Wat? I don't remember Super Mario 2 forcing you to play any of the girls and if you didn't pick Wario in Mario Kart you're a fag anyway (with Mario, Luigi, and Bowser, there is no reason to play Peach).

Man-ginas in EQ, then WoW, always seemed shady because there were enough of a certain type of people that would actually treat all female models as real women. That meant giving them shit, following them around, and what we would today call, acting like a simp. What sane, honest person wants to deal with that shit?

How many manginas accepted help from these simps and only told them that they were a dude once they started trying to cyber them? At least half? 70% or more?

The most I really cared about the actual character models was that they kinda fit the class they were (while taking into account power gaming considerations) and wasn't a midget race. That meant my Druid was a Wood Elf, my Wizard was a High Elf, and my rogue was a Human with one eye and a mean look. WoW had a few more face options, so getting the mean look, like he could shank you at any time, took a few more seconds of scrolling (since the women in my group wouldn't play "ugly" horde). Never have I said, a woman would be better at that class than a man.

And almost universally they are the same people who have anime, furry, or otherwise "art/drawn" avatars on forums, YouTube/Discord profiles, social media profiles, etc.

Im going to go to my grave remembering the fat guy who got mad at 13 year old me telling everyone he was the person behind the female wood elf druid they flirted with.

My EQ mage was male, human , blond with a full blond beard, and an eye patch (cuz bitchez luv the eyepatch natch). So sorta like the meme guy. Oh and I tanked a lot cuz my jobaner was a dumbass and didn't know how to tank. Actually I would for a goof put on my efreeti breastplate (that looked like golden plate armor) and hit stuff with a staff beside my epic earth pet and ask people if they knew who the hell owned this pet?

I had a rl buddy who had a wood elf female alt in EQ. There was some dude he had a vendetta against and he made the alt to cyber the guy, got tons of items and money from him, married him in game. Then he’d log off the alt and just torment the guy with his main, making trains wherever he was grouping. He eventually got tired of it and told the guy he was a dude, called him a fag for cybering a dude, etc. Shit was so fucking funny, he lived for it.

This, exactly. No matter what excuse a person made for it, no matter what motivation they claimed, the reality was that they were treated as an actual RL woman by a sizable fraction of players in the game.

The purpose of a system is what it does.

As for the whole debate about playing a male or female character, it is easily solved

1) Is there a "power gamer" advantage of one over the other in terms of your playstyle? Or does the game gender lock classes or quests? You pick the one that matches the class/playstyle you want to engage in. This is much more rare now, but games like FF11 and TERA used to do this where you literally had to be a male or female character to gain access to certain stats gains or classes.

2) Is the game Asian or Western? If Asian game, you pick female because the devs and playerbase are thirsty and females get better "slutmogs" and body sliders (chest size max, ass max, thighs max). The male characters also tend to look feminine, probably to cater to the yaoi fans. If western, it is a case by case basis depending on the skill of their art and model/animation department

3) Are you lonely and/or want extra neuron activation? You pick female character. Are you trying to create the "ideal you" even though there is a 99% chance you look/are nothing like your character outside of maybe some facial hair that is kind of similar? You pick male character

I always typically used male avatars because lonely guys would bug people with female ones. I had buddies who'd complain about that, but then when I asked them why they don't just use a male avatar, they'd respond with something like: "guys give me free stuff".
