And it isn’t just cost, it is ease of access. Pirating music and movies was like 2,000% faster to get it on my computer or iPod or whatever than trying to rip a friend’s CD or navigate the 1st digital stores where it was clunky and agreements weren’t in place for full artist catalogue, maybe you only wanted to hear that one banger and not 10 other shit tracks, etc.
Then Netflix and iTunes caught up and suddenly it was faster to just use their service and I had on demand digital media that I was willing to pay for the convenience.
Now I’m back to having to sift through 48 different streaming services to find a movie / tv show, so it is easier again to just go d/l the damn thing. I’m willing to pay a lot for convenience.
*edit: add steam to that argument so that it covers games in the same way.
*edit #2: Roku search has actually really helped address this bc it searches all h tbh e platforms for whatever I want to watch. So it takes some of the annoyance out of the process. It is really nice and works very well, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for 10 different subscriptions to access said content.

Yeah, but it's still locking you in at a shitty price. It's just less shitty than it could be if you cancel and restart.
If anyone's looking for a deal, it appears the way to go right now is to buy 3 month Essential keys for ~$16, then do the conversion (90 days Ess -> 36 days Ult). Works out to like $0.44 per day, compared to $0.61 a day if you just buy Ultimate keys directly. That's basically the price you were paying for Ult prior to all this bullshit. [Note: I have not actually tested this since my sub is already padded out into '27, just going by the current conversion rates on Xbox site and the current prices on Eneba.]

All the media streamers have gotten greedy (Netflix, Hulu, etc). Built their business on offering an insane amount of value at a fraction of the competition's (cable) cost, and now that they have killed cable, they are all jacking their prices. Game Pass is no different, except their first party game offerings have taken a nose dive in quality. So the "Day 1 on Game Pass" selling-point is mute, and quantity has never been a winner over quality for entertainment items that eat up your time.
