I don't think it's really the duty of the tournament organizers to ensure that teams have reasonable salaries. Their job is to provide airfare, accommodations and a comfortable play area, while competently broadcasting the event. All these teams have managers (and some even coaches), it's on them to ensure their players have appropriate salaries and enough to comfortably live. I know it definitely doesn't work like that in terms of team salaries, but that's no one's fault except the players/teams. Why should we feel pity for them and redistribute prize pools?
In most sports teams/players get a share of the broadcast rights, sponsorships, etc. If you want to grow esports and have a competitive field then the prize pool needs to be spread around. The TI4 prize pool is big enough that first place doesn't need to be a lions share in order for the price to be pretty significant.

A majority of people seem to agree that each of the 16 teams in ti4 should get some small fraction of the prize pool. Even 0.5% of a $6,500,000 pool is $32,500, more than teams get for first place in almost every other tournament. Just make 9th-16th get 0.5% each and take the 4% evenly from the other teams. The top teams will still be getting much more than they would be getting for the same position last year.

Sounds like it'd be pretty simple to have a vote as part of the compendium with how the fans would like to distribute the funds. Just have us vote on a few different prize schemes and call it done.

But yeah, it'd be nice if 9-16th spot gets a prize.

From a business point of view for Valve, the main purpose of the prize pool is to support the competitive scene and get media attention. The prize pool will already get media attention, and supporting the competitive scene means paying more teams enough money to keep them playing.

Something like this? (Based on 8m pool)
Pos % USD
1 30% 2400000
2 16% 1280000
3 10% 800000
4 8% 640000
5 6% 480000
6 6% 480000
7 4% 320000
8 4% 320000

Definitely should, especially since a lot of the 9-16th are gonna be teams that actually had to play through the qualifiers to get there(but aren't really at world level, like MVP). I think they should be rewarded for at least getting there. Bunch others are invited by default so don't know but still feel every team should get something. Getting to 8th at TI is by no means an easy feat, it's actually quite fucking hard considering the competition. It's not like they can't actually give some money to everyone and not have enough for the top 3, they have so much fucking money to begin with this time around. Shit if anything, they should put some money themselves from the 3/4 of the compendium money they're getting, instead of taking it from the 1/4 that's added to the prize pool. Hell that'd be pretty good publicity for them.

I don't think 160k is right though, sounds like too much for just participating especially with free invites and shit. 100k, roll the rest of the money into first place. Ultimately I think they'll want first place to be higher than every other game or some shit, so they'll balance around that. Even 50k to 9-16 would be a decent amount(maybe 60 to account for their teams taking a 6th man amount).

Personally I would be very happy with your distribution Elerion, I don't think those values are horribly out of line at an 8m pool. Alliance only took home 1.6 last year, first place is still seeing 800,000 dollar increase in prize.

Ya if they could allocate a little more to the 9-16th place teams or at least cover their airfare/stay with the loads of added cash it would be a good thing.

If this news came out, I'd buy some more battle points too.

I'm not 100% but mostly sure that airfare, room and board are all already covered for any team attending.

As it should be. For a team from the Philippines, getting to Seattle and staying for the duration of TI would be prohibitively expensive. It would compromise the equality of the competition.

Should probably try to mirror other professional tournmanets rather than making up numbers which comes to an absurd value like 160,000.

They'll probably try to keep #1 at 3 million for publicity, so speculate from there.

This fantasy thing seems to basically be the worst implementation of all time. What games even count? Some players are going to be playing way more than others, so naturally they get more points. You can pick a bunch of top tier players but then a group of slavs who play in a lot of tournaments are going to outperform your stars, especially if they are chinese and play like 2 tournaments a year

Yeah, how silly of me!

The first column is Australian Open 2014 top 16 rescaled to 8m pool (from 7.2m), the second column is from my suggestion above
1: 2.9m 2.4m
2: 1.5m 1.3m
3-4: 600k 720k
5-8: 300k 400k
9-16: 150k 160k

Man, I was totally off the mark! I sure regret that absurd 160k claim!

Valve needs to bring in event sponsors and get some serious prize money cash rolling in. It is not too far-fetched to think that they could hit those prize pool numbers that Tennis and other major sports hit, when this community funded event has already raised ~$25 million.

This is how you make e-sports mainstream. Money talks.

Dedicated crowd funders doesn't necassiarily mean a huge corporation will see ROI if they throw millions in the pot.
