Diablo 2 is still peak, D3 had Tranbo Diablo, and D4 didn’t even have Diablo in it.
I really really would love to see all 3 of Blizzards IPs deliver their magnum opus of games and provide us all another decade or two of the best but unless they rehire all the Blizzard North people I cannot have any faith in anything they make here.
Deep down I wish to be proven wrong but given this is so far off anyways it sounds like desperation rather than anything to care about.

ES6 vibes. This won’t take 8+ years and counting to come out, but what is the point of announcing a game 3 years before target release? Everyone knows another Diablo would eventually be made. Just keep it quiet until you are 6 months to a year from release tops.

Then they kinda did the same thing with the expansions.

I don't trust Blizzard enough these days to have any excitement for anything they have coming. If this comes out and people say it is awesome I will try it, but will not be a day 1 buy. I actually enjoyed Diablo 3 for what it was, D4 the combat didn't even feel good.
I am way more inclined to support some new content for d2 than any new game they make honestly.

IIRC, and who knows, maybe I am remembering this incorrectly, part of the (main) reason they can't add storage is the game is architected so when you pass someone in town (which is designed in the original game with Merchants etc far apart so that you have to walk LONG DISTANCES deliberately so PLAYERS CAN SEE YOUR PURCHASED SWAG) every passing player scans your entire INVENTORY AND VAULT. EVERY TIME.
It got better but its still CF'ed at the basic design level.
I would bet they can't fix it, so they are starting fresh with a new design.
Moment to moment gameplay is smooth and great; Blizzard still has the best network code in the bizz but they have been living off of that for 30 years.
The balance teams are terrible, the classes can't keep a good spec for more than a single balance pass, the classes are seemingly at constant odds, other than season 13 its been a disaster to me personally for a long time.
Every one of the late to video game DEI activist hires and Blizzard GAAS Middle managers need to fired.

They fixed that a while ago.
I think what they mean by "engine" is the combat system they copied from D3 and fucked around with so much they broke it. It has become so much of a kludge that the only fix is to scrap it and start over. Not a bad idea at all.

Because the Blizzard business model is to live and survive off the hype of the game rather than the games themselves. You need to have a long lead in to new games so the players will feel invested in its success, like they lost something if its not very good and will convince themselves its a good and enjoyable game to avoid that feeling.
