I think that's the trick here, there's content that people feel they need gear for... And they bust out the debit card, $500 later you have a whole inventory of 3* swords and they "gacha"
That would be the entire concept behind f2p games, yes

I commited to making PAL Cecil to use the shield thinking that will be a game breaker soul but I really want to see how much damage comes from dk cecil with dark sword. Too late now, I need to focus on getting high levels for the last few elites.

Started this today, pretty fun. What should be my priorities? Someone mentioned that it should be possible to clear Seph dungeon before it expires even now, but I don't think I want to rush anything.

Also, what the hell is up with the terribly choppy scrolling through menus? I'm on a Galaxy S6!

Their UI optimazation is shit.
Yeah, it's crazy.

Still in need of any sort of progress guidance, but I thought of a specific question as well: What's the significance of a highlighted blue border around abilities and gear I see when starting a level? Does that mean the dungeon I'm about to enter has upgrades for that character of that type?

The blue glowing is gear and character synergy. It's actually pretty important as it's required for a lot of the content. It amounts to matching the places you're clearing to series characters and gear. It provides a huge bonus, where 3* items can be comparable to 5*.

Ahh, cool. Thanks. Just farming the first few I've cleared for now. I have the partial ingredients for a lot of spells so I might as well work on those.

Im finding that most physical abilities are pretty useless besides the one that paralyzes.

I would prioritize Thundara, Thunder Strike, Dark Attack, Cura, as the starters. You'll probably get enough to Hone a Thunder as well. A lot of the current content is Thunder weak, and the new event has some Fire weak. I'd jus go through the story content and get your levels for STA and some equipment upgrades. You'll have plenty of time to work on the new event before it goes away and right now the story content is pretty short.

Did you drop $ to get those "few five star" items?
For sure he did. The rates for 5*s are horrible.

I'm over this game. Theres really no strategy once you get it down. It's pretty much a grind fest after that. I'd rather invest my time in PAD

The music was nice though!

To be fair, strategy in most FF games involved broken as shit mechanics, vanish doom anyone? It's debatable whether grinding for specific equipment is strategy or not, considering without proper planning some encounters will absolutely destroy you, elite antlion for instance, no matter how much you grind, if you don't have the spells to kill him, you won't.

Sounds like Aeris should be coming next. The event will likely be a collection event as opposed to the two we've had so far.

I'm currently running a team on JP with Aeris, and I think I like her better than Rydia.

Fun game. Started this morning and made it up to the Imperial Camp so far. I also did the daily GIL dungeon (managed to beat it on easy and normal), since from what I've read money becomes a bottleneck. I'm also on the 6th level of the ongoing event, though I don't think I've gotten anything useful from that so far (other than Cecil, I think!).

It's not entirely clear to me what determines whether I get "Mastery," though. I've had Champion status in all but the final boss and sometimes, but not always, that's sufficient...

Also, is it worthwhile to upgrade some equipment? I figure the 1 and 2 star stuff is just going to be fodder to level up better gear... but what about the 3 star stuff?

I also have a ton of minor orbs. Should I level up my 1 star abilities, or is that just a waste? I almost never run out of ability uses, and it's not clear to me whether it merely gives me more uses or also strengthens the skill.

Getting Mastery is a dependent on you meeting certain thresholds for each fight, total number of actions, whether you abused a bosses weakness, how many damage did you take from enemies and if anyone died. For instance to get mastery on the FF IV Mist Elite dungeon, you cant attack the dragon while in mist form, or youll not get mastery.

As far as equipment, that seems to be the entire game and is much more complicated to answer. Basically, youll need to level up gear for each of your characters that corresponds to the content you're doing. For instance there is Leather Armor (VI) that drops that is a 1 * armor, however when you upgrade it, combine it twice, it becomes a 3* FF VI armor that is best in slot for FF VI content.

This doesn't really begin to matter until you face elite dungeons and much harder content. I can safely say you wont really need to worry about the synergy until you're almost completely done with the normal dungeons but it doesn't hurt to save this gear for later use, all you need is 3 sets of an item to max it but with only 100 inventory slots, it can fill up fast if you go for everything. Keep in mind it is very easy to come back to these places and acquire it again.

For current priority FF 4 and 6 gear. while 7 gear will be important ONLY if the next event follows the japanese version timeline, with Aeris being released.

You can find the links on the first post of this thread for lists of all documented drop locations and their synergy if you ever feel like searching or being aware of what drops in the content you're doing.

As far as orbs go, honing abilities only grants you more uses and doesn't make them do more damage. Most bosses in the game are weak to thunder at this time, while the current event boss is weak to fire and the only boss I know of at the moment that is weak to ice is ant lion in FF IV.

Currently I use Thundara (lesser orbs) Fira (lesser orbs) and working on Blizzara for ant lion. I never really used the minor spells because my melee characters destroyed everything without any necessity of black magic til I hit my mid 20's. With the exception of Cure, which, well, is a heal and can definitely benefit from some honing.

I'll also add, I recently sold all my minor orbs while trying to get together all the Gil I needed to upgrade my shit... and made over 160k gil from selling minor orbs, so, you CAN hone them, to double down on any weakness a boss has, if you dont already have 2 of the higher tier magics. Otherwise, sell them bitches.

Awesome, thanks!

Maybe one more question: does it matter which item I use to level up another item (before combining them)? E.g. is there a bonus for using the same weapon, or using a weapon to level up another weapon?

There's a bonus if you use the same type, ie use a spear to level up a spear. But keep in mind that if you want to combine gear, you need to have multiple copies of that specific piece of gear. So you can level a Black Cowl with Wizard Hats, but if you pull a second Black Cowl, use it for combining

The thing with leveling gear is that it's a flat cost no matter what you use, so you may as well just use the best thing which is Scarletite/Adamantite and wait for the one day a week you can farm those. You can get boosts for combining a hat with a hat but it's quite a small boost?

This may not be possible when you are first starting out but once you've been in for a week it is. I just sell all spare gear other than the 2 extra copies needed to upgrade.
