasing parts without sitting on it for days or weeks.

I was going to but noticed my username was in the list. Then I wised up and noticed I could just make the same list outside of my account

System Build - Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING X - PCPartPicker

I didn't feel like I needed an i7, I don't play CPU intensive games. I change the cooler and GPU for noise concerns. And I opted for more memory because I use this computer to work from home sometimes. Mostly memory-hungry Chrome tabs, but PyCharm regularly takes 1.5GB as well as my company's product. Hell, just right now, no work stuff or game open, I'm sitting at 4.7GB out of 12 used. 8 seemed a bit close.

You have almost the same rig as mine (except I have an i7 and 1070) and I love it.

Also evga has a customer for life with me, their step up program is AMAZING

Why a $35 cooler with a locked processor? Seems like an easy money save.

Noise. I don't plan on overclocking, but even under load, I don't want to hear the fan spinning up.

EVGA uses blowers. Or, at least, they did the last time I tried their products. Seems they're still using them if I can assume one fan = blower. Too much noise.

I couldn't figure out the need for an i7. Though, you play WoW...is that still CPU intensive?

Wow is CPU intensive, I also stream, run plex, etc.

Also when I bought my PC the MSI Mobo + i7 was a combo deal that worked out such a way that essentially the mobo was free.

My 1070 is the quietest card I've ever had. When it 'kicks on' you hear a tiny 'whooom' noise for literally 1 second. I honestly thought it wasn't working at first.

Not trying to sway you, i think what you picked was good

WoW is very Cpu intensive and uses multiple cores but is bottle necked by the speed of a single core. For what you said you will use the computer for I say you are fine with what you picked. Especially for wow. If it isn't too late I would suggest spending just a little extra to get the 7700k and mobo for it just because the cpu/mobo is about the only thing most people never upgrade unless doing an entire new build. Might as well get the best you can. Not a big deal though and since you don't want to overclock it isn't the end of the world. If you do get it and want to overclock you pretty much have to delid the cpu.

Don't worry, if I started playing WoW, my cpu choice wouldn't matter because my wife would have killed me. And she's completely justified in that "overreaction", I act like an addict around MMO type games.

I get what you're saying about the upgrade thing. I went this long with an i5-760 though, so I didn't feel the need.

So I had a rough time with the NZXT Kraken X62 that I ordered so the new machine isn't online. Anyone else have experience with it?

The backplate didn't fit well and it isn't "solid" it's kind of a flexible plastic. The standoffs go into that from above up top of course and those screwed in just fine. The caps for the other side of the stand offs wouldn't screw in more than a few threads deep. I snapped one standoff in half and broke the backplate also.

I don't know if mine is completely defective bolts or what, this isn't rocket science and not my first AiO, I have had open loops also, and probably a dozen different random HSF setups.

Here is what the mounting hardware looks like.

Kraken-X62-12.jpg

Top left is the backplate and the 4 corners there slide back and forth depending on which socket you have.

Fairly center is the standoffs you use for the Intel socket that I have. The ones with the short stubby ends are the other socket that I forget which has a metal plate around it already so no backplate necessary. Then of course the nuts that secure it is right above.

I sent a message to NZXT and they are already sending me a full new mounting kit for free which is nice. Going to take 5 days plus or minus 2 days. I submitted for a return/replace with Amazon also and I will just pull the mounting kit from that in the meantime to try and get online faster, it should be here tomorrow or the next day.

Man if thats plastic, that thing is crap. I would return it. The whole purpose of the metal bracket is to stabilize the big cooler on the mobo, spread out the area of forces.

It's an AiO, not much to stabilize except for the waterblock.
