None of those reward anything meaningful in the context of player power and they are never offered in a way that preempts content. IE, you can buy 1-100 skip to "catch up" but that's it, you cannot bypass current content or directly purchase loot or loot rolls. It undermines the implicit market agreement Blizzard has with the player base that you must "earn" relevant gear.

I am not against the concept of purchases for items, it is a value proposition. In an FPS they may offer a DLC with new guns and you can only use them if you pay $15. First off, it's not random, everyone is aware of where those items come from. Secondly, the value is not diluted by layers of RNG systems.

Similarly, if you want to offer pure RNG loot crates on cosmetics, then the value may be unsupported, but there is no functional value to those items so who cares as they in no way materially affect the gameplay.
Sounds like you don't understand this game at all... Loot isn't that strong unless you level it up and you're gated by the skill trees, you can't just buy your way ahead very much. Loot rarity effects durability, different skins, and some bonuses, but the major thing is leveling your stuff. The actual loot is pretty minor. It's all just guns and "people" , no specific armor slots or anything

The people "Survivors" and other heros you are not using are your stat boosting armor slots. You slot 2 heros and they can boost main stats. The survivor teams when sorted and slotted correctly are your stats while leveling up and gear leveling up so to speak.

It is not at all intuitive at first but as you get out of the starter zone it all starts to gel together. The second zone is also much much harder. Mobs are in larger waves and tougher mobs are in with the crowd.

Pretty fun game. Still kinda beer and pretzels to me but it has some legs.

Yea and the survivors and defenders aren't super restrictive, you can get by without them matching until you acquire the right ones, and you still need to unlock slots and level them, which isn't stuff you get from boxes

There is a bit of pay to advance faster though. You can retire all the schmoes you get from buying extra "rolls" on the loot boxes, this gives you xp to advance your main groups a bit faster. That and the collection mechanic gets filled up a lot faster if you buy loot boxes.

Thankfully I have not felt the need to buy stuff yet. Right at level 21 now.

Yeah I think this is the wrong game to crusade over microtransactions. Haven't spent money outside the initial purchase and I don't think you will have to. I'm in tier 2 and still progressing at a reasonable pacr.

This is structured like a mobile game. They throw tons of free stuff at you. Enough that you're "never wanting" at low levels. Soon, though, you realize your stuff isn't quite keeping up and to max it, you need to spend on gacha mechanics and for various arbitrary currency spending mechanics.

You present a progress curve that is logarithmic, so the progress slows and people want to keep momentum so at first, they just buy a little. By the end game, big spending is necessary otherwise you fall behind.

It's a never ending pve game, what exactly are you trying to keep up with? It's a game I never intend to "complete".

That's the point. Eventually you will think "man, it's taking too long and I haven't upgraded anything in forever, I'm going to buy some llamas and some boosts I really want to try that new XYZ!".

You can lead a horse to water, but they'll still buy microtransaction water boosts and extra water refill packs anyway.

Learn some self-control then.

Really don't have to spend a single dime outside the box cost. Unless you have zero patience and want legendary this and that right away or you have zero self control and must buy loot boxes.

For those playing, make sure you always have 1k vbucks banked. So when the legendary(super) boxes pop up on the special you can buy it. You can only get 1(so you can't spend $ and get a lot) and you can easily earn the bucks by playing. Supposedly they pop very 1-2 weeks based on people that played alpha and there are ones for melee, traps, heroes, survivors etc. These boxes are pretty much guaranteed 1 legendary from them sometimes more(friend got 2 from the box yesterday). So I figure always keep 1k banked(how much they cost) and then spend the rest on certain boxes when they pop.

Its not as simple 'pay to skip ahead if you want, no one is forcing you'. Any idiot can see that this has the potential to be a pure fun ass game and any idiot can see that the fun factor has been substantially curbed in order to manipulate people into purchasing micro-transactions. The presence of these gambling mechanics isn't neutral, they've actively diminished the core game play value in service of them.

I don't know that I agree with this.. I'm having A LOT of fun playing and I haven't spent any money over the box cost. I'm getting enough stuff from playing to not sweat it.. I don't feel like the gameplay has been fucked with at all..

My stream had two viewers, I think this is going someplace. Time to buy seven hundred llamas and put up YouTube videos of me opening them.

Anyway, the game is fun overall, but I'm getting a bit bored of the 20 minute loot/restock/explore/build phase before every map actually starts. I hope some later missions past the first town are a bit more varied and less predictable, it would be nice to have like moving objective (payload/escort style) or high resource huge base building maps, etc.

Probably the funniest thing I've read on the forum in the past week. Thanks Palum, I needed a chuckle.

None of those reward anything meaningful in the context of player power ... you can buy 1-100

5 years ago this would have been heresy.

you cannot bypass current content or directly purchase loot or loot rolls.

5 years ago, paying for a max level character would have been seen to be "bypassing content". Note I removed the word "current", because if you're level 12, then level 12 shit IS current.

It undermines the implicit market agreement Blizzard has with the player base that you must "earn" relevant gear.

Relevant in this context is a strange one, because under the gameplay conditions of Fortnite, Bacon is far more relevant (if you use Gas Traps and Energy weapons) than a loot llama in the first place. Relevant in a WoW raid tier is a shitload different... not to mention the relevancy of PvP, Loot Finder raids and Mythic progression.

PS: Still haven't paid a cent for this game. Have 5 legendary weapon schematics, and only blue heroes. Few missions into Plankerton and able to solo with some creative building.

Where's the thread where you guys tell me why ISPs should be able to charge for Facebook traffic as a separate line item in you bill?

Fuck that - Comcast should have you pay $10 and you get to open a loot crate! Guaranteed rare in EVERY CRATE!

What I am curious about is the 'new content'. Will they follow the trick mobile games do and release new content with cool new drops and prizes, but the only way to realisticly get the good prizes from the new content is to have been buying loot boxes and stuff to speed up your progression. Otherwise the top tier new content is too difficult thereby incentivizing the purchases.

Think people able to partner with people would make that a bit tougher as someone who has made the purchases can carry you, but curious to see how it goes.

Right now there's Founder Boxes, I expect that will regularly cycle out to feature different things/events/themes and that will be one of the larger incentives to buy vbux.
