I've known some earthquakes in my day, the largest being in the 6 range. They all lasted something like 2-5 seconds, maybe 15 seconds for the largest. 3 fucking minutes of this is insane.

When I was in AK the only thing I did in Anchorage was look at some of the 1964 earthquake damage. They had a lot of signs and displays of stuff that happened due to the quake all over the world. It was a 9.2 or so.

Some barges were knocked loose of the dock at Dow Chemical on the Mississippi river between Baton Rouge and New Orleans Louisiana. I knew Tsuanamis are bad but never once thought it would have an impact (though very small) from the gulf.

I can't imagine having to deal with Tsunamis. From videos I've seen it looks like it might top out but it just keeps coming and coming and getting deeper.

Our 7.1 lasted close to a minute. It was terrifying.

Magnitudes are crazy though. 8.8 is about 50x larger, and 350x as much energy release than the one we had. I can't even imagine.
