I'm pretty sure you can bifurcate and be fine, but I'm not actually sure how many lanes intel chips have these days. I'm like 99% sure you could with Ryzen
AMD B series chipsets have limited lanes. Plug in 2 M2's and you are limited to 2 SATA. The X chipset has no such limitation. I've got M2's sticking out of everything and still have all my SATA ports.

Intel just sucks unless you are doing a basic build.

This is why i dont buy intel - Just move them and get it settled - too much BS involved.

Now that I've unscrewed every M.2 heatsink, the design kind of makes sense. They just don't tell you anywhere what the design actually is.

If I had started unscrewing the bottom M.2 heatsinks rather than the top, it would've been obvious.

Everything's working now tho. Skrrrrt!

Not true with all b-series boards. You do often lose SATA or PCIe lanes from the video card, but you don't always have to give up a ton. Board I bought you have to give up 2 SATA ports for the 2nd M.2 slot, but it still leaves you with 4 SATA ports, plus the 2 M.2s. I have no fucking idea why you'd need 2 m.2 slots AND 6+ SATA ports. At that point, it's like...buy larger drives?

Also why you need 2 M2 drives? I have 1 for OS and then rest are SATA. You get the most bang for your buck with OS being on M2, SATA is where I store my game install for the better load times. Other than that I cant see having 2 M2 drives having any benefits. Am I wrong here?

One for the OS/apps, one for the rest of the stuff.

Platter drives are noisy and slow. Only good for the weekly big backup.

My new HTPC has nothing in the case except what is on the motherboard and PSU and a few fans. Quiet. Tidy.

Im not talking platter drives although I do have a 2TB one for storage and backups. Shit like pictures and other crap. Im talking SATA SSD, Like the Samsung EVO I have 1tb, its cheaper than M2, and only slightly less speed and bandwidth, nothing you will notice in RL.

My M2 is 5x faster than a SATA SSD. I notice this.

Only time you will notice difference is with huge video files and shit like that, transferring that is, not playback, so what is that 5x really good for? Even in booting up the PC you will not see a difference thats even noticeable, like 1/2 second more?

0.6 seconds faster boot time? 0.3 faster image/spreadsheet/VS project load time? Same game load times?


NVMe speeds are only way faster for sequential workloads, so things dealing with large contiguous files, like video editing.

However, for random IO, NVMe is barely faster. 99% of a normal user's workload is going to fall into this category. If you're just using this as a gaming machine, you aren't going to notice a difference.

I dont even use anything but m.2 anymore. The only platter drives in the house are on NAS now. I only ever have like 2-4 games installed at a time so no need for large platter drive. All the porn i download is shoved off to my NAS like any self respecting adult on the internet. Generally speaking 2TB of NVME serves me quite well but i usually end up with 1.5 as i put Origin and Steam in separate NVME drives from each other and the OS.

Also less wires make clean builds, also same reason why i go the route of unifan or bust now too.

I don't need YOU of all people to tell me the difference between drive technologies. I know what I use them for, you do not.

Now, run along and buy another shitty computer that will blow up in a few days or go buy a giant outdated 1080P screen or something.

Man 1440p monitors are like $50-70 more than you bought that 1080p for. Seriously take that shit back work one hour of OT and get a 1440p. You should’ve been on that 10 years ago, massive upgrade to 1080p.

Nahh I like my 1080p and my frames and my big 32" for my bad eyes.

Edit: Its not really about moneys. But it is a low priority thing for me.
