Newtown shootings: Democrats Malloy and Feinstein seek gun laws

Two senior US Democrats have called for stricter gun control legislation following the elementary school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

Twenty children and six women died in Friday's assault on Sandy Hook school by a lone gunman who then turned his weapon on himself.

Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy urged stronger national legislation.

And Senator Dianne Feinstein said she would introduce a bill to ban assault weapons as soon as Congress convened.

And Gun Store sales go up.

@Itzena Certainly a better story than the reality of UK Crime Stats. How are things in your neck of the woods, mate?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...of-Europe.html
The UK has some problems, particularly with our binge drinking culture. However, as per usual you did not actually read the article that you linked.

Edit to clarify: Violent crime is reported in different want in different countries. You could completely turn that article around (in the context of gun control) and say that it means that in the UK violence is less likely to result in death than it is in the US.

223 is like number 14 in from the top left, and being sufficiently sized to kill much of anything in north america barring the safety of using it vs bear (polar or non) Moose and the like; it still isnt a very big round comparatively. depending on bullet choice in the cartridge it can either fracture or basically explosively fragment apon penetration as with a polycarbonate tip type, or be used close to a NATO type round with a heavilly full metal jacketed bullet as a Geneva Convention pleasing pass thru bullet...designed to penetrate completely and pass thru without delivering its full terminal ballistic force to the victim and leaving a possibly repairable wound channel. I love the rounds utility and its performance is adequite for most American game. The rounds used to be very cheap and ideally suited for varmint hunting where you could shoot hundreds of pests a session cheaply. Many many dear are taken in increasing numbers as the AR-15 type firearms become more and more popular. I love the AR type guns, and i believe anyone legally suited and responsible enough should own one.
I would not let my schizo son have access to it, or a pistol, or a butcher knife, or a goddamn sling shot. If I couldnt lock it up tight enough, then i wouldnt possess it in any situation where someone with disorders might be pawing it. If i needed a gun to protect myself from that person specifically then id have a pistol safely on my hip, purse, or cross chest holster. I would sleep ontop of it so i could have it if the need arises but not my wierdo child.
Wtf? Please dont speak ever again. Sleeping with a pistol under your pillow is about one of the dumbest fucking things you can do. Your post, very very bad.

How about a more recent article rather than linking one from 2009?

Recorded crime in England and Wales falls 4%, with murders down 14% in 2011-12 and violent crime in general down 7% - The Guardian

The murder rate in England and Wales fell by 14% to 550 homicides in 2011-12 - the lowest level since 1983.

Recorded crime also fell by 4%, continuing the long downward trend in crime since 1995, and dropping below 4m offences for the first time in 23 years.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said violent crime had fallen by 7%, including a 2% fall in robberies.
apparently the schools in UK aren't doing so hot either?

UK education sixth in global ranking - BBC News

The UK's education system is ranked sixth best in the developed world, according to a global league table published by education firm Pearson.

The first and second places are taken by Finland and South Korea.

The rankings combine international test results and data such as graduation rates between 2006 and 2010...

..The two education superpowers - Finland and South Korea - are followed by three other high-performing Asian education systems - Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

The UK - which is considered as a single system, rather than four devolved administrations - is then ranked at the head of an above-average group including the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.

These are ahead of a middle-ranking group including the United States, Germany and France.

At the lowest end are Mexico, Brazil and Indonesia.

It seems Michigan is going hard with the crazy train this week.

They have passed a law that only has to be signed in by our cunt Gov. that will allow concealed carry in all of those places that were Gun free zones before such as: schools, churches, bars, etc.

I am a teacher, and I cannot for any reason ever understand why it would be acceptable to allow adults to walk into our school with loaded weapons. Absolutely blows my mind.

I am not a loon on the gun issue either, I don't own guns, but I am not trying to take them away from people, I just believe that there are certain venues that should simply not allow guns. Schools are number one on the list of no gun zone in my book.

I mean, really, even you guys that want unlimited gun this-and-that, is any sane rational adult in favor of allowing guns in schools? Serious question.

Yeah the only people who obey the "no guns allowed" sign are the law abiding citizens. So basically having the gun free zones, are like a big sign saying, "Hey psycho, get your guns and come here, no one will be able to respond with equal force until the cops show up". Now retards will be thinking twice about trying to attack our schools.

This is a great step in the right direction. It's looking more and more like the gun argument is over, the good guys won.

I would have no problem with concealed carry being allowed in places like schools, provided that the process to get a concealed carry permit was sufficiently exclusive. I mean honestly, people with concealed carry permits are law abiding citizens, so why does it make a difference where they are allowed to carry their gun? I'm not saying schools should have armed security personnel, but if a cop can keep his gun when he's on a school, why should a citizen who is legally permitted to carry his weapon around be required to leave it behind when he steps onto school grounds?

The thing about gun free zones is...they aren't. At least not on the college level. I know plenty of people that carry pistols at the school I went to, some with CHL's some without. The sign in the parking lot has never stopped them.

Gun free, drug free zones are pure platitudes with zero force behind them, this is obvious on its face. Political pandering to a problem without actually doing anything to solve it at its finest.
