Just finished my re-read of the whole series (re-listen, first go was reading, this redo was trying out the audiobooks).
Series was even better on the second run IMO. Amazing stuff overall and I even ended up with a new appreciation for books 3 and 6 which were my least favorites prior.
The narrator is an amazing god tier talent. The fact he does EVERY voice still blows my mind. The funny thing is he does feminine female voices very well, it’s the gruff masculine female voices he has issues with. Each performance is better than the last, book 7 was crazy production values for an audiobook. He needs to be the sole voice actor for an animated series.
Looking forward to book 8, many interesting unresolved threads to investigate.

Not nearly as good imo. Maybe I'm just struggling reading at the moment, but it really just didn't catch me at all. I was never attached to any of the characters, and the whole book I just felt like I was waiting for something. It's not that it's a bad story, it just feels like a book that was trying to make a political statement and wrote a story around it.

Finally picked up the first book, almost through it. It's alright, kinda nice reference to movies, tv shows etc, although not nearly enough references to games and RPGs, which really is what the book is based on.
Is it really so that there's 8 books and they're still only on level 8 out of 15? God damn it.

skipped most of this thread to avoid spoilers but read enough to give the first book a shot. Surprised at how much I like this, honestly it's just what I needed after the last 10 years of horseshit that has zapped my joy of everything I used to love. I hope the TV series doesn't get ass raped into a puddle of shit. I'm looking at you, Ready Player One.

Since the series was announced, “Carl” fans have been debating whether the live-action format is the right move here. Dinniman understands the concern, but he makes the case for why he’s willing to give it a shot over animation (though MacFarlane is certainly no stranger to an animated show).
“It’s kind of funny. A lot of the more hardcore nerdy fans — I mean, like I am — will say, we want it animated. And then I think actually the majority of people who aren’t into animation are going to say, we want a live action,” Dinniman said. “If you actually poll people out on the street, it’s going to be a pretty high number of live action. But that’s really high risk, high reward, because we’re not going to do it if it’s gonna look like absolute shit. And they will do CGI testing on Princess Donut and stuff like that. And that’s all I can say, I think. It’s all gonna hinge on what it looks like. But Fuzzy Door, specifically, if you watch ‘Ted’ or ‘The Orville, ‘you’ll see that they know what they’re doing when it comes to this. So I would say, don’t knock it till you try it.”
