Do you guys have any case suggestions?
I'm a big fan of Antec and for my build last winter I got thep280. It isn't flashy but it's solidly built, and always ~100$ or less this time of year. Front filters catch most of the dust that comes into my system. Also the dual top exhaust fans were a huge winner for me because I usethisCPU cooler with the fan pointed vertically. I game on a single 660ti at 1440p (soon to be 780) and temperatures are always reasonable.

Do you guys have any case suggestions? I would prefer the case to be under $150. At some point in the future I may add a second 780 Ti, so keep that in mind (and I'm aware I'll likely need a bigger PSU for that).[/QUOTE]

Marmac do you have a parts list you had for your build? Specifically, which Power Supply did you use? I've heard some people having cord length issues in that case.

I have the Corsair 750TX but I use a Silverstone 24 pin atx extension cable to keep things neat. What you will have a problem with is the front panel led connections for your hd and reset button. Mire had to use extension cables to get the right length to the board. Luckily he had fan extension cables. Without these extension cables my system would not even be able to turn on.

Parts list:
i5 4670K @ 4.2 GHZ
Radeon R9 280X
8 GB Corsair 1600 MHz
MSI Gaming G45 Z87
120 GB Kingston SSD
Corsair H100i water cooling
Corsair 540 Air casing
2 x 320 GB HDD Raid

I hate the initial process of scratch building (case selection/planning, motherboard mounting, fan placement), but am otherwise fine with with DIY builds.

Are bare bones kits still a viable way to building up a gaming rig or do I really need to break down and buy a complete pre-built to avoid the hassle?

Bentley/Rolls Royce? lol

Lian Li and SilverStone are definitely a step above Corsair (most of them anyways).

I bought the Lian Li V2100 a very long time ago. That thing got hot. Very expensive, replaced it with a 750d.

As someone who hasn't built a computer since my current one (Core2Duo) I've got a few questions before Black Friday comes around.

First off what video cards should I be watching for in the mid range? I use dual monitors at 1920x1080 and want to be able to play the current gen games (D3, FC3, Bioshock etc) but I'm not concerned with max fps and ultra settings.

Secondly is 8GB RAM still plenty for pretty much everything or are there compelling reasons to bump it up to 16GB now and in addition is there any reason to wait for DDR4?

Lastly having never used an SSD before how much of a difference is there between the low / mid range $80-90 ones and the $140-160, any key models to watch out for? Also is 128GB pretty standard nowadays for system + couple games and apps?

Thistest has a line up of current cards. Pricing at bottom of first linked page. Pick a price, then pick your card. I don't have a new AMD card, but my GTX 660 has been rock solid for a year and only cost $170...a pretty easy buy.

8 GB ram will be plenty.

SSD - Samsung 840 Pro for top end...LOTS of FAST in there. Samsung 840 Evo isn't bad. The Evo isn't as fast as the Pro, but it will still blow your doors completely into orbit. $149 vs $100 for 120GBish models. 128 GB is fine if you have a WD Blue platter drive to hang your games on. Get the WD BlueWD10EZEXmodel...newest and lots faster than the other blue models. I just did a fresh install of W7 on my 128GB SSD and I have 85GB free after all my apps and files. I'm not much of a digital packrat, and all my games go on a platter drive.

Intel i5-4670k for the CPU.
