Halo is remember fondly because it was one of the first mainstream "cool" games.

My high school buddy who got me into playing UO had an apartment at one point in Brenham, and that summer between I guess my freshman and sophomore year of college, I got my old job at Taco Bell. I would get off work and go to his place and would play UO lan party style. I'd bring a bunch of tostadas and tacos and Hitting Deceit farming liches with silver weapons and pvping was some peak early MMO awesomeness. My dad had a second phone line installed after getting kicked off the internet playing Warcraft II one too many times.

The original PlanetSide to me is still probably the best. Vanu Sovereignty, Emerald server, dual mag riders and jump jet Maxx builds for base assault. We had it dialed in, and it really was some of the best PVP MMO related stuff that I remember playing.Cut my teeth on TFC in both quake and half life. To this date it remains the all time great CTF game along with tribes. Nothing even comes close.
I've been playing Black Mesa and hearing the old HL sounds and shit makes me miss TFC so much, between EQ and that game its about all i did for a good handful of years before WoW lolCut my teeth on TFC in both quake and half life. I mean if you could get a 250 ping on dialup, you were rocking it. Think about just how much better you probably were having to compensate for the lag back in the day.I used to play this mod in Quake called Super CTF. You could pick up power runes. Like subzero rune let you freeze people or leave an ice clone, Superman rune gave you flight, damage resist, and quad damage (fucking OP with a rocket launcher).
My ping on dialup was dogshit though - constant 700-900ms at best, I have no clue where the hell the server was located, although everyone complained about LPB (low ping bastards) back then

Kids these days now have 18ms pings and shit, and you used to have to play quake in the dark before school during the winter uphill.
At least everybody was suffering from the same connection speed, but then every now and then you would get some college dude who had access to a T1 on campus and would just obliterate everybody.
And now the people on the shit connections are favored and getting kills on people who went behind a wall 10 seconds prior. Who knew we'd go backwards with better tech available to more people. I did feel spoiled to have a big Quake community local here though so we had servers running on the local dial-up ISP's, and if you were lucky, you could get almost down to 100ms on a 33.6. Then within a couple of years we were having 100+ person LAN parties at the University and access to the backbone server they had running through there. Its true - with shit ping you basically had to get really good at predicting where the guy would be vs where he appeared to be
