I'm three hours in to the audiobook and I am enjoying it but my desire to listen to Harry Dresden the World's Saddest Wizard is not without it's limits.

I just ordered it. I have read or listened to every novel and short story. I LOVE Harry Dresden.

He is an imperfect character/wizard in a world of big bads, he is pretty tame. But he has a heart of gold and he always feels like someone who "walks with you" literally rather than be "other worldly" like much of fantasy fiction.

I was very very sad when I read my last word of Dresden material. It was like running out of James SA Corey stuff.

Not many authors(s) can do that.

He is a brilliant narrator . And a GREAT vampire. I love him.
But he isn't Harry Dresden the way Dick Hill IS Jack Reacher!

You ever give Will Wight's Cradle series a try? Travis Baldree brings the audiobooks alive.

OU Ariakas OU Ariakas and they've even finished. Twelve books with a competent ending.

I'm listening to the last few chapters of battlegrounds now. Damn i forgot how good James Marsters is. Why doesn't he narrate the trashy LitRPG slop i love????
I like his narration, but Jeff Hayes really is another level. I have no problem relistening to the DCC books.

I honestly didn't like it.

Svartavles thing was stupid. Despite Justine being possessed Thomas still did so of his literal free will. He wasn't possessed. This just weakens the whole plotline of it.

Harry the PTSD wizard is absolutely lame and completely uninteresting. There was a better way to do this than making 3/4 of the book moping. Furthermore Murphy getting killed in a somewhat panicked accident is not even on the same planet as Harry plunging an obsidian dagger into the heart of his former girlfriend. So she could fuel and ancient blood ritual.

Will having barely 10 lines the entire book despite living with Harry was really strange. The new character Bear got far more of everything and she is just another of the Valkyries already introduced.

The book I thought we were going to get was going to be mostly about the wedding with Lara. Heroes and villains a plenty as all heck breaks loose during the ceremony with treachery and double crosses and double double crosses. Something fun and a little comic book-ish as our hero has to navigate complex and a little silly diplomatic kerfuffles with the supernatural community. Summer must be invited for it is an insult not to and how they demand to bake the wedding cake! Is this some sort of ruse? Lemongrass frosting!?! WINTER HATES LEMONGRASS.

It did not come to pass. What we got in the aftermath of the two book Battle of Chicago is Harry Dresden has PTSD and will spend a whole lot of the book with a case of the sads.

There's only two sections of Ghost Story that I like. One is when he's at his grave telling Leah the story of Justin and in doing so realizing that there's no way that two-bit punk was calling the shots. The other is at the very end where he stands up to Maab after an archangel balances the scales back out. "Lies. She cannot change who you are." This is right after Changes where a whole mess of bad shit happened and now he's back alive and was pretty sure fifteen seconds ago he was COMPLETELY fucked but he's still able to muster up -

"“I will be the Winter Knight,” I told her. “I will be the most terrifying Knight the Sidhe Courts have ever known. I will send your enemies down in defeat and make your power grow.” I smiled again. “But I do it my way. On my terms. When you give me the task, I’ll decide how it gets done—and you’ll stay out of the way and let me work. And that’s how it’s going to be.”
After a long silent moment, she said, “You dare give commands to me, mortal?”
“I can’t control you,” I said. “I know that. But I can control me. And I’ve just told you the only way you get what you want out of me.” I shrugged a little. “Up to you, my queen. But think about whether you want another thug to command or an ally to respect. Otherwise, you might as well start cutting on me right here, right now, and get yourself somebody with less backbone.”"

And then Cold Days, the book after, is pretty good. He's getting back in to fighting shape and gets the mission to kill the Winter Lady. How's he going to handle this one? Not by being sad that's how.

I enjoyed the book for what it was. Murphy was his soulmate in a way no one else ever was or will be, so her death was going to change him. That said, I hope that's not going to be a recurring theme, because there is a lot of shit Harry needs to get done.

I'm going to keep harping on it. It just doesn't work because of Susan. It was established that she was his true love. Their love shielded him from the White Court of Vampire on more than one occasion. She was the mother of his child and he opened her throat albeit at her request. That's some tragic shit. You don't get to then give Harry another true love and another tragic death and then make it ten times as traumatic and expect me to give a shit. Murphy died from a negligent discharge and went to viking heaven. How will our hero ever recover. Let's have the whole cast take turns giving him a pep talk.

I still liked it quite a bit once it got going but that first section is goddamn rough.

I had missed the release completely and picked it up a few days ago and finished it today thanks to the thread bump getting my attention (thanks for that!).

My thoughts with some spoilers:
After the events of Battle Ground there was a lot to clean up (Murph dying, how the world would react to what happened in Chicago, Thomas, etc) and I expected a bit of a let down as a result. As everyone has said, sad Dresden was terrible and unfortunately that's a sizeable chunk of the book. There's still a lot of good though and I genuinely love the world that's been built. Mab summoning Mother Winter on Demonreach was awesome and her line about always having a bigger gun is a great call back.

I'm glad that things are set up to move forward again and we won't have to deal with emo Thomas but ultimately I place it in the same tier as Fool Moon & Ghost Story at the bottom of the series. With that being said, Butcher needs to stop his side projects and focus on finishing this; 6 years between books is way too long.
