Most of that is cast. Also this will easily make money. Although the post Covid movie market still hasn't snapped back to normal.

2 sucked in general but introduced characters that continue on
3 (Tokyo Drift) was a spinoff that introduced one key side character
4 (Fast & Furious) rewinds and goes back as a sequel to 2, introduces more characters that continue on

Fast Five was the popular one with a good story and brought all the characters together, stinger generated a lot of buzz
Fast & Furious 6 was a decent followup that delivered on the stinger from 5 which continued a plot point from 4
Furious 7 happens after 6 + 3 so the timeline is caught up, Statham comes in as the villain but Paul Walker died while filming it

8 and beyond get ridiculous with retcons and flimsy stories

I think if you watch the first one, and enjoy the cast and vibe, then you should like most of the series. The weakest imo is the 2nd one but that is the Paul Walker solo movie.

The order to watch them would be:

1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)
2. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
3. Fast & Furious (2009)
4. Fast Five (2011)
5. Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
6. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
7. Furious 7 (2015)
8. The Fate of the Furious (2017)
9. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
10. F9 (2021)
11. Fast and Furious 10 (2023)

Honestly, the first one is the only one I would consider good in any meaningful way. The rest just keep refining the formula into pure cheese and sugar, no meat. Movie junk food, basically.

Fast 10: The original Supra from the first film comes to life and starts racing against other street racers, only to crash and kill them and destrot their car. Dom and the team must take on this new menace terrorizing the streets of LA.

I liked calling it Fast 10, just for all the seatbelt jokes.

that's actually a great way to describe these movies. popcorn flicks don't really cover it. but movie junk food and/or movie fast food. they're never going to win any kind of awards, but they really aren't designed to. you just put it on when you want to watch some action scenes. no one takes them serious but you're not supposed to.

The series gets noticeably better starting with the 3rd movie. That's kind of the starting point to becoming a more involved movie than the even cheesier shit that took place in the first and second ones. But then it gets weak again with 8 and 9, but it's still much better than 1 & 2. So... I guess just start with 3, and go from there.

In terms of cultural relevance, the 1st.

The rest are just doubling down on the same.
