It made $18 millions domestic + $13 millions foreign in South East Asia, Hong Kong and China (a movie like Hunger Game made a bit above $3 millions in Thailand). Box Office Mojo does not have the budget of the film and even if it did it would require cost of living adjustments to have a sense of how it compares to american budgets. That said the film is there to be seen: production values are good, but it's not a special effect fest (mostly practical with a little ok CGI) and not many different sets are required, so it might have been somewhat cheap to produce. So probably on par with a bellow average american horror movie (something like House of Wax or The Ruins to quote the first two that came to mind).

It should be mentioned that it's based on a very popular folk tale, so as such there are number of thai movies on the same subject. I can't vouch for the quality of any of the others. I thought it was worth adding that because youTube is suggesting a video of a full pee mak movie, except it's another one!

I wish I could find torrents of 1/3 of the shit you post because anything is worth a shot, and a number of things have been enjoyable and stuff that otherwise I would never see. But so much of it being festival films and maybe more obscure (?) foreign releases makes it difficult to even judge.

I'll get back to you on that, because I have a friend who downloads a lot of off the beaten path movies. If crappy quality is not an issue, there is a surprising amount of stuff on youTube (I even saw a version of Pee Mak earlier with english subtitles, but it was with some very unfortunate overdub in indonesian or something - also the marvelously strange and very long agentinian UFOHistorias Extraordinarias... but in spanish without subs). For the paying options, I suspect Netflix might have a good chunk of the korean stuff and some of the more arty things can probably be found on Mubi (I need to give them another shot, because when they launched the service in Switzerland the offer was pretty anemic and the pricing not very engaging).

I'm not afraid to admit that I won't even consider watching a movie that's subtitled. Come up with dubbed versions, or GTFO, it's not a real film. Reading the subs takes me away from watching what's actually going on in the movie.

Not that I'm against words on the bottom of the screen. I turn on Closed Captioning for a lot of shows I watch because they mumble or speak with accents I can't quite make out. But that's different because I'm only glancing at the words occasionally.

Dubs are fucking retarded (which explains why Hoss likes them over subtitles, I guess). I've never understood wanting to watch an actor but not hear him/her. Over in Russia they dub EVERYTHING and it's ridiculous; people go to see a movie starring Brad Pitt, but they get the voice of some drunk Russian slob which doesn't match the actor's appearance and acting and doesn't carry the same emotion as the real thing. It drove me crazy.

Dont russians do overdubs too? That is, over the sound of the movie, you have a single guy translating all the lines in a neutral tone. I wonder if when you get used to it you can mentally block that voice over in the same way you don't realize you are reading subtitles in a subbed movie. A few years back you would have simultaneous translations for some movies in festivals. You would grab a head set (sennheiser did those) that had an infrared receptor or something and a translator would mumble all the lines (or maybe someone reading a script?). Anyway it felt like UN session or something. After that they used crude dot matrix screens to display subs under the screen and now with how cheap video projectors are, they just beam a sub file on the screen or on an additional projection surface. It's rarely timecoded though so you have a poor sob that has to hit space bar to move the subs along (which can lead to some hicups, but it's better than learning Tagalog).


The derail is being a little too big for comfort, I'll report the first post of the derail to see if a mod can split it into its own thread.

I loved this movie before I even watched it and when I did I loved it more.

Why cant i meet a chick like John Krasinski and Jason Sudakis's penis did. Emily Blunt and Olivia Wilde and myself on a beach and they are into magic the gathering and emily blunt is doing the yoga she learned from this movie on my downstairs region during evening hours.

I prefer original voices but english subtitles. I watched a GotG trailer for another country last night and it was all dubbed over, totally ruined it for me.
I wouldn't worry much about the derail, EoT was released and now in video, it's thread was soon to go dead anyways.

watched this last night and enjoyed it - war porn, aliens, emily blunt, and drill sergeant GAME OVER MAN were all awesome. Tom Cruise was Tom Cruise, he gave it 100% like Something definitely felt missing from the movie, like some more backstory to the aliens or maybe humanity more on the brink of extinction but definitely worth a watch. I think I'm going to read the manga this is based off, sounds cool.

I must have some sort of mild dyslexia - I read slowly apparently...everyone reads faster than I do...if I read to fast it gets mixed up some- also how I read and watch it messes me up in anime's etc. because their speech is not structured like English- so it throws me off when the translated sub starts with a name for example, but the spoken name is later (usually at the end) and it throws me off etc.

also most things are visual and action...how are you to read subs and take in all the stuff going on- esp in animes where they have a tendency to talk volumes while fighting and action is going on etc.

so...for me...dubbed all the way :)

People who prefer dubbing are the same assholes who see those big electronic notification signs over highways and slow waaaaay the fuck down to read them as they drive under, backing up traffic for miles.
