Up until the Blockbusters took over and put everyone else out of business. We had something called Palmer Video. It was pretty cool and they didn't screw you over on rentals. Course they didn't have the old b horror movies or pornos. But that's what the mom n pops were there for.
Vulcan Video, a 35-year-old video store, the last vestige of the era, closed in April. Though they had been borderline for many, many years. Leaning into a gofundme for donations, but alas...

The last Blockbuster in Oz closed in March 2019. My local closed much earlier, Nov 2016. /sniff

Found this old article, apparently the last one in the world was/is in Bend, Oregon? Wonder if that one is still hanging on. (lol at the old sidebar article re toilet paper)

The thing that kept the mom and pop video rental places around was porn from the back room. Pre-internet popularity renting porn cassettes was a gold mine for the non-blockbusters.

I remember going to Block Buster to rent some shit and they had a Netflix sales person with a small booth setup inside. They were promoting their disc by mail system. I forget if they mentioned the streaming back then.

Companies that advertise their eventual replacements are stupid. It's a lot like when standard FM radio always did commercials for XM.

XM radio is crap with shit tier audio quality. The thing that’s hurt FM radio is streaming music and podcasts.

The image quality on Disney+ is incredible. I got my Shield TV Pro hooked up to my new TV and I watched Wall-E and was basically in tears at how amazing it looked. HDR, pixel perfect.

I wish Disney+ didn't run like shit on PS4. Still have issues where screen freezes but audio continues or it says I was disconnected because of my internet even if it didn't go off.

Shout out to a fellow Shield Pro user! At least you put some of that overtime money to good use.

I'm not sure I could function without mine anymore, after having it/them for several years now. Netflix 4k looks pretty fucking good too now, and the Dolby Atmos sound...<Antonio Banderas bite thumb.gif>

Mulan is available this friday for $30 on top of your D+ sub (lol) or just wait an extra 3 months and it'll be on Disney+ without any extra price tag

or just pirate it

also Mandalorian season 2 begins Oct 30th

It’s the first major studio release for a big AAA title straight to VOD. Buy that shit so we get more and the theaters can die a quick death, or at least become niche for people that enjoy the experience. For $30 I can make my own popcorn and not have to listen to assholes talking during the film, I’ll take it.

Mulan will be interesting, considering the budget is supposedly around 200M for it and it will be exclusive on D+. Bill & Ted 3 was much less of a risk because the budget was around 25M, so I suspect they'll stand a good chance of breaking even. Non-Box Office numbers have been missing, but it is ranking high on rental/purchase metrics for the various sites it is available through.

Today the Mulan experiment begins. I'm torn on this, I wish this was Black Widow instead of Mulan.

I rarely go to the movie anymore, and the only reason I go is because I don't want to wait 3-6 months to see the movie. I don't really go for the "theater" experience anymore.

50"+ 4K TVs are have such great picture quality, and with a good sound system, you get a pretty good experience. It's not the theater obviously, but it has become for me...good enough. The upside of being home, noone talking, no waiting in line, no sticky floor, cheaper food and drinks outweighs the benefit of the larger screen in my case. Consider that I buy every movie I bother to go see in the theater, $30 to own(as long I subscribe to Disney+) is actually a better deal than theater+buying afterwards. :)

So I want this to succeed. It's just not a movie I would have gone to see in the theater though even though it's something I 100% was going to see at some point. If this was Black Widow or any Marvel movies, I would not even think about it and pay for it. Right now I am not entirely sure, but most likely will just to support the concept and hope it's viable and more movies are release this way.

In any case, it's an interesting experiment and I'm curious to see what the outcome will be for the future of movies and theater. All the money goes to Disney so they don't need this to make the same amount it would in theater for them to make the same profit.

I think rooting for theaters to die is actually going to be a big mistake if it ever actually happens.

If there is no premium theater market then "new AAA releases" will start to not stand out anymore and your AAA media will cease to exist. They will get lost in the Amazon, Netflix, Hulu world of mass content creation.

I'll probably just wait till December because I doubt my kids will actually sit through it right now anyway and it will be a sad day if the "theater experience" disappears.

30 bucks is to much on top of a pay service in my opinion.

I feel this could be bad news depending how successful it is. It can very well make multi-tiered pricing more mainstream in services like Netflix/Prime/Disney+ . "Oh the new popular Netflix series is coming out, but not for your normal subscription, you need Netflix Premier for that one. New season of Mandalorian, special EARLY ACCESS for Premiere members."

Shit is probably inevitable either way, they will always find a way to milk more money out of people.

I am going to watch this because I have a daughter that really wants to see this. Yes it is above and beyond the service itself but I pay 4 a month for it. Many forms of entertainment add above a monthly fee(/Wave Blizzard).

I would not mind either way on theaters. If they go out, then I can watch from home. If they stay, then I can go occasionally for movies like Dune. I do not like wishing ill to any business because losing an industry is a lot of jobs lost which effects a lot of families. I do think that at this point the entertainment(Movies,Sports, theme parks) industry as a whole needs a bit of a reset. The amount of money involved at the top is getting ridiculous.

I know this is going to be semantics but I'm not rooting for theater to die, I'm rooting for this to succeed because I would prefer to watch movies on Day 1 in the comfort of my own home rather the being either forced to go to the theater to see it on Day 1 or wait 3-6 months to watch it at home.

I don't have any hate toward the theater industry or anything like that. I just don't enjoy the experience much anymore and prefer to stay home. In a perfect world this succeed and I can watch movies at home, and theater stay alive for those who enjoy it. Sadly I think it's going to be one or the other. The compromise would probably be something like a 2 week window for theaters, most movies make the majority of their revenues in the first 2 weeks anyways...and if I only had to wait 2 weeks to see it at home, I'd probably be happy to do so.

I have a Mulan remux playing in the background right now. There's something about the presentation of it that is quite jarring to me. I think it may be the costumes - they seem kind of plastic and cheap. It's really hard for me "buy into" what the movie is showing and see it as more than actors playing a part.
