Can we talk for a moment about how fucking dumb it was to put the artillery right behind the sacrificial cavalry? Why didnt they place that shit as far back as they could so it would continually rain down fire from above?

Hell for that matter they know they are fighting a mindless undead horde, so putting in a ton more trenches / walls of obsidian coated spikey bits etc that served as speed bumps would have been better.

I think my biggest problem with this is how incredibly localized this "apocalypse" was.

No one in Essos knows this even happened, no one south of Winterfell in Westeros would believe it was anything more than a silly story made up by drunk northerners to explain why part of the Wall fell down.

Hell Old Towne, the largest city by far in Westeros, is completely untouched by any of these things. Robert's Rebellion didn't change anything in Old Towne, nor did anything since Robert died or the whole White Walker business. From their point of view its just a normal year heading into a Winter period.

It certainly screws up any moral of cooperation to face a greater evil.

I got the impression it's always been this way for the North, though. They are the people who believe in snarks and grumkins.

That's been bothering me too, this episode was called the Long Night. Well, it lasted for one night. The original Long Night lasted for years ("a generation") plunging most of the world into cold and darkness. Hardly compares. Years ago I was under the impression the final season would completely be the Long Night v2.0.

Yea I was thinking something along those lines would have been a lot better. Maybe after the Dothraki got wiped out they had an emergency meeting where they discuss how they cannot hope to win on the battlefield and their only remaining option is a surgical strike to take out the Night King (who is behind his armies like he should be). The Dragons could fly out a bunch of the main characters toward him, but crash somewhere near him. Then the group of heroes then has to fight their way towards the Night King, always rushing forward in a frantic way so they don't get overrun (providing good action scenes and chances for meaningful deaths) until they eventually make it to the Night King for the last battle. Maybe he's protected by that blue flame he does and Melisandre has some self-sacrificing way to get the heroes past of it. Arya would initially be left in the castle but Bran goes "Jon needs you, I see it" and she uses her face magic to sneak right through the middle of the undead army (creates some tense moments to see if her illusion holds, replacing the library scene)
Tense final battle between Jon and Night King (surrounded by Others) where Arya can eventually use her dagger throwing skills to off the NK.

On that same wavelength, having the battle take place in the course of a single night is a major flaw imo. If they showed a passing of days it would feel much more epic. And we could actually get some awesome daytime battles too. I doubt the episode would need to be extended much, too.

They were shooting for a better "Helm's Deep", which was also a single-night affair, and ran 40minutes long. You would think having 2x the running time that this battle would feel much longer/more epic, but It doesn't even compare to Helm's Deep at all. It feels so tiny in comparison.

Yeah I thoroughly expected that the last stand would be at the Aerie after the undead had blitzed everything else including King's Landing. The natural defense choke point nature of the Aerie would make it the only viable place to serve as a base for the anti-undead resistance who could sortie from that point using Dragons or whatever.

They problem with the undead is traditional tactics are completely useless. They have no fear and feel no pain. But while they are fairly "mindless" individually, they also have a necromancer directing their actions. If you figure out a trick, then he figures out the solution and passes it onto the undead.

The Dothraki charging in wasn't very smart, but honestly there was no scenario where mounted cavalry helps you at all. There really isn't a backline to route, there aren't any soldiers to scatter or archers to cutdown. Horses are a liability, because the undead have no issues just launching themselves at it and killing it. Short of everyone chilling out inside the castle, there really was no good strategy. Plus, eventually the NK would have swooped in and nuked some of the walls, letting the undead pour in anyways.
Any strategy against the night king's army relies on a fundamental limitation to his mana reserves, which makes no sense in the context of the show. But if it did, the correct move would be to constantly harass the army of the undead as they marched south, cutting apart their troops and making the night king constantly pop his weather cooldowns to stop his undead army from getting picked apart at the edges by cavalry. In this case the night king would've showed up with a bunch of broken ass skeletons.

Once they were all holed up in the castle at 2AM and the night king's army swarmed, they were pretty much fucked. The cavalry would've been best kept in reserve for when it got light out to charge their rear, but it doesn't matter when the night king can just make a huge blizzard. They could've had the dragons parked on the castle blowing up the zombies but it wouldn't have mattered if they could've just ice-speared them.

LOL. I had to look up if anyone named their child Cersei. Found this:
American parents invented 1,100 new baby names last year

11 babies in 2017 named Cersei. 0 Arya or Sansa on that list.

According to the social security website...

Arya.png

No other name I could think of made it into the top 1000 except ones that are already normal names (Jon, Sam, etc.). Both Jon and Sam seems to be in decline in the last decade, but I doubt we can blame that on GoT. Arya is by far the big winner when it comes to baby names.

I enjoyed the episode, but agree with the general consensus here. There are so many more interesting and clever ways it could have gone and too many scenes were too dark to be enjoyable.

I do think if there is anything that could motivate GRRM to finish the books it was this episode and probably what will follow.

I have zero interest in seeing any of the remaining episodes of this series now. The whole thing was supposed to be about the winter coming to wreck all humanity, and it basically boiled down to 1 battle in 1 episode.

And... that's it.

We're supposed to give a damn about the bitch in Kings Landing, her hatred of Terian, and her feud with the Starks? ... really.... all of this build up, and that's the final conflict... a raging bitch in King's Landing, an annoyingly poorly acted pirate, a woman who wants vengeance for having to marry a duchebag child king... etc... no. Fuck that. Fuck this whole thing. This is the single most stupid ending they could have ever come up with for this series.

Dany already mentioned some shit about a very difficult scene for her character. Which could really be anything, but probably includes Jon or dragons dead.
Maybe she meant Ser Friendzone dying.

you're right, now that they've made it all about Sersea and duchebag Terian, I'm out too. I'm waiting to see how the real story ends in the books

Episode was good. My only issue was it was too dark. I’m not a t.v critic like some here tho.

Lol Terryean. Tyrean. Tyrone, who cares!
Could've sworn there was some award show announcer that butchered the fuck out of it years ago, saying something like "Tyrlon Nannister in Games of Bones!" but I just got a bunch of porn parody results when I searched for that.

what if The Drowning God turns out to be The Lord of Light and also the God of Death and he's a giant cthulu monster chilling out under Kings Landing and comes out next episode. The only thing holding him back was The Night King but he's been controlling everyone including Bran to clear out that final obstacle.

lol yeah right its gonna be Cersei and Dany smirking at each other for the next 180 minutes, Arya tries to kill Cersei but gets pwned by Gregor, Clegane Bowl happens, blah blah blah Jon is on the throne cuz he always does absolutely fuck all but ends up somehow failing upwards, just like the showrunners.
