They just needed to release expansions in a timely manner for a success. The incompetence is astounding. The interest and initial population was there and THJ showed that you could retain a lot of people.

The game runs on nostalgia, we don't want new zones. We want the same shit with QoL and being strong vs content. Throw in some new shit, just a sparkle suffices.
New content will drive the old school players away.

It's mind blowing they had the perfect blueprint for success (THJ) and somehow still managed to fuck this up. Getting people in the door is easy, keeping them is hard and getting people back after they leave will be impossible in most cases. New content somewhere in the distant future will not make anyone forget this abomination. WoW4life it is.

not that i care about hate DC or hand of the maestro.. but has anyone noticed that this patch note from 3 weeks ago still hasn’t actually taken effect in the game?
there are some bug reports about it but almost no activity in them. lot of apathy in the remaining players
same thing for the alter plane hate x reagent patch note. small thing but the note just didn’t actually get implemented

Buddy got me into this. Gotta say - I'm not really understanding the hate. It's a pretty decent trip down memory lane. Enough new mechanics to make you think about some interactions a little, but it's basically the same. It's like fucking your wife's sister.
Anyway, mostly amused at all the "oh, I poopsocked this and there's nothing to do" "how could they fuck this up.". Guys, you paid $20 for this. I KNOW you spent more on games you played way less on Steam. Take it for what it is. Some power gaming dad game, play it till it gets boring, quit, and forget about it. Ain't that fuckin serious. Ya'll act like this was ever gonna be anything but an extreme niche game.
Just because a game is made doesn't mean you gotta play it for the rest of your life. Knock out a month and go play something else.

I agree with the advice that this isn't a game people should expect to endlessly play, but most of the hate for this game is due to this game copying a much better version that the owning company forced to close. IP theft aside, if you're going to shut down a third party group and try to rip off on their ideas, you need to execute it well.

A lot of the hate comes from drama outside the game itself.
The story goes that there once was a Emu server that, while not the first to include multi-class into one character, they were the most successful at taking the idea and making it work. It got hugely successful and they were taking "donations" for "server costs" which ended up being rather profitable for them. Supposedly the people who own the EQ IP (DBG) didn't even know about said server until a different EMU developer ratted them out.
Then DBG, instead of trying to work with developers of the successful EMU, sued the shit out of them and got it closed down (Emu devs supposedly asked to enter negotiations for licensing, or some such, after DBG took an interest). Instead DBG decided to hire the alleged rat to try to make a copy of the successful server, which is EQLegends.
Not sure how much evidence there is that Secrets was the rat. There was some email in the court files that was supposedly his?

Not that DBG has their finger on the pulse of their own community, but it doesn't really take a rat to find out about an emulation server when they're making tens of thousands of dollars a month with thousands of daily users for years.

Which server are you talking about? THJ def didn’t have “thousands of daily users for years.”
I think the other part of EQL is that it forces people into being a captive audience for Secrets who likes to do the bullshit of “let me put my own TWIST on it!” Like releasing some alternative Kunark timeline that nobody asked for ever

In the legal thread on THJ, that's how it was portrayed. The whole thing that kicked off the lawsuit was the email. Then DBG assigned the janitor (probably) to try to play the EMU server to collect evidence and couldn't even figure out how to properly scout zones with a rogue (who is invis to all at level 1).

Regardless of how it shook out, THJ wasn't some underground secret that Secrets ratted out. Secrets might've been involved in pushing for action against THJ, but that's uhh, more of a snake move than a rat move?

I don’t know when the server popped off but in our own threads here you can see it launched less than 8 months from the lawsuit and it was closed down within like 10 months
