vaniki was an interesting server. the rewards are cool enough people still want them, which i consider a rare win by daybreak… ran through at some point trying to solo them but you hit a wall with mechanics requiring multiple bodies eventually and it’s just cheaper to buy runs than to buy gear and multiple accounts sadly, or at least it was whenever i tried it before it got to live with current twink gear

was it the worst performing tlp of all time by player count?

not knocking it, just remember observing that somewhere. i played it really late postlaunch and it was quiet. wondered why with the unique rules. heard it botched early rewards and killed off initial population or something

Yep. And, here's the thing. After our last attempt to go back, both my brother and I said the same thing, "I can't believe we used to find this fun."

When you get right down to it, EverQuest really didn't have THAT much going for it other than nostalgia. They had two and a half decades to add meaningful additions to the game. Instead, they regurgitated the same content year after year with slightly higher hit points, mana, and ac.

After you take a step back, allow the nostalgia glasses to fall off, and take a real honest look at the game, EverQuest is a very, very shallow game with little more to do than grind levels, alternate advancement points, and gear. That's it. Nothing more... just three basic things you see in just about every single MMORPG made since.

Where EverQuest could have shined was elaborating on what made it special; character interdependence in groups and raids. They could have further refined the game to allow users to play multiple characters WITH OUT using 3rd party software. Instead, they shoved their collective heads in the sand and pretended that nobody used 3rd party software to run their own groups and insisted that a nearly 30 year old game still has a massive vibrant player base that can easily put groups together of necessary classes all played by individuals.

Like it or not, EverQuest is a super shallow game that only exists to this day because people like us won't let it die even though we all talk about how much we fucking hate what it has become.

My last trip down nostalgia lane showed me that. There's way better options out there in the MMORPG space.

Put the nostalgia glasses away, say your goodbyes, and let it die already. I only pray that the majority of the losers that caused the innevitable death of EQ at SoE/DBG/DPG never get in positions of making meaningful decisions for other MMORPGs. If anything they have proved, it is that they have no right to be in the industry. Don't get me wrong, there have been and still are some damn good people working on EverQuest, but those people generally are not the ones making the decisions.

The decision makers are the problem. Looking at you Jchan. Looking at you.

No one ever wants forced interdependence in their MMO. Literally ever. FFXI tried that shit, and it had to go back later and fix it with mercs.

You are right that they should have improved and expanded on mercs though. Instead they wasted time and resources adding shit like a half baked card game.

The core game is still fun if you like xp and gear grinding though. Which I am definitely do. I have been addicted to the Ding! since the first time I played Dragon Quest on the NES. That shit is what my autism is built on.

EQ can be very complex but it's complex in the speedrunner/optimizer sense versus through the natural depth of it's intended gameplay. The final batch of Vex Thal skips employed on Teek during the launch of Luclin were immaculate. No trash clear Plane of Growths, perfect Dracoliche pulls that carefully funnel feared characters, zero AE Voxes and Nagafens, zero trash Thall Va Xakra pulls, zero trash Velkator pulls, Dain warps, etc. are all pretty fancy even if they've lost their novelty over time.

I'm having flashbacks of release build EQ2 with every single tradeskill having forced interdependence. Then giving that slog up to exp only to have my group invite a moron who dies trying to get to us 20000 meters away, giving us all exp- debt. I wonder why the game didn't take off? :p

We know this server is going to suck for the first 9 months due to how fast the xp rates and how slow the unlocks are but have any of the top guilds announced their plans for frostreaver?

Haven't heard anything from faceless, RI or mess yet.

This server is also going to compete with Teek hitting the sweet spot of everquest expansions. These expansions are way beyond yearly rerollers, but I still think its causes slight contention.

And then the server will also be competing with EQL beta and the possibility of no MQ dimishing overall pop. This could, and probably will be a train wreck.

Maybe the eq devs just hate their jobs but are too stubborn to leave so theyre fucking the game on purpose to kill it so they can get laid off and collect? Makes more sense than having retarded lockout timers and no 2nd truebox server. "Fixing" this tlp to not be dead is like 2 conceptually basic moves and bam, its good.

EQL won't have a whole lot of traction. Sure it will be extremely popular at launch but with their being a subscription fee, microtransactions, classic only (aka no content) it doesn't have the legs to compete with frostreaver or lethar. Granted frostreaver is shit too but the server gets better once we get pop and 4/8 unlock cadence starts.

There was more guild posts within the first hour of EQL than there was in the first 4 months of frostreaver.

frostreaver wont have the population to make it to PoP at this rate

Server is DOA. Their unlock timelines are retarded. Should have had expedited releases like Selos (no half lockouts). Make it a speedrun.
