I don't remember having access to magic chests out of the gate either, which is amazing.

Also am I missing some excavate tool or is the best way to dig still placing objects and then picking them up?

Is this worth playing if I don’t really care about survival or building all that much, but enjoy exploring and rpg combat? I saw somewhere that it’s kind of like BoTW which wouldn’t be so bad since weapon durability can be toggled off.

You can pretty much ignore the building aspects by just claiming a house/town/castle that's already there. Just need to patch the holes in the walls and roof and they are good to go.

There's always going to be a certain amount of crafting/survival stuff you have to do but basically if you want you can play it like Skyrim. Weapon durability really isn't that big a deal. Everything gets repaired instantly when you use your workbench and there's anvils all over the place that do it in the wild too. Toggling it off would make wands even more ridiculously overpowered than they already are.

I think it's a super great exploration game. They definitely reward exploring. Crafting makes your life easier, but you could get away without it if you wanted. Your character can be transferred to other games too, so you could always just go to someone else's game and they could give you whatever crafted thing you want.

I don't understand why these games don't have persistent worlds. I think that would make them far more interesting (to me, anyway). Can't afford the infrastructure?

I'm ~20ish and playing with 2 other people and it's pretty cool. There's a LOT of quests and shit to do. I host the server so I turned off some QoL shit like weapon durability which sucks ass for proj weapons, and increased grow speed/craft speed. Combat's pretty good but you absolutely get swarmed solo sometimes. We also made the mistake of fighting like level 15's at level 8-9 and it was a bit of a battle. They die at a decent pace, but nearly every hit from every mob did 3/4 my hp.

This game is WAY more flushed out than I expected. It's literally an MMO in a Survival game. I'd love base defense and some other stuff, but I'm only level 20 so I've got a lot of stuff to see and probably some new mechanics still. Overall glad I waited from the early open beta until now. I could see being less wow'd if I saw these places just being added piece by piece every x months.
