Related question, why hasn't anyone built an entire game around multi boxing mechanics? I'm thinking old school style of like Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, Might and Magic from the early 90's but with a smooth multi character gameplay loop like boxing in EQ.

Seems like it could be legit
would love someone to distill the experience of full group automation into a rich rpg

right now it’s illegal, but tons of people accept the risk anyway because it has some easy-entry, yet high skill ceiling strategic and planning aspect that is hard to find in other games

making that its own legal experience seems like a marketable concept

should be a whole genre honestly

I’ve never played it but I think there is an emu server like the Hidden Forest that’s built around this concept

I'd probably play it. I made a joke about the game mordor a few days ago and now I've got that itch to see if I can dig it up. I really liked the old rpg games where you geared up a crew to whack stuff, whether its baldurs gate types or final fantasies or what have you. TONS of great games let you play a bunch of characters at once and they were excellent games.

If it's party based it's better to just make it an offline game because other players are just a hindrance at that point. I agree that the genre has been underused lately, maybe the success of BG3 will prompt some new titles. Even BG3 still has a sense of one character being "you" and the other characters in the party being their own individuals, older games didn't have that at all.

I think there's still potential for single character MMORPG's but the development has gone entirely the wrong way with the concept. The original idea was to bring tabletop D&D to life and you would exist as an adventurer in this huge fantasy world. It was about being immersed in the world first of all.

But in the 20 years afterwards, the genre went away from world building and made it into player-is-the-hero story stuff where you follow UI prompts to do a choreographed dance to get your loot while zoomed out to max. The original EQ box bragged how it would take many hours to cross the game world, now people bitch if they aren't instantly teleported to the dungeon, preferably directly to the boss fight without any trash. The genre has entirely abandoned any sense of immersion, which was what it was originally all about.

Interaction and competition and reputation and etc are cool in an mmo. People even like these kinds of things in the whale-based mobile games that are clash of clans clones. They want a community. You can want to run a squad and also have some mmo elements. In fact tons of eqers like playing their one dude for raids, and on progression or race stuff, while spending most of their playtime with a boxed crew.

The sad thing is that Everquest has all the elements and game design to fully implement a squad-based MMORPG, as proven by 3rd party software, but the people in charge just haven't figured out that they can make more money by offering it as a built in feature of the game. For some reason, they seem to think that running your own group is taboo or something.

I think it has more to do with skill of programming. They already kind of acknowledge the value of soloing with the mercenary system. They just choose to not implement the system on earlier expansions or at the start. I think that would involve actual skill at programming. So attempting then to expand on that system and just allow players to build six man groups would require even more programming. I would try out a server that did that, even if it would be both a bit insane and funny to see. That would be a new kind of TLP.

Ya'll are weird. You're literally describing something like Baldurs Gate 3. "But its different" No.. it isnt. You're literally controlling multiple characters that are different classes, using different abilities. You can set short cut keys all the same for them to run a script/macro. Just like EQ.

If anything, I'd like to see them do more with the Persona system. Sort of like the Journey Emulator server, but with more refinement.

So I'm not the only one bewildered by the last few posts.

People cheat because it gives them an advantage. "DPG should add built-in automation and make their MMO a single player game" would kill the game faster than adding forced PVP to every server. lmao. Neither the cheaters nor the normies would want this.

Some people cheat because they feel its the meta and everyone else does it, or because they dont consider anything up to x level to even be cheating, or to just use boxes etc more easily. Is isboxer alone even cheating? Setting up commands to play 2+ dudes from 1 monitor on truebox?

Allowing people to have fun by playing the "group game" solo during odd hours doesn't mean they'll only ever do that. Many many many of these folks raid on their main, and do early progression content and unlocks with others, and even do side content or older content raids with other humans.

Went and knocked out the Monk 1.0 in the last couple weeks, now that I actually need it for the 2.0. The click is still (very situationally) useful for the rare occasions where I don't have ranger buffs, very nearly on par with modern haste potions while also adding a lot of ATK. So that's kinda neat.

Before the OOW launch the only thing I had left in the quest was Xenevorash, and while I figured he'd be soloable at 70, I wasn't prepared for how soloable. Fight was over in around 15 seconds and never went to full burn. Didn't even need to hit mend or potion. Wouldn't be surprised if all of the epic 1.0s are soloable at 70, for people playing newer personas that don't have them. Was never a fan of the pre-quest replacements. They definitely have their place, though, for the classes with more annoying / time-consuming 1.0 quests.

Onward to the 1.5

I loved having SEQ on an old linux laptop. Having a map on a separate screen with (eventual) respawn timers made pulling so much fun.

I was able to hide it on original live, even pulling the named cycle in Trak's Teeth on my mage (back when Forager/Hunter had only one spawn up at a time). It was buggy, and after killing say a Forager, you could /assist my pet and get the new Forager on target immediately. If /assist came up empty, it meant a named was up. It's different now with like 15 foragers/hunters up now just to speed up the Sebilis key quest.

Anyone know the time breakdown on a PL from 50 to 70 during the holiday?

I can say that it was pretty much exactly 2 hours to go 60-65 in a PL last night (with a +50% potion running). There was some dead space too. If I were to guess, I'd say four hours with a +50% pot would get you from 50 to 65-67.

How feasible is it to do the beastlord 1.0 on a persona at level 1? Can I do it without leveling? Thinking it would be an interesting challenge one of these weeks to try and get an epic at level 1 and beastlord's the only persona I have left.

Beast is pretty easy iirc, the worst part about that questline was the sheer amount of 24 hour respawn NPC you need to talk to, and there's no plane requirements for it iirc

Rajaah Rajaah Can testify to this. We were constantly oom when we were trying to farm our groups keys. You will get over run in Trakanon's Teeth with spawns now. The original spawn rate you could "kind of" sit off to the side a bit and be fine. But there is SO MUCH SHIT respawning so quick that its a gah' damn shame that the exp modifier for the zone is fucking ass.
