FAA to Require Most Drones to Be Registered and Marked - ABC News

The drones must be marked with the owner's unique registration number. The FAA said that would let authorities track down owners if they violate the rules. But registration also gives the agency a vehicle to educate owners just as thousands get drones as presents for Christmas and other holidays.

The requirement covers aircraft weighing from more than half pound up to 55 pounds, including any payload such as a camera. Drone owners who are 13 and older will have to register on an FAA website that becomes available starting Dec. 21. The FAA expects parents to register for younger children.

Registration will cost $5 and must be renewed every three years, but the fee will be waived for the first 30 days, until Jan. 20. Owners will have to mark aircraft with an identification number. Recreational fliers can register as many aircraft as they want on one registration number.

I haven't checked the news lately, has Fox compared ID tags on drones to being tattooed by Nazis yet?

sounds like a tax. if they dont want drones to fly above x height then they should be going after the manufacturer. the 5 miles from airport thing basically fucks people living in a major city right in the ass.

The last rc club I flew at was at an airport. You just looked out for planes landing or taking off. Interesting about the weight limit. They got that from the AMA, but you only needed AMA to fly at an AMA field and a lot did for insurance only of $1 million in coverage. You could fly heavier than that if you flew at say private property.

If my registration numbers get blown off by anti aircraft fire but the drone can still fly, is that legal?

Registration is a good idea, but it's completely retarded if the infrastructure isn't in place to manage it.
Registration should be tied to the flight controller, and allow the drone to be ID'd while in flight or the data logs.

actually its really stupid, because if you can register all your drones and all it takes is writing the registration number on the wing or whatever of the craft then anyone can just copy somebody else's reg number and add it to their drone to be legit. imagine some guy posting video or pics of his drone and that gets shared around, write that on your drone, do whatever you like with your drone. land it on a jumbo jet or some crazy shit and when they recover the drone, they know who to arrest. the poor schlub who posted his reg number online.

Sounds like a retarded Scorpion episode. Too bad the episode ends when they drive over to the guys house and he has the actual drone in his fucking house and not on a jumbo jet.

you missed the part where one reg number can be used on all the owner's drones, he can own a hundred drones all with the same reg number.

They said all enforcement falls to the local LEO, good luck with that. More feel good shit that the people who have been causing the problems will ignore.
