This is the same wife that wants to watch porn with you, right? How have you not used that as a reason to convince her yet?

One interesting thing about the cheapo Seiko or TCL 4k tv that is coming out for $1k this fall is that some people with the chinese versions have been able to drive it on a pc at 1920x1080 @ 120hz. no clue what the PQ, input lag, color, chroma, etc is but I thought that was kinda cool.

Dropping the 4k discussion for a second. It seams based on this thread the that current Plasma TVs seem to be top of the heap in terms of quality. When did this happen? When last I looked it was the LED TVs taking the world by storm. My current 55 1080 Samsung is a plasma, and was good value for the quality (IMO) however I am terrified about game burn in. One night I passed out playing infamous and woke up to the UI burned in to the set. Took about 3 days for it to work itself out, I have now banished my PS3 to the basement (50 inch 1998 rear projection Panasonic) due to fear of permanently damaging my set. I am now looking to upgrade the man cave TV and am perplex as the hard core gamers are picking plasma ! When I bought my current tv 2010. The salesman said image burn was a thing of the past, based on my exp that seems like a load of bs.

I am currently thinking about a 60/70/ 80 sharp aquos. Has anyone tried these? How would they compare to the 60 plasma Panasonics that seem to be all the rage? Has there been any reports of burn issues with the 2013 plasmas?

I think you're confusing Burn In with Image Retention. Burn In is pretty much a thing of the past. IR is still a concern, but it is not a permanent issue and is usually easily resolved.

Nothing really compares to the new Panasonics for Image Quality and price/performance.

Picture quality on plasmas has always been near [or at] the top in dark rooms, the downsides were burn in and high glare.

Burn In is permanent damage to the screen. IR is just temporary stuff. I do get some IR on my ST60 if I play something with a static HUD for a few hours, but it goes away fairly fast if I take a break from the game and throw something else on for a little bit or grab something to eat and make sure the TV is playing something else in the meantime.

The worst I've had is the Dead Island super-white health bars that stuck around on light images for 4-5 days (honestly it wasbarelynoticeable and I had to really look for it), but that was from playing like 12 hours straight + really white stuff tends to last longer and I had probably less than 200 hours on the set. It's really not a big deal unless you do something silly like that, which you really shouldn't be doing anyways. Just take regular breaks every couple hours and there shouldn't be any big issues. Also, IR tends to go away faster the more the set is aged.

Piece of advice: Download or buy the Disney WoW disc. It has a Pixel Flipper utility on it that helps better than anything else with IR if you do happen to run into issues with it.

I will say though that the TV has definitely taught me to love games without static HUDs, even though IR is a pretty minor issue.

How thick are plasmas these days? I have to say I am in love with the fact that my 60" LED is like 3/4" thick.

They're a lot thinner than they used to be, my ST60 is thinner than the 2008 (I think) LCD I replaced. They're notsuper-thin, the ST60 says 2" (1.7" general depth) on the product sheet, though it does have a border on it that is really thin. It does not look bulky at all.

I have a Sharp Aquos 80" for media room, and Panasonic ST60 for the living room. The Plasma does have minor glare issues if lighting is directly behind it, but still very clear with a lot of ambient light in the room. The black's are amazing.

The Sharp 80" is really an awesome TV. I got the 2012 model which is back-lit and has a more uniform picture than the 2013 edge-lit models. BD movies or gaming looks phenomenal, and even OTA HD stuff is really impressive. Game of Thrones scenery (riverlands, king's landing, essos) is just fucking awesome. Typically had 8-10 family/friends come over and watch episodes last season, and plan on doing the same next year. Recommend both TV's highly.

Btw, there was a Firmware Update for the ST60 today. Fixes a couple of the bugs. Unknown if it the Input Lag is affected at all (could probably easily fix it by allowing you to disable the smart TV stuff, though I still have yet to notice it myself and do not consider it an issue).

I saw the aquos 80" at costco yesterday, blew me the fuck away. Can't even believe fucking costco sells it. Did you wall mount it or put it on a stand, my living room 60" is wall mounted now and I'd prefer to keep it that way if I went 80 or 90".

I hoping that the 80" monsters get down into the 1500-2000 range in about a year or two from now when I'll be ready for a new set. That shit looks amazing and my wife had to pull me away from one when we were in Costco a few weeks ago.

I am looking to buy a new TV for the PS4 launch. I like sitting pretty damn close to my TV when I game so I am looking for something smaller, around 30 inches or so. Whats the best kind of TV for the smaller ones?

I know exactly 0 about TV's so feel free to educate me.

At that size, get a computer monitor that has built in speakers. You will be hard pressed to find a 1080p tv that small. Most are 720p at 32 inches and smaller.

I know NOTHING about monitors and TV's, can I get a monitor that size that I can watch cable and play a console on?

LG's smaller LCD TV line is well known for being some of the best for gaming. Low input lag, and when calibrated the colors are excellent (for an LCD). I have an older model LG 32" (32LH30) I use for console gaming. Not sure if the new ones are up to the quality of mine - IPS, low lag, great colors, 1080p - but LG has always been underrated in the TV department.

I have a 26 inch Vizio LED that I really like. I got it a couple years ago from Target as a pre Black Friday deal (like $50 less than in the Amazon link below)... It's served me well so far but I don't game on it that much so maybe it's a terrible recommendation

edit: its 720p. Why do you need 1080? New console stuff that I'm unaware of probably?
