There were over 90 iirc.

I closed them all in the original game

Twice.

I loved every one.

Edit: Oblivion Gates (Oblivion)

There are 100 distinct locations where a gate can appear, and as each gate is closed that particular location will never spawn a new gate without the use of console commands. However, no more than 60 separate gates will appear during a single game, including 10 gates which will always open in designated spots

Ok wow. From my perspective, that's fucking absurd.

I'm curious what exactly you loved about their design. Personally, I found the repetitive level construction and often obnoxious maze-like routing from entry to tower extremely taxing. I quickly resorted to using invis to allow me to ignore 99% of mobs, and high acrobatics and speed to invalidate 99% of the routing issues by just jumping my way to the tower from wherever the entry was.

Seriously the most tedious and uninteresting design I've encountered in a TES game. The first encounter with the tileset and environment evokes a simple "hey, this is kinda neat," but I definitely didn't find it awe inspiring enough to justify taking my time enjoying them.

It pretty much came down to the modded combat that let me dance around challenging opponents.

if you never go to kvatch, all the gates to Oblivion stay shut. problem solved.
Yeah, but then your armor sucks. Better to just do Kvatch and a few more of the static ones at L17+, and just save scum transcendent stones until you get one feather and however many magicka you need to fill all the slots you're using non-unique items in.

Also it stops the annoying bug in the Remaster where invisible gates spawn before you've gone to Kvatch.
