I wouldnt make it so the 1 person has fun at ruining the fun for 10 others.

Off the chain twinking of lowbies would kill any balance or chance for new people to get into the game.

Agreed if we assume content at an equal level to the player is challenging then not being twinked AND not having players to help you is a problem. You can have either but if you have none then it sucks.

I'm sure we can think of a better way to twink instead of just giving high level gear to lower level players. Any games that came out recently allow twinking?
If a MMO is going to support twinking, WoW's heirloom system is a good model to follow.

So all this talk of loot drops just rustled my jimmies. EQ1 was outstanding. If I saw a dude in the EC tunnel with two SSotY I knew he spent a 'little' quality time in lguk. I did a 13 hour camp for my Ghoulbane one night... Why can't EqNext have set loot tables and 10 hour camps?!
I have three little kids, there is no fucking way I can't spend more than an hour or so on a game at any given time. That's why I play GW2. I can log in for 45 minutes and do my daily achievements and maybe a zerg raid and call it a night. If EQ1 was like that I would have had my epic and full dragon faction gear. I couldn't and can't put in the time to get epic level gear in games now... Guess what... I'm OK with that.
Maybe an EQ game I dream of can't be made because money is everything and if shithead kids and filthy casuals like myself don't buy subs they don't make money. EQ Next should be EQ. Just update the graphics to modern times, make quests worth a little more and expand the lore and they will come... Probably even filthy casuals like me.

Ya EQ1's loot system was awesome. It sure was great walking into lower guk for xp/gear and having all the best camps taken up by solo cash farmers. And that was in 2000 when people didn't know much about online worlds and economies! Imagine how awesome it would be now!!

It's because they want people like you to play and get hooked. You may be a casual that is ok with not doing 10 hour camps but plenty casuals will not play something that even has that as an option if it means someone can get something they "cant"

I think a balance is in order between the terrible random drop system in place today and the rose tinted glasses loot system of EQ. Something like mob specific items Yes! Specific camps No. I don't think "camps" are going to be a thing in EQ Next anyways. I asked Georgeson specifically about the loot system and camps at Pax and he said mobs won't hang around in the same spot forever if you keep killing them.

I could see a Frenzied Ghoul always dropping a FBSS but finding him is going to be the challenge.

The EQ1 loot system was just fine. It was the lack of instancing that allowed the farmers to monopolize camping the bosses. Combine EQ1s rare loot drops from bosses with vanilla WoWs instanced group dungeons and you have a winner IMO.

That's my point. It sucks that money drives development... You water down the game for people like me and you piss off the hard core gamers.

Its a backwards argument on my part... And my points contradict themselves. there's a reason people play p99. People like nostalgia and we yearn for that same feeling we got playing EQ back in 99-02... Evercrack indeed.

Instead of comparing hardcore players vs casuals, IMO go with mature vs immature. A mature player, especially one with a spouse, kids, a job, and limited playtime knows they will never be able to keep up with the player who can play every day for several hours and raid whenever they want to. A mature player doesn't measure their self esteem or ?p?en based on what gear they have or don't have. In other words, if someone else puts in more time playing than a casual player, the game should reward them accordingly.

When EQ1 came out I was a newlywed with a baby on the way. Raiding in EQ1 was 100% impossible due to more important real life priorities. I didn't whine and complain because guilds like FOH could routinely defeat Vox and Nagafen when I was still slowly chugging alone in lower level zones. Reading about what the high end guilds were doing just gave me something to look forward to in the future.

In my case it wasn't until PoP came out that I started having enough free time to raid. FOH had PoTime on farm by the time I finally acquired my bard epic weapon. The fact it took me significantly longer to complete the bard epic quest compared to hardcore raiders who could play every night had absolutely zero impact on the sense of accomplishment and memorable experiences I had with the guildmates who helped me along the way.

I haven't played an MMO since then that came to replicating that kind of experience, which is why I hope EQNext bases their loot design around EQ1, not Diablo or WoW.

And thats a testament to how well the EQ items were designed. You could grab your epic weapon class a couple expensions down the line and it was still a huge milestone.

This didn't happen in EQ Vanilla through Velious so I am not sure why you would think this.

If anything it made it easier to enter the game due to open world layout and populations spread evenly due to going back to areas for their twinks; thereby meeting others to play with. I am sure it got worse over time, but then again there was also a lot more content and level caps to reach after SoL heading into PoP. So a Robe of the Magi or Sash from LGuk didn't take a lot of priority for gearing any longer.

Lets keep the psychology of MMO players out of our hypothetical feature circlejerk. I doubt anyone cares if you think raiders are "immature" or that players that play less are somehow more "Mature"

Edit:

Also, to discuss the whole getting your epic a few xpac things after it came out thing.

I agree that was the way it used to be and people enjoyed that. I remember doing old world content I missed when I could not raid and enjoying. But, you have to remember that the MMO scene has...devolved maturity wise. If they see a shiny new weapon someone is weidling and they cannot get it they get angry and complain and quit. It's sad fact and I wish it would change but it doesn't look like it will.

What the game needs is enough content that a player who sees a shiny sword from a raider doesn't care as much because he has tons of shit to do crafting wise or Exploration wise.

Didnt the devs say EQN will play something like LoL? If this is true, EQ1 fans are going to hate this game. I have a feeling EQN is going to be about button mashing, constant maneuvering, and upgrading items often. This isnt your daddy's MMO. LoL and DotA rule the online PC gaming world. SoE is looking for a score, not a niche game.

They took this route with Planetside 2. Basically modifying core sets of early Battlefield gameplay features.

Most of the legacy Planetside players decided it was shit. But SOE seemed to have reaped the benefits of popularization despite having major technical issues in its first year.

Edit: I expect EQN to walk down the same road Planetside 2 has. Expect significant technical issues, significant ability balancing issues, and most importantly expect sweeping content/mechanical neutralization in the name of balance.

PlanetSide2 is fkn awesome. If EQN was on the same level as PlanetSide2, I would be happy. The thins is, PS2 has no PvE, and is first person combat - two details making designing/programming the game much easier. Add in the voxel terrain and mandatory questing and raiding, and the devs have their work cut out for them. EQN is a huge project that has so much hype..can they create a game that even gets 2 million subs, much less 10 million?

Felmega... I can't imagine any reasonable person preferring EQ combat to LoL combat. It's so vastly superior that it's laughable.

If SOE is gonna produce a combat experience as clean as a top-tier MOBA, I say awesome.

Somehow I don't it though.

I think they wanted classes and combat to be more like a MOBA in the sense they want players with specalized builds and roles. But, I doubt you can find anyone who thinks EQ1s combat was "Good" just like Quaid said.

I think Moba style combat would be pretty fun to play in a MMO environment.

Me too I can't wait to grief people with hooks and ground slams knocking them into the crust of the earth.

If I can't blow a hole in the ground, I'll leash an earth elemental to the level 1 area and get him to trigger it.

No worries on dudes double jumping, I'll put up an icewall on the other side that they can't jump over.

Remember that ogre sitting in the bank door?
