Did I close this tab before posting? God dammit.

So I joined a rerolled VOG while basically blind because I never got around to researching it. Sorry. Something something don't do new atheon with too many 26/27's and noobs because rng can fuck you. Our main issue slowing us down seemed to be portal team having to jack it while outside team finished off the exploding shits that planted their asses on the portal exit. Is the # of Harpy waves affected by how fast the portal team finishes oracles, or is it just a matter of burning them quickly? There was probably better positioning we could have been using to get to them faster on spawn. And then of course there were bugs (2 people teleported! one person can't exit! Relic AOE does 0 damage!) Plus noobs like me who didn't get many reps early on in mars/venus, so it took a while to learn oracle locations and such because I didn't get to see it very often (I kept missing that the first one spawns over your head at the start - I could hear it but was all wtf) Or having the other two people run off so I get relic duty for the first time and die to the Minotaur. (didn't expect to have to bomb him multiple times while nearly being one shot - apparently the trick is to try to jump over and behind him and not right on him, plus the other two players should toss their nades)

Also, what the fuck at the invisible hole in the ledge after the jump puzzle? That damn thing... If I jumped straight over it I would spring off to the left like a fucking Titanfall wall-jump or hit my head on the ceiling and bounce right down into the "hole" that isn't there. I want to practice but I guess the ideal method is to jump out into space and then turn and glide back in? That hidden hole is some Dark Souls 1 style cheese right there. (I made the Mega Man jump on the first try because someone mentioned saving gas to not splatter at the bottom) I blame jumping mechanics - why the fuck do you bounce off walls if you jump while near one?

Anyway it was fun, and I learned enough that strat guides make sense and let me pick up on things I missed. Like I didn't know the time buff gave you fast cooldowns, which can help clear out harpies.

My main frustration now is - you really can't "catch up" in leveling. You do your daily xp stuff, and then everything else gives you jack shit. I'm only halfway through Sunsinger and my VoC will be super helpful when I reach bonus oracle damage - in about another 10 days of bounties/dailies. There doesn't really seem to be any useful way of speeding it up as nothing else gives shit for xp and would be a total poopsock fest. Crucible bounties are a real slog, but I might try to do more of them since WOD is so close. I just want to reach the point where I'm capable in VOG normal / nightfall. Don't really care about hard mode because WOD will be out before I can possibly reach 30 + have appropriate weapons.

Speaking of, REALLY need nightfall and I should really have begged my way into one on Tues. I'll be home after 3 est.

<- at work, sick enough to feel like shit and to guzzle coffee but not sick enough to justify leaving.

Yeah, I always assumed this was the intended way to use the relic... shield your fireteam from enemy fire while still being able to damage your enemies for a (very) limited amount of time.

I believe this behavior is exactly why many people prefer to go to that middle platform while Time's Vengeance is active. That's the strategy that was used in my first normal-mode PUG Atheon kill, but I personally prefer to stay off to the side where I can take cover and snipe for precision damage. That way I don't need to worry about the relic bubble suddenly falling, resulting in several fireteam members suddenly getting simultaneously one-shotted. I also think it is possible to be killed by splash damage through the relic bubble -- in my specific case, I believe it was because there was a titan bubble right behind us that was being hit by Atheon and causing the splash damage.

Kruegen, you and TidusCEO did awesome considering it was your first raid. I had a blast and it does get easier once you run it a couple of times and know ahead of times whats about to happen and the best spots on the map to do damage and not take damage. That was my 3rd time through and I felt way more comfortable then the first couple of time. So you will be a pro at it in no time. Did seem to be a lot of bugs last night. The no damage AoE with the relic shield really sucked.

For those that did the VoG raid last night up to Atheon I would love to have another attempt at him and finish him off.

I also need to run the Nightfall and Weekly strikes as well so maybe if folks want to do that tonight I am down for that. Kreugen, you are on my friends list now so I will send you a message when I get home from work tonight. Should be around 5:30pm est.

Kreugen: I have the weekly/nightfall bounty on my warlock, so I can help you out when I get home from work later this afternoon (if you haven't completed it by then).

re: VOG, like you said actually going through the motions helps piece together what you can read from the VOG guides that are available. Getting exposed to the mechanics like where the Oracles spawn in the Atheon portal rooms really helps, especially once you get Atheon's Epilogue and can basically just keep walking forward mowing down Oracles without delay. By far the most painful points in VOG are the random bugs that can cause cascading/unrecoverable failures through no fault of your own, and it sounds like you've definitely seen your share of that already.

