The big deal was never that they made Dire wolves although the Rogan episode made it seem that way. The big deal was that they were able to edit many genes at the same time.Don't remember which thread the "Dire Wolf" bullshit was posted in, so posting this here (as numerous critics said at the time):

Right, the criticisms I saw said they had breakthroughs in their research and advanced the field, but they misrepresented the work in the media so they could get a bunch of publicity on it. There was some speculation on if it was done to appease venture capital investors that may have been breathing down their necks.
