Ghost story feels bad because it is a major deviation from Dresdens power increase and character development. It is like he let us down and you feel as powerless as he is in ghost form. From a story point of view it is one giant cliffhanger and again just feels bad.

As the reader you know he's not dead so a lot of the tension doesn't exist. The challenges are more frustrating than compelling. Harry's struggling to do things and I just want things to move along. You're going to be alive at the end of the book so let's get it in gear. The initial release of the audiobook doesn't have James Marsters doing the reading further impairing the experience. The Star Trek themed mind battle with Molly I loathed.

I've only ever given it the one go. I'm somewhat curious how I'll feel about it a second time.

I enjoyed this series through Skin Game, but the two parter had too much Neil Gaiman creepiness in it. His second Aeronauts book had it as well.

Why can't authors keep their gross sexual fetishes out of books about wizards and elves?

Also, Harry has become a straight up villain and it's been more and more obvious for several books now. If there was a plan for him to meet his "evil twin" in mirror mirror and realize he was the villain it would salvage the character for me. Doubt that's the plan though.

Looking forward to this for sure. Been too long and really want to see the fall out from the big death in the last book. Which I am still kinda pissed about.

You need her to be "dead" so she can level up off screen. Her hanging around as a regular human given the increasing stakes doesn't work.

That's meta reasoning though. We'll set that aside for a moment. In universe Harry knows an archangel by name. He knows Odin. He met Hades. Even if she's gone forever from the story, which I do not believe, we've got multiple different afterlives confirmed as existing. Death just doesn't have the same weight. She's in Valhalla. You can probably swing a visit on occasion.

Pulling back again her death gives Harry his Persephone. Hades commented on their similarities when they met. Fierce hound, possession of a super vault/armory, etc. It looks to me like Harry is checking the boxes necessary to one day wear the mantle of Hades. Now he has a love torn between two worlds.

My personal guess, which is a longshot so give me appropriate odds, is that Murphy is still alive and in possession of Lash's coin. When she got shot Lash saw it as a great opportunity to fake Murphy's death and get her a bunch of exp off screen. We had that dream of Harry's where Murph manifests Lash's demon signs and I've been on board with Team Lashiel since the beginning so I'm biased. Laura Raithe shippers don't @ me.

Murphy is dead AF. She's a Valkyrie now. It's explained she can't return to earth until she's long forgotten and that not even Odin himself can change that. However I do wonder if Harry can. I can't imagine she's done in the series.

If she died in book two of the concluding trilogy than I'd think she was gone gone but doing it with an unknown number of books left I cannot believe it to be the case. She goes all the way back to the first with a great deal of character development and time on the page spent on her over the length of the series. Yeeting her out of the story now would just be wasteful.

edit - I trust Odin not at all. That might be Neil Gaiman's doing.

I'm three hours in to the audiobook and I am enjoying it but my desire to listen to Harry Dresden the World's Saddest Wizard is not without it's limits.

I haven't started yet but yeah the gap really makes it difficult to be emotionally involved. Does the audiobook come with a massive recap?

It's WoT/GoT fatigue. I honestly might skip these books until he is finished with the series. See ya back for discussion on TWENTY FUCKING YEARS.

Sentence one…jesus christ.

I'm not fatigued. Dresden is clinically depressed. We're inside his head so we get to hear all his self-loathing first hand. One character after another has a scene where they tell him he doesn't deserve what he's doing to himself. Given the author's battle with depression including a suicide attempt it gets a little uncomfortable. As far as the narrative goes the death of Susan by his own hand is larger than the death of Murphy but we're treating Murphy's death like it's too much for one man to come back from. I don't buy it.

When we're not focused on Harry's self-pity I'm having a good time.

edit - a third of the way in I still like this more than Ghost Story