For the Supplicants, my strategy when I'm on the outside team is to watch the right portal (Venus) first as that's where the first batch will go. If you get through them fairly quickly, you can often have a moment to rest before the next batch gets past the left portal (Mars). I've had pretty good success with using Ice Breaker precision shots to take out the Supplicants quickly when they are on the portal opposite from my position, then switching to primary to take out the next batch while letting IB ammo regen, then rinse and repeat. I also had the luxury of practicing that role several times before the random teleport patch went live, so I was able to get pretty good at triggering them to self-destruct by approaching them and jumping away to safety before they exploded. Basically, they start to glow yellow similar to when the Sunsinger Singe (?) melee attack is active on a mob, so once you see that it's time to leap away.

re: leveling, at this point you can hope to get raid armor drops from VOG to get light+30 items and the shards you'll need to upgrade them. You'll be surprised how quickly the shards will pile up, but have to cross your fingers and hope for good luck with the armor drops. Hopefully Xur has good exotics tomorrow and you have enough strange coins and/or motes of light to get one of those slots upgraded. For leveling up your weapons, doing daily bounties and the daily heroic mission are your best bet there. Early on, you can always use a better weapon for the bulk of the mission and switch to the new weapon right before the mission ends to get the +xp bonus for completing. I think I was able to get my Epilogue fully upgraded in about a week doing this, but I also got mine before the AR nerf when it was still somewhat decent to use in normal PVE, so I did get some extra xp from that...

doing pvp, patrol missions, bounties, and public events are a great way to level items. i can usually level any item to full within ~10 hours of mixing up those things. the public event where you defend a warsat or fight two sides (hive vs fallen) is great for XP since you basically get infinite waves of yellow elites, shooting rockets up at the ship will spawn em super fast.

also tons of ways to cheese XP. the story where "we've woken the hive!" which people use to get the fusion rifle bounty is great, infinite spawn waves (dont kill knight) in hard mode, just sit there killing shit without moving and die to respawn. if you have a gatekeeper checkpoint its also great, infinite vex waves including a bunch of elite hobgoblins.

when i'm doing non hard shit (patrols PVP PEs daily story etc) i swap my gear around to level up stuff, instead of using max leveled stuff. you never know what weapon you'll need. i don't actually upgrade anything, just level em all up so i can swap around if needed.

For those that are interested, that link I posted for the new Atheon cheese has some really interesting lore in the reddit comments. Specifics about the history of the vault and the relic shield. As it turns out, there actually is a story in Destiny!

edit:Sorry, the lore information is inthis thread, not the cheese thread.

This was the part I would like to improve on the most. I couldn't quite kill the supplicants fast enough or in an efficient enough way to make things run smoothly. Damn they move pretty fooking fast once they get going. Thanks for the hints Sarthis, I will have to try this out next time.

My first exotic drop!

A hunter chest. Sigh.

Thanks anyway sarthis, heh. Shit will be a lot easier when I get self res. Luckily I knew another spot to squat when the mino up top proved too much to handle.

Oh, I reached the stability upgrade on the VOC.. gun is absurd now.

After seeing the DLC release and interviews about it. This game has no future. I really enjoy it but wow they have bungled the opportunity to create an awesome universe. With the wealth of awesome games on the horizon I see this game dieing in about 6 months. Huge opportunity missed. Great mechanics and gameplay terrible story and amount of content.

Regarding leveling weapons etc..

Most of us who got to 30 quickly was because we were running 2-3 characters of the sames class. This lets you do the dailies, bounties, etc three times a day, raid, nightfall heroic 3 times a week. You can switch armor and weapons between your characters, so you just need to level an alt to 20 and give him the gear and you can do everything twice a week. Shards, energies, EXP, exotics (form nightfall's and strange coins x3) add up super quick. Your second warlock can also start as sunsinger at level 1. Shouldn't take more than 9-10 hours to get a second character to same level as your current one.

Xur is selling time and patience today, I'm considering getting it even though I already have icebreaker. Anyone have it already?

edit: not only does he have the same titan chest again, but it has more discipline than last week....again.

If you wear the Jackolyte mask (item you got for Halloween) when you talk to Xur, you will be able to purchase Flight of Shadows consumable that changes the appearance of your respawn for 24 hours. Consumable costs 1 strange coin and will create swirling bats around you every time you spawn (after dying for example).

Its a arc sniper gun, cloaks you when you aim or whatever. Grab it if you need a arc damage rifle! I've been using The Chosen for arc and dislike it so xur was only half a bag of shit today for me.
