Some more detail:

Lenna and Aerith are the best default White Mages because of their sometimes useful default soulbreaks. You want 2 White Mages so you can cast Protect and Shell on everyone on the first turn of battle, you'll also want Curaga so that's 3 slots worth of White Mage stuff locked into almost every party. What that 4th slot is could be:
*Boost used by the many White Mages with Support 2. Josef's Double Hit RM works well on a character with only buffs so you can trigger Retaliate twice with it.
*Diaga by any White Mage to turn it into DPS, this holy damage spell uses the Mind stat not Magic.
*Black Magic if you have a sage like Vanille/Hope.
*Double Cut or Tempo Flurry to trigger Retaliate twice with Paladin Cecil or Selphie. Paladin Cecil also has a ok-ish soulbreak and high defenses.

Wakka and Vaan are the best supports because they all do shit for damage without 5* gear and we got a free sword and thrown weapon for halloween, it doesn't matter that much though it's a small DPS increase.

Cloud is the best Samurai, give him Cyan's Katana!

I'd go with your list: Cloud/PCecil/Lenna/Wakka/Terra
Eventually you'll have everyone at 50 or 65 and will have loads of choice in every event.

a newer player can probably even tackle a lot of content by just bringing along Paladin Cecil with Protectga and Shellga to everything. just those together with his default soulbreak is probably enough mitigation for a pretty long time. that last buff he got was really awesome, i'd highly recommend that any new players get him levelled up with your first crew.

Basically it's gear and honed abilities. Levels really help but the first two will really be what let's you get further. Right now you're on the wrong side of the hump. Once you get over that hump and can clear stuff the game will open up and everything will be much more accessible. So keep hitting the dungeons and as soon as you have 50 Mythril you should do a pull.
I keep reading lvls don't matter and I think its another one of those things that ppl forget about from not having low lvl characters for so long. The amount of stats between a mid 40's character and lvl 65 character is enormous.

I was getting rocked in heroic dungeons a couple of weeks ago too ao when I had a party of full maxed out 5* gear, but I had cloud in the low 50's and everyone else in the 40's. Characters were getting nearly one shot in some heroic dungeons. Now with cloud at 65 and the rest of the party in the mid 50's I can just auto battle through those same heroics in the same gear.

While your characters are still low lvl you can use lvl 1 ruinga for 2 rounds in a heroic dungeon and a summon or all your other abilities in the 3rd round and then retreat and repeat.

I should have known better with the day I've been having but I threw 120 Mythril and 100 gems at the banner for a grand total of zero 5 star relics. That was 27 pulls and zero 5 stars. Taking it out further I am now zero 5 stars out of my last 30 pulls. That's just soul crushing. It doesn't make me want to spend more money on the game. In fact I think I'm done with 100 gem pulls. I've only gotten one 5 star on a gem pull and that was an Emerald Shield.

Just did my second 50 gem pull... and got 4 5*, 1 4*, and 6 3*. I'm just pissed that it was 2 hours before the FFVIII banner opened up.
Airblade FFV (which is funny, because my FFVI is a 3*++)
Flametongue FFV
Kaiser Knuckles FFV
Lilith Rod V
4* Platinum Dagger XII (which is nice because I can upgrade the one I have).

So I can get Quistis and some others from bonus quests... is it worthwhile to do that BEFORE the event stuff?

Is Vaan event only and I missed it?
looks like it.

Starting with Aeris & Tyro until I find another white mage. Wakka and Setzer will be my supports.
Cloud is gonna rock bitches as my samari unless I decide to get freaky with Gilgamesh and go full on taunt/retaliate.

You're still new so you don't know better but you pulled four 5 star items on an 11x pull. You do not get to complain or be pissed with those results.

Do Mithril pulls until you get full 5* gear for one team. 11 pulls are better value but not needed.

Team
Samurai (Cloud)
White Mage (Lenna)
White Mage (Paladin Cecil)
Support (Wakka)
Support (Vaan)

Characters can change for realm synergy/having their weapons/not having access.

Offense:
Retaliate
Boost
Armor Break/Breakdown

Defence:
Protega
Shellga
Friend Tyro players for Sentinel Grimore (like have almost ALL of your friends list be this). Y'Shtola works too with Stoneskin II.

Get these abilities honed once and Retaliate honed twice and you are good to go. Bottom Priority is Double Cut/Tempo Flurry/Josef Double Hit RM these are not required like the others but make it better. I just beat the hardest boss in the game (Necrophobe in the FF5 Event) with this stuff and almost every other boss too.

Drain Strike is terrible, you shouldn't be taking damage in the first place as you lose medals.
Necrophobe is a far cry from the hardest boss in the game.

Actually... I quit quite a while back because I bought enough gems for two 11 pulls and only got 4* items and then had enough mithril for another and got a single 5*. I had ground out a decent chunk of the game (at that time) and managed one natural 5* (Regal Gown). I don't feel so bad about bitching about it consider they went back and fixed the rates after I quit.

I mean active right now in global, though I suck judging difficulty. Maybe there is a harder dungeon boss but I retaliated them down too!

I had a string of bad luck the last few months but I've started getting 5* again, keep at it!

Seriously though this is not a good banner, save your Mithril for Sentinel Grimore, AoE Cures and Hastega. You won't be beating any bosses because you did a single big turn, especially with selfish characters like Squall who have good stats/abilities but no team synergy. If you really want monster DPS limit breaks then dump Mithril into Cloud banners.

I actually have the opposite problem of most people. My support and Mage relics have been great. But I have shit for physical damage relics.

Is there a list of the recommended path for dungeons (regular and elite)? I'm trying to earn some more stamina but's getting a bit brutal. I'm up to Library of the Ancients in normal, and have cleared a couple of the elites. Are the difficulty ratings actually pretty even across everything?

Yeah I noticed stamina is really slow at that point. I try to pick and choose and find some easy elites to give me some stamina and try to min/max. Tried to find a guide at one point but couldn't.

I think the difficulty ratings are mostly reflective of base statlines. I'd say they are mostly even across all ranges for the trash. Some will have trash that uses death/petrify or lots of AE but they generally just auto harder and have more HP. Boss difficulty (or ease) usually comes from their abilities or vulnerabilities so it varies quite a bit. I'd try to find the dungeons where you can blind a boss with physical abilities, silence a magic user, reflect a boss with single target magic abilities, chain sleep and blast with magic, etc. Or focus on realms where you have synergy for. A good 5* physical weapon with realm synergy and the retaliate meta can take you pretty far.

Are the memory crystals event-only? I'm really looking for Clouds to see if I can start gaining levels from using him.

Many are, but you can get some in elite dugeons. Luckily cloud is one of those, complete Corel Prison elite in ff7.

So I'm reading the reddit wiki for a guide to farm up a few greater holy/dark orbs for ruinga... and it lists the phantom train with a note that "Full Runs (Have to restart the dungeon every time you get the drop)"

Do they really mean I just need to farm up the entire phantom train because the boss can drop the orb?

if the boss is the last stage of the dungeon then yeah. i think they point it out like that on that guide because some stages have a boss round in stages other than the last stage, and in those instances you can just repeatedly farm the boss round.
