Yea, my thought was a way to avoid traffic by having people not sit there pointlessly when the light is green. But I guess that's dangerous.

As Hoss sideways mentioned, it takes a second or two for the car in front of you to get far enough ahead of you that you aren't riding on their ass. I'm assuming you leave a car length or so between you and the car in front of you on surface streets, but you stop much closer than that at lights. That gap doesn't happen instantly once the light turns green.

Its not hard at all in real life to just go at the same time the cars in front of you go. I promise, you guys can handle this task. Try it next time you go out, you're going to go "wow Cad is right, if everyone did this we wouldn't be sitting at lights."

I go pretty much immediately too, because I don't touch my phone while driving and I pay attention. But you still get the slinky effect because unless you're sticking 5 feet from the guy's bumper, you have to go slightly slower than the car in front of you to allow space to build up. I'm positive you are doing that just like I am, but you somehow think that you aren't because you take your foot off the brake immediately. So do I, but at least in my non-Tesla, for the first second or two I'm just rolling forward until there is enough of a gap because I don't want to have to use my insurance because the Tesla in front of me was riding someone's ass and had to slam on the brakes.

I'm not dangerously close to the car in front of me and going at the same time doesn't require you to be. The whole point is you maintain the distance between you and that car without letting them pull away first. As speed increases you increase your distance (because obviously you need more time to react + stop).

I'm really fucking baffled at how this requires this much explanation and discussion.

Cad I feel your pain in this one. It's the same here. It's not the car turning off that's contributing. I have that, and I don't delay people. Anticipating acceleration and deceleration is part of driving. People need to do better. What's even more infuriating is when people, when confronted with a green light, creep into the intersection and don't fully accelerate to driving speed until they are through the whole intersection. That means everyone behind them is trapped at their stupid speed. It's really inconsiderate. People need to do better at driving better and paying more attention.

Sure, there are lots of dumb things about traffic that we could improve by taking dumb people out of the equation, but that's (currently) quite hard to do.
Often the best solution is upstream:

My hometown had 1 , my current town has 3. I kinda agree about the traffic. I used to live in Charlotte NC , broke me from owning a manual transmission ever again.

What other time saving tips do you have? Stop signs with white outlines are optional? Shoulders make great passing lanes? Speed limit signs are minimums? Y'all should get together and write a book.

No, I'm not arguing against defensive driving. Driving too slowly, taking too long to start, these are recipes for accidents. Timid driving isn't good driving.
