He's getting his shit together as it goes along but we're still a long way away from the wizard that battled one of the darkest horrors of faerie in the heart of Arctus Tor, bested it and shouted to all the monsters closing in "WHO'S NEXT"

Harry Dresden Has a Sad is just a big part of this book and we already did that with Susan across Changes, Ghost Story and Cold Days.

Minor spoiler regarding a soul gaze
They treating the soul gaze in this book like Lara never had one before, Carlos Ramirez did one on Lara within minutes of seeing her a few books back.

Finished it up.

It takes a turn in tone and structure back to the familiar once
Harry does the test ritual with Lara
and that turn is firmly cemented once
The Spice-Goyles appear.
From there on out it forms a very decent entry to the series. Rated against all the others I'd be willing to put it in the upper half. Harry does still get sad a couple more times but we're not wallowing in it.

A great deal of time would need to pass for me not to skip the first quarter or third on a revisit.

Just finished it: Will spoiler my thoughts but no real spoilers.
a lot was acknowledged, we learned more about the castle, but nothing really happened to progress any major plots. Sadly this book is mostly skippable and would have been a better novella.

Probably.

Although I really did not like Harry Dresden the World's Saddest Wizard the book did stay in my thoughts for a few days after finishing it. That's worth another point. There are plenty of books that I have read that have stirred not a single extra moment of additional reflection after completion so when one does it gets a little gold star next to it's name.

Don’t get mw wrong I am glad it exists but left me only wanting more.
