Let's all be honest, none of us really know why exactly for one reason or another D2 was so great. I couldn't sit here and armchair dev a bunch of reasons why it was so good. I just know that it was fun. The devs here focused way too much on WoW-ifying this game rather than giving us a unique experience. I will say I enjoyed the game up until Act2 inferno, they made a fun and engaging game that looked good and played great. It was when you approached end-game that the game really showed how shitty it was.

I'm sure I'll get negged for this but for what it is, Diablo 3 is pretty entertaining. There's not many other games that I can log on for 15 minutes and do a run with my friends. Could it have been better? Absolutely, but I've more than made back the price of the game thanks to the rmah and have gotten hours of entertainment.

D2, for me at least, was addicting but frustrating. The fun came from the slot machine reward from pulling the lever and tweaking my gear to min/max my lever pulls per hour so that I could tweak my gear more so that etc... This all came crashing down in 1.11 when runewords became the single institutional goal for my fun equation and I stopped playing. A lot of other things along the way like targetting inconsistencies, skill points, redoing your character every patch and how terribly boring it was to level from 1 to getting Whirlwind/Frozen Orb/etc... because spending points before that was a mistake, made the game very tedious in the parts between the killing stuff.

D3 looks and feels way better to play than D2, has a better leveling experience and has way more ways to make a bloody smear out of your enemies. I never got much satisfaction out of the act of killing most stuff in D2, but I do in D3 (aside: IMO, D1 did this better than D2 as well). It feels fantastic to butcher even the most common and simplest of enemies when their skull breaks off and goes flying by your PoV.

D3's tweaking of the min/max at first was about as bland as it can get. The first legendary revamp combined with MP settings changed this a fair bit and now I have to balance the circular equation of increasing damage out, decreasing damage in and optimizing hp gain with the fact that some slots are very good at two of those, but never at the same time. But it's still nowhere near as interesting of an equation as it was in D2. All defensive stats work in a similar manner and multiply each other. All offensive stats work in a similar manner and multiply each other. There's no trading an item with very high poison resist and physical damage reduction for something with high cold resist and increased block chance because that shores up your weaknesses better while maintaining similar offensive capabilities. D3 doesn't have those complexities in the end-game. It removed all the complexities of the early game (which I'm glad it did) but also removed them from the end-game where the only reason to stay there is to keep tweaking the interactions of those systems (drops and character enhancement). Add in the AH to the simple "hero score" (I'm using this as the term for the tweaking equation) and the process of improving that score loses most of its interest. Further combined with the lack of randomization in environments (events are awesome though, now that they made them worthwhile, and I'd like to see more reasons to venture into different places) and the end-game becomes even more linear.

I think I could liken it to the meta-game of BW or SC2: Everyone keeps trying to find the new, better way to do something. It happens over the course of years and yet what's optimal or best (not as in a single strategy, but in terms of scouting, reaction, how to read your opponent's choices, when and how to react to them or exploiting weaknesses, etc...) continues to change bit by bit. That's what D2 had, and it's what D3 doesn't. The equation has been solved, and the solution is widely known because there were too few variables.

For 15 mins of quick fun, I prefer Realm of the Mad God. However, I get what you are saying. If you have <1 hour, you can do a decent D3 run, pick up some drops, move paragon along, maybe get an infernal machine piece, etc.

I've played as much d3 as I have because its something you can pause in the middle of and it doesn't take anything away. I watch a good amount of sc2 and there is lots of downtime between matches/ in the first few minutes of matches and a game like d3 is perfect to fill that void.

D3 is the perfect game to play while watching streams. I play it while watching MTG streams all the time. It's because the game is shit and doesn't really require paying any attention.

It seems the entirety of western civilization has gotten so busy that all of their entertainment, from movies to music to games, has to be consumed as quickly as possible and in happy meal-sized chunks. Were the people in the 80s and 90s that much less busy that they could actually enjoy cerebral entertainment? Is checking Facebook every 30mins really so necessary that we can't have a fucking decent dungeon crawl in a game or plot in a movie anymore?

Yeah, because it's always my dedication to "checking facebook" that always draws me away. Certainly not two children under the age of three, or a job that's even more demanding than when I was in my early twenties.

Or it could be because I have a child now and work close to 60 hours a week and has nothing to do with what you said. Give up on the utopia man.

I'd recommend replacing bash with Overpower with either Crit rune or 35% damage reflect rune, OR Rend with the lifesteal rune. Since you have a fury generating shout anyway you should never need an actual fury generator, just run like the wind and whirlwind all day e'ry day.

Edit: I don't really know gear that well for barbs, but here's my barb alt for reference. I think you have better gear than he does and I can do mp9/10 CotA or Keep2 runs, or actually farm on mp6 or so.http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/I...3/hero/3965499

Edit 2: Since you have lowish LoH and only 3% LS, I definitely recommend that rend: lifesteal rune at a minimum. You might actually be better off running bloodthirsty passive instead of tough as nails as well. You also are probably better off with some crappy duel wield weapons over that boulder breaker if you're doing WW barb since you have no IAS from rings/ammy/etc. Your tornadoes are probably just not doing the damage they could be. The whole breakpoint thing for nadoes is a cryptic art to me though so I may be wrong.
