Holy hell. All they had to do was copy and paste Aporia and Cata’s game, setup a nice expansion unlock pace (all the way to live EQ), and then count their money. They had a months long beta test that proved the model was well received and profitable.

What the game was 25 years ago doesn't matter. This "game" is comparable to THJ. That's the server they killed with the lawsuit, "stole" the ideas, and want the userbase to now give them money. THJ was purportedly making a ton of money (possibly more than DBG was on EQ?) without all this extra bullshit while being a totally free game.
From the sounds of it, THJ had a much more generous donations for power set up, where, as mentioned before, one person could give the whole server an XP boost for 24 hours, as well as a couple other server wide buffs. The only other "pay for power" was that you could sell the currency you get from donations on the AH for plat, but you also get that currency as drops. I had way more currency than I wanted/needed just by playing the game from drops. There is a point where bag space hardly mattered, so why spend tokens on even that.
On a larger scale, the whole ordeal with THJ is just another example of how copyright law desperately needs an major overhaul. Books being under copyright for 70 years after the author dies is the extreme example of the retardation in the system. Games are consumed at a much faster rate and 20 to 25 years seems just about right for them to go into the public domain.
Regardless of what they do here, I'm not willing to replay/relevel just so I can see the xpacs that came after LDoN, even if they copied THJ 100%. Reading this thread can be entertaining at least. On the other hand, if THJ had a box price, a monthly fee, plus a cash shop for convenience that made it feel like they were purposely designing the game to be slower, I would have never taken a chance on it either.

On fippy there were no kronos and the rmt market was outrageous. I got daily offers during kunark to buy my bcg for real money. I couldnt buy other items I wanted like the ring from vp trash for plat - usd only. It was toxic and shitty. When I played on phinny, with kronos, it actually felt like less rmt pressure because it was more common but less impactful and plat was used regularly since that converted into krono and life was much more grand.
All these people talking about kronos as if they are behind rmt are retarded failures with no or shit jobs and no concept of BASIC economics. People rmt because the demand is there, not because the market or currency is there. The farmers will obtain whatever supply is desired to meet the demand. Get rid of krono and make everything nodrop? You've done NOTHING to change the demand from whales. So now only organized rmters with sophisticated setups will sell (and for more) and retards like half the posters here are cut off from the process so they cant compete.
Eql is looking more and more like a lot of people want to be rmters and are lobbying for rules that will make it so only them (professional rmters) will be viable and the competition will be cut out.

Releasing any game, or any product for that matter, is about making money. The idea for exploring EQ world for casuals 20 years after the game is good, and the THJ sounds like they tried to use someone elses work without owning it.
But hey, you do you, anti-capitalist, have fun living in the woods in a shelter. After all, trying to make money on a license you own is apparently bad.

This is always their MO. When they 'nerfed' AE PLing, they did it by adding a shared cooldown to enchanter point blank stuns. Now you can't cycle through 3 different color spells and lock down the pack of mobs in the pull. Finally, RMT powerleveling is dead! Oh wait, all that did was move it so you needed 3+ out of group enchanters to do the same thing, so only bot armies can offer PL services and normal people can't form AE groups anymore? Huh.
There is a (conspiracy) theory (that is true) that the daybreak employees are taking kickbacks from botters to help subsidize the pitiful wages they are paid while living in southern California. How else do you explain half a dozen picks of sirens grotto up with blatant automated crews running automated mules to vendors all the while daybreak mongoloids go on panels and shrug and go WE NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX BOTTING.
If Daybreak is involved, expect them to import the ineptitude and scumbaggery from main line everquest into EQL. That's not even having to humor the "Secrets spawns raid bosses/loot for his buddies" stuff.

I doubt anyone in San Diego, CA is taking kickbacks from botters.
It's much more likely that EG7 / DBG just pays out bottom 3% wages in the area because they are milking the IP and they can get enough mediocre but interested devs to keep the game afloat. Meanwhile they likely pay slave wage CM teams outside of San Diego (Or contract it out, idk) who do the bare minimum possible and probably just half-assed respond to reports that sometimes hand out suspensions. The biggest problem with the conspiracy theory is that it presumes competency in anyone working for Darkpaw. A CM would need to: engage the botter, coordinate a payment system, find a way to shield the botter and then cover their tracks from all the other minimum wage CMs while avoiding any of the salaried employees.
If it works, I'd bet those CMs milking the system make more than any of the EQ devs.

Now i've made a second acct and ran it again, oh but wait the person that with 2 accounts did the same thing, they leveled a second killer account and a second leech account. Now while i'm getting 2nd loot, their getting the 3rd and 4th. I paid to win, but they paid to win harder... How does this make it not pay to win?
It does more than that, it prevents regular players from trading in game for high end stuff and makes them choose between either not getting the thing or buying the thing with $$. If you have a loot system like THJ did(All dropable but attunable, fast lockouts), you allow regular players to sell thing extra gear they got for in game currency and use that in game currency to buy thing thing they want. If you have a system like EQLegends does, that extra stuff rots in the bank or gets deleted, the regular player doesn't get enough Motes to upgrade what they want, so they either buy with Cash or don't upgrade. The person dragging around 7 toons gets a bunch of extra Motes and then sells those motes for plat in game and that plat for $$ in the tunnel.
It doesn't take a "Sophisticated setup" it every retard can do it, even the retarded twins were able to figure this shit out. It benefits RMTers and whales at the expense of the rest of the playerbase. It's not designed to stop RMT it's designed to encourage it.
You don't get rid of RMT by systems that create scarcity, you get rid of RMT by banning the people that do it quick enough that it's not profitable.

Aside from convenience xp pots, they haven't confirmed what is going to be in the shop just yet. Getting mad about that is a little premature. It's also unclear whether unlocks will be character based or account based. The tradeskill depot and dragon hoard were account unlocks that you had to buy from the cash shop in EQ, for example. If they are character based, then I might be inclined to agree with you, depending on how grindy the in game unlock is. Then again, only your race and primary class are locked in, so maybe not.
Lots of stuff has not been finalized or even announced yet. The game itself is pretty fun as is. Symphonic Aura is a fucking amazing game changer for bards. You can have up to 5 buffs just flat out autocast, no fizzling, no missed notes, no melody. It doesn't interfere with melee or casting. It is awesome. The focus stealing effect is extremely easy to use. Upgrading items is as simple as farming copies or making them via tradeskills. Motes are helpful, but nothing you can't just do for yourself without them.
How they intend to monetize will certainly impact players. That is always the case. That said, their competition is really just the TLPs and emus. No one is coming to play EQ as a new player in 2026. Anyone who loves the Live-slop is going to stay there. If they continue to tighten up and polish everything from vanilla -> POP so that it all just works and is solo/casual friendly, they should be fine.
