There is very little to no point in buying ram faster than 1600. I'm sure others will critique more but that is a pretty solid starting build.

Ram speed is no longer tied to overclocking on Haswell. That said go nuts if you want, there is some benefit but not much for the kind of platform you're building. Lower RAM timings would be of higher benefit like a nice cas 8 kit.. something in the trident series.

Yeah looks like a solid build. Could save a few $$ getting cheaper 1600 ram, but other than that, solid, bro.

The 1600 ram was the exact same price on the Part Picker, which is why I asked. I limited it on places to purchase, so it is possible somewhere else has it cheaper, but between Amazon and Newegg, which both give me free 2-day shipping, they were the same price.

Thanks for checking it over, appreciate you all taking the time. Now to just pull the trigger!

Was talking to my brother tonight and he's been having to convert (?) a lot of footage from a RED camera lately for editing and whatever film people do . anyways he was thinking about getting a PC to do it on rather than his Mac for upgrade-ability and total cost of ownership I guess. Anyways, I am up to snuff on gaming components but not sure what to recommend in the $1k range (if the price/ performance break point is in that area as well) for only video work.

Good ram with low timings is going to make your rig up to like 4-5% faster, and it might cost you anywhere from $8-20 dollars more. At that rate it might just be some of the best cost/performance you can spend.

The best i7 you can afford, even the six core if not out of your price range, with a couple of 250 gig ssds or bigger if you can afford it. Then use on board graphics or get a cheap 7850 or even 7750 gfx card, lots of ram, I would recommend 16+ gigs, even 32 gigs if you can swing it. Solid 500W power supply, $130 mo-bo....

You can get a better mo-bo if you want also scrimp on one of the ssds and add one more later...etc.. But its a good start.

Preliminary post before I leave work. I have an SSD, regular HD, and Win 8.1 already. Any critiques would be greatly appreciated.

Went ahead and bought all of this tonight, even the memory, since it is only $8 more than that 1333 mkopec listed in the build above mine. If it doesn't make a difference, I am sure I won't miss the $8.

I also went crazy and bought 3 more 140mm fans to completely max out that Corsair case. My computer room gets insanely hot during the summer; actually, my entire apartment does because it is west facing (hoping to move at some point this year though), and if I put the AC below 80 it just runs endlessly, so keeping things cool is a big deal to me. From watching the helpful Newegg video on it, it seems I can put two more in the top and one in the bottom next to the power supply, so why the fuck not? If it allows me to keep everything at the lowest fan speed too, that's a bonus.

I know it sounds nerdy, but after watching the video showing that case, I'm actually more stoked about getting that than the rest of the components! It looks awesome for cable management, fans, HDD placement, everything. Unfortunately, that's the only one that wouldn't ship 2-day, so I could be waiting a week or more for the most important part

EDIT: Holy shit, I just realized I got a micro-atx mb...I guess there is nothing wrong with that as long as it has everything I need on it, but why the fuck did I do that? I almost have to think I clicked the wrong one somewhere, because that doesn't look like what I remember reading. Dammit. Not sure I want to deal with a return at this point either. Kind of thinking it just cost a few extra bucks more than anything else.

Anyone see a reason why it wouldn't be fine?

There should be no reason it does not work except bundlng the shit closer together, right, so it defeats the purpose you getting a larger case to spread those components out some. Cant you just cncel it and reorder? Call someone?

Yeah it should work but I would suggest ordering a normal ATX board and returning the other one.

Just got off the phone with them (Newegg). It was part of a larger order that had already been pulled and prepared for shipment, so I would have had to cancel the entire order, so I just had them generate an RMA for the item which I'll handle when it gets here. At least I can order another one now and not worry too much, just sucks that I didn't notice that earlier. Totally my fault, I thought I checked everything over, but obviously I didn't pay close enough attention. I'm glad I noticed before opening it at least, because then there would be a restock fee, and the reviews on that board don't really leave me feeling too good about it. I had to have misclicked somewhere, because I always read the reviews, and those weren't what I read. Let this be a lesson to all, don't be an idiot!

Its Newegg, there's no way its shipped yet. Call and switch your order. Here's a pretty nice ASRock board to replace it; its really good for the price:Newegg.com - ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gbs USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Micro-atx boards are cool and all, but they're best as specialized builds in a micro-atx case such as the Corsair 350D. Speaking of, Corsair makes fantastic cases so good choice

Read some other reviews on that board, and I like it. I agree it is a helluva board for that price. Went ahead and bought it. And it is $10 cheaper than what I was spending on the micro board! Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm no help, I've only ever dealt with water cooling a CPU, I've never even looked into GPU water cooling.

I guess my general feeling is, why spend hundreds of dollars on water cooling a GPU when the added performance would be greater by just spending that money on a better card/additional card to begin with. Now, being that you are dealing with a 290x, you obviously can't go up to a higher card on the AMD side, and 1 more card is going to be another $900+, so surely you can get a water cooling solution for cheaper than that, so it might actually make sense in your case. You are the .01%, lol.

Yeah no clue about that. Might as well go to overclockers.com or something and ask there. The only thng i dealt with watercooling is my little brothers rig when he bought one the self contained Corsair units I installed for him. But it sounds like what you are looking for is something you put together and build yourself since im sure that there is no "kit" to satisfy.

A lot of people go watercooling for their video card to silence it. It's either that orARCTIC Switzerland. I have the 2 fan version on my 6970 and I can't imagine using anything else on my next video card.

True, with a watercooled CPU, my rig is almost totally silent when I'm idling, I only get noise when I'm gaming and my video cards get going.

Not to harp on it, but since I never got an answer and my post is buried several pages back now.

Any recommendations on water-cooling kits or parts brands? I'd appreciate just a direction to look(X,Y,Z brands are good).

I'd need one to cool at least 2 290X.

Thanks for the help.
I'm partial toekproducts. Make sure you search for your particular card make / model when buying your blocks. Are you going to include your CPU in your loop? I've found it helpful to go to the case thread onoverclockand find out how people are setting up their loop/rads.
